Yet another notch in the belt of the regional progressive blogosphere. Darryl at Hominid Views, whose original post led to national ridicule being heaped on Adele Fergusen’s ridiculous, pro-slavery column, reports that the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal has decided to discontinue her column. Way to go Darryl.

Just what the US needs, WingNuts running our prisons:

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Tom Green County commissioners gave extra preparation time Saturday to a group proposing a faith-based prison in San Angelo.
The new management team of Dallas-based Corrections Concepts asked for at least two months to prepare more detailed financial information on the project. The commissioners did not set a timetable.
Corrections Concepts was the only group to step forward when the county requested proposals for the 623-inmate prison. A management contract has not been voted on. The company’s new chief executive Forrest Watson said the group needs time to reorganize.

but then again, there are probably more guilty and corrupt people in DC than there are in any single prison.

    REVOKE THEIR VOTING PRIVILEGES!

By law, a corporation is a “person.” This means it pays income taxes,* (*only in theory, see http://moneycentral.msn.com/co.....P80242.asp), can sue and be sued** (** until Republican “tort reform” passes), etc.

But when a corporation breaks the law, you can’t throw the “corporation” in jail — all you can do is fine it — while the human beings who actually broke the law avoid liability by hiding behind the legal shield of corporate identity.

Under Bush and the GOP Congress, corporations can break the law to their heart’s content, because NOBODY WILL DO ANYTHING.

    From the Associated Press:

    “Corporations Stiffing Government on Fines
“By MARTHA MENDOZA and CHRISTOPHER SULLIVAN

“(March 19) – When a gasoline spill and fiery explosion killed three young people in Washington state, officials announced a record penalty against a gas pipeline company: $3 million to send the message that such tragedies ‘must never happen again.’

“When nuclear labs around the country were found exposing workers to radiation and breaking other safety rules, assessments totaling $2.5 million were quickly ordered.

“When coal firms’ violations were blamed for deaths, injuries and risks to miners from Alabama to West Virginia, they were slapped with more than $1.3 million in penalties.

“What happened next with these no-nonsense enforcement efforts? Not much. The pipeline tab was eventually reduced by 92 percent, the labs’ assessments were waived as soon as they were issued, and the mine penalties largely went unpaid.

“The amount of unpaid federal fines has risen sharply … corporations regularly avoid large, highly publicized penalties for wrongdoing ….

“In a study, Government Accountability Office investigators found that just 7 percent of restitution in (white collar crime) cases is paid.

“‘Fines and orders to pay restitution are an important part of how we punish convicted criminals. When so little effort is made to collect that money, we allow convicted criminals to avoid punishment for their crimes, weaken our criminal justice system and ultimately deny justice to the victims of crimes,’ said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who has pressed for closer scrutiny for years.

    …

“In many high-profile cases, fines are touted by authorities as proof that they are cracking down. Yet frequently those orders are quietly negotiated to just a fraction of their original amounts – as if drivers, faced with fines for speeding, offered the traffic court judge pennies on the dollar….”

“Documents provided to the AP by the Labor Department’s Employment Benefits Security Administration, whose job is to protect pension and welfare benefits, showed that $2,000 was the maximum amount paid on nearly a dozen penalties ranging from $86,500 to $180,000 …

“The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s written policy explains to inspectors that they can reduce penalties by as much as 95 percent ….

“Internal documents from U.S. Customs show that … a $60,911,316 ‘commercial fraud’ assessment for one company … ended with a $15,000 collection by Customs.

    …

“The Energy Department … issued some $2.5 million in fines against Los Alamos, Livermore and Argonne national laboratories since 2000 … waived in the same sentence …. Even so, the Energy Department includes the fines in its annual reports to Congress and often announces them in press releases.

    …

“Financial penalties are regularly touted by agencies and prosecutors as a strict consequence of lawbreaking. …

“Nearly seven years ago, a pipeline ruptured, spilling 230,000 gallons of gasoline into a creek near Bellingham, Wash. The fuel exploded into a fireball … killed two 10-year-old boys playing in the woods and a young man, 18, who had gone to the stream to fish …. On June 2, 2000, the Transportation Department issued a forceful press release, announcing a $3.05 million administrative penalty against the pipeline owner, Olympic Pipe Line Co. … last year, the penalty was quietly reduced to $250,000.

    …

“The recent West Virginia coal mine deaths focused new criticism on enforcement tradeoffs made by mine safety inspectors. During hearings in January, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voiced outrage at how coal operators can whittle down fines. He cited assessments by the Mine Safety and Health Administration against a company in an Alabama mine where 13 people were killed in 2001.
‘Incredibly, … an Administrative Law Judge reduced these fines from $435,000 to a mere $3,000 ….’

