Drinking Liberally

by Goldy — Tuesday, 12/6/05, 12:46 pm

The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Tonight is “Smoke ’em if you got ’em” Night, in honor of Initiative 901, which goes into effect on Thursday. (The Ale House is smoke free until 9PM.)

I don’t believe I’ll be smoking, but I’ll definitely be there enjoying some fine ale.

I’m sure legislature will make some changes to the smoking law to iron out obvious problems. IIRC even the initiative sponsors conceded that it might be a little overly strict, but that they were forced to this because efforts to get it through legislature were deadlocked.

He complains that the troops knock down doors at night in Iraq but he hasn’t figured out that it’s a sure-fire way to catch terrorists unawares. Kerry was wounded three times and received three Purple Hearts in Viet Nam. Asked about the severity of the wounds, Kerry said that one of them cost him about two days of service, and that the other two did not interrupt his duty. Bill Clinton as Junk Food Czar?

With 525,000 illegal immigrants in New York City, the Big Apple is awash in fake IDs, with much of the phony document trade centered in a single neighborhood in Queens.

“Roosevelt Avenue is like the mecca for fake documents,” state Assemblyman Jose Peralta tells the New York Sun. “If anybody comes through New York City and they ask, ‘Where can I get a false document?’ the no. 1 answer is going to be Roosevelt Avenue. It’s the place, it’s the spot.”

The Department of Homeland Security said it is aware of the problem, but explains that document fraud knows no geographic bounds.

“Roosevelt Avenue is one of the primary areas in New York City to buy false documents, but it is not limited to any borough, or any immigrant community, and it is not new,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Mark Thorn told the paper.

Exacerbating the situation, illegal immigration into the US now tops legal immigration, according to a recent study by the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington. [Another 500,000 New York Democrat votes!! Maybekerry could bus a few thusand illegals to help the Democrats in Ohio. Democrats: determined to turn the USA into a third world shit hole!]

JOHN Kerry campaign insiders are blaming some of the high-profile people surrounding the candidate for helping President Bush win re-election.
A prime target of the finger-pointers is Kerry’s filmmaker daughter Alexandra, who made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival last spring when she appeared on the red carpet in a see-through dress. She then hired a pricey publicist at powerhouse agency PMK — on her dad’s dime, sources say — and went on the campaign trail.

But insiders snipe that all she did was rack up major expenses. “She had an entourage of five people with her everywhere she went,” one Kerry confidant sniffed to PAGE SIX’s Jared Paul Stern. “A hairdresser, makeup artist, publicist and two assistants. It ended up costing something like $8,000 a month. And she didn’t exactly do anything.” [Democrats love to spend other people’s money, that is, money they did not earn themselves. I had a very interesting conversation about holiday trees and christmas trees with a great poster here. I even learned something or two more about the origins of my Tannenbaum! I don’t like the term holiday tree, it’s a christmas tree. That’s our history and tradition and I don’t like seeing it changed just to be pc. A christmas tree to me has never had anything to do with Christ. If I learned anything in the Army, it was to respect all religions, customs, and traditions. In Germany, (Home of the first Christmas tree) they hang a pickle on their tree, and on christmas day, the child who finds the pickle gets an extra present! Of course, the pickles now are glass ornaments. Last year, when we were decorating my 10 foot christmas tree, I missed Germany so bad, I went in the kitchen and cooked up a batch of Gluh wine, it’s a hot and spicy red wine! We really don’t win anything as a people or as individuals if we suppress all cultures and religions. Intelligent Design isn’t a myth, it isn’t a science, it is a religious explanation for the creation of human beings and the planet we live on. Nobody knew anything about creation when the bible was written. Somebody needed to explain something to people’s questions. Darwin has some holes in his theories too. There are some pretty different cultures in our world today and different doesn’t mean bad.