“On Feb. 20, 2002, near Rupert, W.Va., a section of mine roof up to 10 feet thick collapsed, killing one miner and seriously injuring another. It took more than four hours to dig them out. The MSHA investigators’ report concluded: ‘Root cause – Mine management condoned unsafe work practices and … demonstrated a reckless disregard of the dangers ….’ … The companies … were hit with $165,000 in administrative penalties …. But MSHA has no record of any payment four years later. …”

Of course, I know what MTR really meant — he claims the U.S. has the world’s best health care system. What a laugh! He’s confusing “most expensive” with “best.” By any measure, U.S. health care is mediocre — that is, if you can afford it. 43 million Americans have NO health care. Those that do, get health care roughly equal in quality with many Third World nations.

One of the unique features of our capitalist-model, for-profit, employer-based, private-insurance system of paying for health care is that YOU DON’T GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR.

For example, on Friday I found out that even though I hand over a third of my pension check to an ex-employer every month to pay for my COBRA health benefits, my health coverage was cancelled on January 1 because the ex-employer took my money and didn’t buy the health insurance with it! So now, if I get sick (like I did last year), I’m fucked.

I like Castro’s system better. He confiscates the employer’s property, shoots the employer, and the workers get quality health care for free. We need something like that in America.

  20. Roger Rabbit spews:

In case any of you trollfucks don’t know what a CHEAP LABOR CONSERVATIVE is,

“When you cut right through it, right-wing ideology is just ‘dime-store economics’ – intended to dress their ideology up and make it look respectable. You don’t really need to know much about economics to understand it. They certainly don’t. It all gets down to two simple words.

“‘Cheap labor’. That’s their whole philosophy in a nutshell … a short and pithy ‘catch phrase’ that describes them perfectly. You’ve heard of ‘big-government liberals’. Well they’re ‘cheap-labor conservatives’.

“Cheap-labor conservative’ is a moniker they will never shake, and never live down. Because it’s exactly what they are. You see, cheap-labor conservatives are defenders of corporate America – whose fortunes depend on labor. The larger the labor supply, the cheaper it is. The more desperately you need a job, the cheaper you’ll work, and the more power those ‘corporate lords’ have over you. If you are a wealthy elite – or a ‘wannabe’ like most dittoheads – your wealth, power and privilege is enhanced by a labor pool, forced to work cheap.”

“It turns out that an Associated Press cameraman got footage of a war crime and sent it to the AP Bureau. So what did the AP, which is a cooperative owned by thousands of U.S. newspapers and broadcast stations, do with the footage? They erased it. It’s not just a matter of censorship. This is a matter of members of the Associated Press conspiring to cover up a war crime. They erased solid evidence of a murder. It’s time we sent some of these corporate media cocksuckers to jail and this is our chance to do it. First, however, we need to raise a big stink about this.”

Well, a recent informal poll shows that 8 out of 9 military veterans of the Iraq conflict who run for Congress vote DEMOCRAT. Looks like the Pukes LIED AGAIN.

Unfortunately for Dino Rossi, the military ballots WERE counted.

Maybe that explains why Republican legislators blocked a bill last year to hold the primary election earlier, so election officials will have more time to get ballots to soldiers, and soldiers will have more time to return them.

Not to worry, the Democrats — who control both houses of the state legislature — got it done this session despite GOP opposition. From now on, the primary will be in August.

If you want to help the troops vote, elect Democrats to the legislature.

KABUL, Afghanistan — An Afghan man is being prosecuted in a Kabul court and could be sentenced to death on a charge of converting from Islam to Christianity, a crime under this country’s Islamic laws, a judge said Sunday.

    Et cetera”

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.c.....ert20.html

The defendant, Abdul Rahman, left Afghanistan at least 16 years ago (to flee the Communists) and converted to Christianity while living in Pakistan. He stayed in Pakistan for four years, then immigrated to Germany and lived there nine years. He returned to Afghanistan in 2002, after the Taliban were overthrown. Rahman was arrested last month, when family members turned him in for being Christian due to bitterness resulting from a custody dispute over his two daughters.

WHAT IN THE HELL HAVE WE SPENT OVER A TRILLION DOLLARS AND THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF OUR SOLDIERS? We invaded and supposedly conquered Afghanistan because their regime was waging an Islamic “holy war” against the United States, which claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people in our country on September 11, 2001.

Is this how a skunk like you tries to justify the murder of unarmed civilians, including women and children?