The pickle could very well be a myth. They do sell pickle ornaments all over Germany though. Every christmas market, (Kriskindlmarkt) that I have ever been to has them, along with radishes, and every other fruit and vegetable that you can think of. They also have real candles with candle holders for trees, and the very best is their clip on birds, which I have hundreds of……. Gluehwein is wonderful, especially at night with the lights and the vendor stands and the snow. Leavenworth sells the same brand of gluehwein that I used to buy in Germany at the garden store by my house. You have not had Christmas until you have spent one in a German town!

U.S. ABDUCTED AND TORTURED INNOCENT GERMAN; HE FILES SUIT AGAINST CIA IN U.S. DISTRICT COURT

Hey trolls, listen up, THIS is why our government shouldn’t torture people — because, you stupid fucks, they might be INNOCENT!

“German Man Claims U.S. Tortured Him
“Germany’s Leader Says Rice Acknowledges Mistake
    “By PETE YOST, AP

“WASHINGTON (Dec. 6) – A German man alleged in a lawsuit Tuesday that the CIA took him to Afghanistan and tortured him after the spy agency mistakenly identified him as an associate of the Sept. 11 terrorists.

“In the latest controversy surrounding the CIA’s ‘rendition’ program for terror suspects, Khaled al-Masri said Macedonian authorities … turned him over to the CIA … he then was flown to Afghanistan where he spent more than four months in a cell.

” … Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice … declined to discuss the case with reporters Tuesday, but the new German chancellor, Angela Merkel, said the United States had admitted making a mistake regarding al-Masri.

” … on arrival in Afghanistan, al-Masri was ‘dragged off the plane and thrown into the trunk of a car’ and beaten by his captors, he told reporters in a video hookup from Germany.

“Then-CIA Director George Tenet was notified by the agency that al-Masri’s captivity was a case of mistaken identity, yet the man was held for another two months after his passport was found to be valid, his lawsuit alleges. The case was filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., where Judge T.S. Ellis III, an appointee of President Reagan, will preside.

    …

“The suit says al-Masri was held at a CIA-run facility known as the ‘Salt Pit,’ an abandoned brick factory north of the Kabul business district used for detention of high-level terror suspects.

“During his captivity in Afghanistan, al-Masri said, he complained that the water was unfit to drink. … Al-Masri said that when he became ill, ‘they didn’t pay any attention.’ … ‘You might be buried here, al-Masri said one of his interrogators told him. His captors kept asking him if he was acquainted with Sept. 11 conspirators Mohammed Atta and Ramzi Binalshibh.

“Defendants in the case are Tenet, 10 ‘John Doe’ CIA employees whose identities aren’t known to the plaintiffs and three private aviation companies that worked with the CIA in transporting al-Masri to and from Afghanistan. Al-Masri contends his due process rights were violated and that he was subjected to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

“‘I am asking the American government to admit its mistakes and to apologize for my treatment,’ al-Masri said in a written statement. ‘Throughout my time in the prison, I asked to be brought before a court but was refused. Now I am hoping that an American court will say very clearly that what happened to me was illegal and cannot be done to others.’

“The scope of the CIA’s rendition program has not been publicly disclosed. However, Amnesty International contended Monday that six planes used by the CIA for renditions had made some 800 flights in or out of European airspace, including 50 landings at Shannon International Airport in Ireland.

Positions on the Nooksack city council are non-partisan, so I can’t determine whether Mr. Knutsen is a Republican or a Democrat. However, I have lived in Whatcom County, and I know the small exurban towns there tend to be Republican and conservative. In any case, Mr. Knutsen was legally elected to the council but apparently lost his eligibility to serve when was forced to move from his home on W. 1st Street in Nooksack to an apartment in Bellingham due to divorce. I don’t know whether Nooksack (pop. 864 as of 2004) even has a single rental unit.

Mac — for all you or I know, Mr. Knutsen may be (I would guess he probably is) a long-time resident of Nooksack. He may have lived there all his life. He may even be a pioneer descendant, as outsiders tend not to move to places like Nooksack; there’s not much there to attract new residents, certainly not jobs. He may have every intention of moving back to Nooksack as soon as he can find housing.

Mr. Knutsen obviously cares enough about what happens there to donate his time to civic activities like serving on the city council. Let’s face it, in a town with about 200 voters, the talent pool isn’t real deep and they’re lucky to find people like him willing to serve for no pay. Mr. Knutsen is not a lawyer, and probably didn’t realize that moving outside the town limits ended his qualification to serve on the council. He probably thought he was doing nothing wrong.

    Nevertheless, the law’s the law.

What’s more remarkable than Mr. Lynn Knutsen’s departure from the Nooksack city council is the fact that Stefan has nothing better to do than delve into local matters like this while Rome burns all around him.

WSSC SHITCANS RINGHOFER’S ATTEMPT TO RECALL SAM REED; LABELS RECALL PETITION “FRIVOLOUS”

The Washington Supreme Court, in an opinion that uses the word “frivolous,” rejected gadfly Martin Ringhofer’s attempt to recall Secretary of State Sam Reed because of the 2004 governor’s election.

The court dismissed 6 of Ringhofer’s 9 charges against Reed on the grounds Reed isn’t responsible for “the past conduct of a wholly separate governmental agency” that is “beyond his knowledge or ability to direct.”

The court dumped charge 7 (Reed failed to require counties to submit written reconciliation narratives before certifying the election) because such narratives were not required by law.

The court dumped charge 8 (alleging Reed failed to perform duties of his office) because Ringhofer and his co-wacko, Linda Jordan, “fail[ed] to provide any legal analysis supporting any failure of Secretary Reed to act in accordance with the
statute” and “offered no reason why the allegations contained in the charge show violations of a legal duty.”

The court dumped charge 9 (relating to Reed’s certification of Gregoire’s hand-recount victory over erstwhile candidate and full-time whiner Dino Rossi) because county canvassing boards are responsible for certifying election results and the Secretary of State’s role in transmitting the returns to the legislature are merely “ministerial” in nature. In other words, the Secretary of State lacks discretion to certify or not certify an election. “Thus, the secretary of state has a constitutional duty to deliver the counties’ respective returns to the speaker of the house. In light of the constitution’s mandatory provisions, appellants’ charge nine would require Secretary Reed to disregard a constitutional duty.”

Hey Martin — do you know how to pronounce

    F R I V O L O U S

? Sheesh. What a waste of the court’s time and taxpayer dollars. The attorney general should ask the court for Rule 11 sanctions against Ringhofer and Jordan for the state’s defense costs on this one.

I’m not a regular reader of Stefan’s shitty little blog — is anyone? — but I don’t recall him saying anything when Mastercard let 40 million credit card files get stolen. I guess it’s okay for private enterprise to compromise the personal information of 40 million people, but if a government agency compromises 550 people it’s worthy of a rant on Sucky Politics. That’s because, in Stefan’s neocon mind, private enterprise can do no wrong and government can do no good.

    Private enterprise = good
    Government = bad

I really can’t tell you why Stefan hates government. Maybe he’s bitter because he couldn’t hack government employment. I really don’t understand why not. Over 3,800 other King County residents have successful careers as pollworkers. As far as I know, Stefan was the only one of thousands of pollworkers who couldn’t follow the instructions given to him in training and by his supervisor, and walked off the job. Stefan just doesn’t have what it takes to be a government worker, and is envious and resentful of those who do. Yeah, that’s gotta be it.

My definition of torture is probably different than most people on this board. I personally would not beat or hurt a prisoner, nor would I watch anyone beat or hurt a prisoner without going off on the people who were doing the beating and that includes stopping them from abusing prisoners. I didn’t see any obvious tortue in the pictues of Abu-Ghraib. I saw degrading, insulting, sick, perverted and totally immoral and unethical behavior by the soldiers there. There were numerous violations of the UCMJ, which is why they are being courts-martialed. The Brigadier General in charge of those soldiers was demoted to Colonel and is no longer in the military. Who I didn’t hear of getting in trouble over it was their First Sergeant and Sergeants Major and those guys are the ones who should have been checking those soldiers on a daily basis.