Like I said, shit happens in war. Under fire, you have an extremely limited view of your surroundings because you’re using whatever cover is available. You don’t stick your head out to look around. You can’t see the enemy, and don’t know exactly where he is. Because you have to make life-or-death judgments in a split second, even well-trained, disciplined troops can mistake an unarmed civilian for a threat under certain circumstances.

But you can’t attribute what these Marines did to “the fog of war.” They went into the village, kicked down doors, entered homes, and shot obviously unarmed old people, women, and children at point-blank range. Witnesses later told reporters they made no effort to search for weapons, take prisoners, or secure the area. The Marines claimed they took fire from the village, but reporters who later visited the scene noted an absence of bullet holes in outside walls, which indicates the Marines were lying. The evidence is very strong that these were revenge killings — in a word, murder.

There is no excuse for that. Not only is it a criminal act under the UCMJ and international conventions, not only is it immoral, it also represents a breakdown of military discipline and order. It is, therefore, an offense against the military organization in which they were serving, and against the uniform they wore, and against the flag under which they were serving. The flag of our country.

And you sit there and type smart-aleck excuses for murder. This demonstrates what a sorry puke you are. Unfortunately, most wingnuts have no more brains or morals than you, and utter exactly the same disgusting, vile sentiments.

By the way, you dumb illiterate fuck, the correct spelling of the word “presence” is not “presents.” Were you a star pupil in “Hooked on Phonics?” Did you learn to read from a cassette tape because you flunked out of third grade? Idiot.

Here’s a present (not “presents” or “presence”) for you: Why don’t you read this excerpt from Time Magazine in which a 9-year-old girl describes how her entire family was murdered by AMERICANS in front of her eyes:

“When the Marines entered the house, they were shouting in English. ‘First, they went into my father’s room, where he was reading the Koran,’ she claims, ‘and we heard shots.’ According to Eman, the Marines then entered the living room. ‘I couldn’t see their faces very well–only their guns sticking into the doorway. I watched them shoot my grandfather, first in the chest and then in the head. Then they killed my granny.’ She claims the troops started firing toward the corner of the room where she and her younger brother Abdul Rahman, 8, were hiding; the other adults shielded the children from the bullets but died in the process. Eman says her leg was hit by a piece of metal and Abdul Rahman was shot near his shoulder. ‘We were lying there, bleeding, and it hurt so much. Afterward, some Iraqi soldiers came. They carried us in their arms. I was crying, shouting ‘Why did you do this to our family?’ And one Iraqi soldier tells me, ‘We didn’t do it. The Americans did.’ …

“Dr. Wahid, director of the local hospital in Haditha, … says the Marines brought 24 bodies to his hospital …. Wahid says the Marines claimed the victims had been killed by shrapnel from the roadside bomb. ‘But it was obvious to us that there were no organs slashed by shrapnel,’ Wahid says. ‘The bullet wounds were very apparent. Most of the victims were shot in the chest and the head–from close range.'”

Now let’s see — if the Marines fired in legitimate self-defense, why did they LIE about what happened? LYING is what people do when they know they’ve DONE SOMETHING WRONG that they may GO TO JAIL for.

Yes, Klake, the military has opened a criminal investigation, and there may be prosecutions.

Come on, Richard, you’re an educated man and know the answer. We did NOT invade Afghanistan to establish Christianity there, or to make that country safe for Christian converts. The mission was to destroy the terrorist training camps, replace the Taliban government because it was in league with Al Qaeda, capture or kill Al Qaeda leaders and operatives, and disrupt AQ’s operations — which is possible to accomplish by military means. But military power can’t change social and religious rules and practices that have been in place for hundreds or thousands of years.

These people stone their own wives and daughters for adultery, which seems barbaric to us, but to them performs the essential social function of maintaining the power and control structures of the family, clan, and tribe. Likewise, they persecute Christian converts because Christianity and its efforts to convert indigenuous peoples away from their native religion is a threat to their entire social structure. Islam is more than a religion; it also governs social, banking, and business behavior. The introduction of alien religious beliefs and practices is extremely disruptive to their societies.

This guy knew his own culture, and what could happen to him if he returned home, yet he chose to go anyway. He chose to run the risk. However, the chances of him actually being executed are slim — it’s common for Islamic courts to impose symbolic death sentences which are later set aside by religious or secular authorities.

This is their society, and we can’t interfere in it. We have to let them run their culture according to their long-established customs. Nor are cases like this a problem we have to deal with. We’re there to put Al Qaeda out of business, not remake their culture or force a different religion on them.

Another WingNut is feeling the heat:

“Julie Doolittle (wife of CA Congressman John Doolittle) has a consulting firm called Sierra Dominion Financial Solutions. Two of her clients are her husband’s leadership PAC and campaign, for which she does fundraising. She gets a 15% commission on contributions. Doolittle’s hilarious justification for paying her on commission is that she has to work for her money, “because if you don’t raise any money you don’t get paid.” So we’re supposed to think of this little arrangement as a high-minded application of free market principles. Keep in mind that Doolittle is in a securely Republican district and that he sits on the Appropriations Committee. This is not a man who’s been in danger of losing his seat; fundraising is not much of a task. According to the SDUT- and I find this hard to believe – he outraised his last opponent by $935,907 to $2,300.

So this was in effect free money. Doolittle was in a very strong position to raise funds. By his own admission, his wife even got a cut of contributions resulting from his fundraising calls – all she had to do was bring him the list.

And let’s not forget here that Abramoff, his associates and clients gave Doolittle some $140,000 in contributions since 1999. How much did Julie Doolittle get of that?

    But it gets fishier.

Doolittle has said that he is not his wife’s major client. But the SDUT reports that she’s gotten $180,000 in commissions since late 2001 – so she brings in around $60,000 a year from just his business, even though he’s supposedly a minor client. Neither Doolittle nor his wife will say who those other clients are, and as Josh points out, of the only other three that we know about, two are Jack Abramoff’s restaurant and charity, and the other is connected to Ed Buckham, another player in the Abramoff scandal.”

Really, Richard, I hope that’s just naïveté speaking. US military intervention in Iraq never had anything to do with creating an egalitarian, democratic society. The elimination of the Taliban, by the way, was only one of the official rationales for the intervention. So was the task of finding bin Laden.

    International financiers
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

International financiers or international bankers could have a number of meanings depending on context.

In the world of finance, international bankers or international financiers are individuals or financial institutions that have substantial international presences. This includes most investment banks and many of the largest banks in most nations. International banks are challenged by the need to comply with a wide range of national banking legislation. There are a number of associations for international bankers, such as the The Institute of International Bankers.

International financiers and international bankers may also be used to refer to international finance institutions such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

I don’t think we can “un-involve” ourseves from the Middle Eastern mess: there is just too much support for Israel in America (both right and left), and it seems most of the other countries in the region would like to blow Israel off the map. As far as using up the oil to make the Islamic countries irrelevant, that’s pretty much a fantasy. We’d do better to come up with a complete subsitute for oil, and we’re along way from that!

    Dr. E,

You didn’t say anything about Yossarian’s first part of his post. He brought up an important aspect about Islam in that the religion tends to be very intolerant. Your thought?

  139. Dr. E spews:

    Monday, 3/20/06 at 9:53 am

    138

    Sure, since you asked:

Y seems to view Islam as a monolithic religion. I would agree that some strains of Islam (particularly any fundamentalist strain) are indeed intolerant. This, however, is not unique to Islam; the same can be found in fundamentalist Christianity, Judaism, etc. So, to blame Islam (seemingly in its entirety) alone for religious intolerance is inaccurate.

Just a quick addendum here —

I see the Bush administration’s ignorance of Islam to be only a part of the problem with the Iraqi quagmire. They also have displayed either a near complete ignorance and/or disregard for both the ethnic makeup of both Iraq and the region, as well as its immediate and more remote history. Their agenda, which is more driven by controlling the resources of the region than anything else, seems to have a fairly short timeline — 50 years, perhaps — while simultaneously disregarding history of the millennia of continous civilization in the area. They ignore these details at their own peril, and have bean reaping the harvest of such ignorance for several years now.

To that I might add that any idea that this administration might have of engaging Iran militarily is similarly both dangerous and misguided, but is still, as far as I can tell, informed by the same reckless vision. They can attempt to disguise their agenda under the aegis of a global “war on terror” as much as they’d like, but that erases neither the history of the region nor the extremely complex realities on the ground — realities which, in the case of Iran, are at least as complex (if not more so) than those in Iraq.

The same standard should then apply to the government of the USA, which is run by a bunch of psychotic, mass-murdering war criminals. Take the nukes out of the hands of Rummy and Dickie and I’ll support keeping them out of the hands of Ahmadinejad.

Why do you think they want nukes, though? We let Kim Jong-Il have his nukes, and he’s a hell of a lot crazier than the theocrats in Teheran. The real issue for Bushco is not the simple question as to whether the Iranians should be allowed to have nuclear weapons. No, the real issue is that Bushco feels that it must have the sole determinative power as to which nations be allowed to deter US imperialism.

“Nobody gives a fuck about their internal subcultures because they are not relevent to the situation at hand.”