I trust our Federal government as far as I have my eyes open and on trained right on them. They interred American citizens of Japanese descent in WWII. Did they apologize? Did they compensate? How many years did it take them? They used soldiers as guinea pigs in Vietnam by giving them LSD, they also gave LSD to other government workers, all without telling the people that they the drugs to. They put soldiers at the Nevada Test Site and set off above ground nuclear bombs near them to test the effects of radiation on them, and there are thousands of other examples. Yes, they should apologize and compensate! Do I think they will – nahhh!

Sgmmac: You forget the Tuskegee Experiment. We blacks will never forget. For forty years the US Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. Beginning in 1932, the federal government sponsored a study to examine the impact of syphilis involving black men. (Why did they only look at black men?). The experiment went on until 1972 without the test subjects’ knowledge, but no President had apologized to the volunteers and their families until President Clinton did so May 16, 1997. Notice who was president in the 1930s? FDR, the hero of the progressive leftists.

Since you don’t think being abducted, tied up, tossed on a plane, flown halfway around the world to Afghanistan, thrown into a hell-hole, fed garbage and putrid drinking water, being beaten, and having your medical needs ignored isn’t “torture,” let’s do it to you and see how you like it.

What you consider torture is the environment Ray Charles and I grew up in when we were kids. Yes Wabbit stew was my favorite meal, especially if it was fresh off the road. Our medical needs were also ignored and the water taste like mud but the catfish like it. You could have said the same thing in 1942 about the unconstitutional rounding up and forcible relocation to internment camps of the Nisei.

While their parents, brothers and sisters cooled their heels behind U.S. barbed war, Japanese-Americans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team — all enlisted from the confines of the internment camps — went to Europe and distinguished themselves as the most highly decorated unit in the history of the U.S. Army for its size and length of service. Its 6,000 soldiers earned 7 Presidential Unit Citations and over 18,000 individual decorations for bravery — an average of 3 per enlistee — including 9,486 Purple Hearts, 22 Medals of Honor, 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, 588 Silver Stars and more than 4,000 Bronze Stars.

Have we learned nothing from history? Why are we letting people run our country who are just as ignorant, bigoted, and foolish as those of 1942? Why are we allowing some of our fellow citizens judge people according to skin color or how they spell their last name?

Shame on you, Mac. This country is capable of being better than that. Using “wartime” to justify the arrest and torture of innocent people just doesn’t cut it. Shame on you.

    http://www.sacbee.com/content/.....0638c.html – You’ll need to login though!

“Right after I left SOCOM (Special Operations Command), I asked my successor to put together a small team, if he could, to try to use the Internet and start trying to see if there was any way that we could track down Osama bin Laden or where he was getting his money from or anything of that nature,” Shelton said.

“To be candid, there were not many specifics in it,” Shelton said of the later briefing. “There were no names that surfaced that had not surfaced before through normal intelligence channels. There was no identification of any new players, or anything of that type.”

Shelton, though, said that a CIA representative and an FBI representative were present at the second briefing. And he said, “I know for a fact that I was told that they had been a part of the effort” to track al-Qaida through computer data-mining.

But cluelessASS, the FBI said they knew nothing about it. But Louis Freeh wrote something different in the Wall Street Journal link I provided weeks ago. The plot thickens cluelessASS!

Is that disgusting? Yes.

However, I fail to see how this constitutes an argument to vote for a political party that has violated human standards of decency in its conduct of the war against terrorists, botched its military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, presided over massive corruption at home, and done nothing to address the concerns of ordinary Americans over the stuff of daily living — jobs, incomes, health care, retirement security.