One word: bullshit. Your comment displays a complete ignorance of the complexity of the ethnic and cultural makeup of both Iran and the wider region. We already have first-hand evidence of what happens when an ignorant foreign power destabilizes the artificial order in a fictitious nation (i.e. Iraq, historically speaking) — you get chaos and internecine violence. That’s not to say that the ethnic makeup of Iran or its historical geographic boundaries are the same as those of Iraq, but with one nation in the region already critically destabilized, the destabilization of yet another puts the entire region in a perilous situation. I’m talking about neighboring nations as well, c’mon, name them with me, I’m sure you know them: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Turkmenistan, etc.

Nukes are a ruse, Mark, just like WMDs were in Iraq. The idea of nukes triggers the brain-stem fear reflex of the uninformed masses — of which you almost certainly are a member, given your comments — and encourages those masses to consent to their government’s nefarious activities. It also keeps that willfully ignorant population blind to the thoroughly fascist agenda of the sociopaths in Washington, DC.

“In your opinion, how much money does someone “need”.” Commentby Mark The Redneck— 3/20/06@ 7:50 am

They don’t need any of mine.

The fallacy of MTR’s argument is he assumes having money is the same as “earning” it. He doesn’t concern himself with how people get money. The answer to his question, of course, is that “how” is more important than “how much.”

For example, Seattle City Light ratepayers have seen their electric bills triple since 2000. Why? Because the Enron scumbags illegally manipulated the market, and stole our money. We’re still paying for their thievery — and we will continue to do so for years, if not decades, to come. How was this possible? Because Bush deregulated the electric industry, and Cheney put Ken Lay on his secret energy task force, and the Republicans and their industry lobbyist friends stabbed consumers in the back in their secret, smoke-filled rooms. And MTR is guilty of stealing my money because he voted for these assholes, and continues to support them. You owe me, MTR, you fucking thief.

As another example, senior citizens across the land are paying higher prices for prescription drugs because Bush made price competition illegal in the pharmaceutical industry. To top off his thievery, he gave $750 billion of our hard-earned tax money to his drug and insurance industry pals, with little or no benefit to ordinary citizens. That’s not “earning,” it’s STEALING.

I could give more examples, but this is sufficient to make my point — STEALING IS NOT EARNING, and STOLEN MONEY IS NOT EARNED MONEY. MTR’s problem is he’s so ethically deficient he can’t tell the difference between “earning” and STEALING. As for “working,” MTR doesn’t know what “work” — if someone handed him a shovel, he wouldn’t know what to do with it. That’s how he got those rake marks on his face!

You know the type of imperialism where men pray by themselves and women do too.
You know the type of imperialism where if a woman walks down the street alone she could be killed.
You know the type of imperialism where if a woman visits a doctor by herself she can be killed.
You know the type of imperialism where if a woman has premarital sex, she can be mercy killed because she embarassed her family.
You know the type of imperialism where if a woman wears nail polish on her fingers she can be killed.
You know the type of imperialism where men must grow beards and pray five times a day to someone other than Jesus.

Yes, Islam, what a religion; loved by libruls!

Me, I follow Joshua 24:15. For the Clueless and other libruls, blow off the dust on the Bible and read Joshua!

KLake: Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi was the mouth of the Taliban and Bin Laden before 9/11. He was admitted into Yale University to matriculate as a student. Typical librul institution where a pinhead such as Sayed can get an education after being the mouth of the Taliban. I bet he didn’t graduate middle school. I bet the ASSHeads are proud!

I bet Dr. E and Perfessor DJ would be proud to have Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi in their classes!

Who flew the bin Laden family out of the U.S. after 9/11? Their business partners: the Bush family.

Once again Horseless Looslips FORGETS history. Your hero, Richard Clarke (remember him who wrote the book) gave the order to fly them out. I have told you this at least 5 times on ASSHeads. The problem with libruls is when confronted with the truth, they choose no to accept it, because if they did it, would rock their world!

Richard Clarke, who served as President Bush’s chief of counterterrorism, has claimed sole responsibility for approving flights of Saudi Arabian citizens, including members of Osama bin Laden’s family, from the United States immediately after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In an interview with The Hill yesterday, Clarke said, “I take responsibility for it. I don’t think it was a mistake, and I’d do it again.”

“MTR, if you took the time to read all posts you would have been enlightened to read that Washington currently ranks in the bottom 40% of the US in education monies per student.”

More money doesn’t necessarily solve the problem. I’d support more public money for education if reform was part of the package. Throwing more money at the current system isn’t going to significantly improve the education of children in our state, we need reform, ie. vouchers, merit pay, and year round school.