    @171
Yes, I believe it was and is worth it for a lot of reasons that I won’t go into here. I was merely answering your question of “what for” and why soldiers feel that way. If you notice, nowhere in my answer is “for themselves.” In almost all cases, when soldiers who have received medals for valor are interviewed or asked why, they will tell you that they didn’t do anything special, that they were simply doing their jobs. It is sometimes hard to understand why people chose to devote their lives to public service. The pay sucks, the working conditions are hell, the people you serve are rude and thankless, etc…. The military builds comraderie, friendships and a deep sense of loyalty to each other (teamwork). Most of the veterans wounded in hospitals absolutely can’t wait to get back to it! It’s a matter of pride, honor and absolute devotion to each other in the team!

Here is a hate letter written to PFC Joshua Sparling. We who think right know it is not from REPUBLICANS! It is a wacky progressive war protester, probably one of those who liked Hilary Clinton!

Josh was wounded in Iraq on November 20, and by the time he arrived at Walter Reed Medical Center he was almost immediately carted in for surgery. With a down moment he opened up a card which — on the surface — seemed like a patriotic “get well soon” kids’ note, only to open and see it said this verbatim:

    Dear, Soldier
Have a great time into he war and have a great time dieing in the war from Solider Miguel
    P.S. DIE.

Well ASSes, this is the type of person who supports your cut and run mentality!

Well, PuddyBud, I am sure you really put on your Sherlock Holmes Detective hat to arrive at the conclusion that the sick person who sent that note was a “cut and run progressive war protester”. (and you look so cute in that hat!)

But I did my own detective work and am now convinced the card was sent by none other than:

    Karl Rove.

Why? You see the “Solider Miguel” who signed it is just an anagram for “I Sum Oil Ledger”

    I901 – The Feel Gooder’s initiative

Another feel gooders initiative with no (ZERO)$$ for enforcement. No law enforcement agency will make any (ZERO)effort whatsoever to enforce it until one of the feel gooders pisses off one of the smokers and a brawl develops. Guaranteed!

I am not an advocate for smoking indoors, and in fact would have voted for this, except for it’s ever so flawed 25 ft rule. Smokers didn’t mind going outdoors for a puff, but many establishments don’t have a place within 25 feet which they can call their own and set up for smoking. Not smoking inside these establishment was not enough for the feel gooders. 25 feet was the new deal! So they are gearing up for a loss of business big time. So another tax revenue loss to the feel gooders!

It will be a major boon for the New Years celebrations at the local casino’s where you can dine, drink and smoke with almost ZERO taxes heading to the state and NO worry about pissing off a feel gooder to boot. Another Tax loss to the state by the feel gooders!

No more ferry smokin, you can get slammed with beer on a ferry, but don’t go outside for a smoke. The 25 ft rule doesn’t work here feel gooders! 25 knots should pretty well move the smoke away, but severe punishment must be made to the smoking public by the feel gooders! So addicts will now get their last puff in, in their car full of their family and children, just before they board the ferry! Or just drive around where possible and avoid the situation all together. Another Loss of Tax Dollars to the feel gooders.

Cigar Rooms and Cigar Stores? Well now here’s a total put out of business loss of total employment and the tax dollars that the Feel gooders have generated. Cigar Smokers will smoke at home, or on an Indian Reservation, buy online via the internet (www.cigarsinternational.com or other well known sites) or at the Indian reservation….and another massive loss of state tax dollars to the feel gooders.

Smoke eating machines and those that sell, install and maintain them in nearly all bars and smoking establishments….End of employment and business in Washington. Another loss of State tax dollars..to the feel gooders

So Feel gooders I’m going to light up my non taxed Internet purchased Cigar, have a non taxed home brew, and laugh like hell at the feel gooders!

When the Cig, food and drink sales drop at all these places, and the tax dollars that were being counted on don’t show up…..

Call on the feel gooders for relief!

Since the liberal reporters voted overwhelmingly for John “Our Military is Terrible” Kerry, the stories placed on the non-liberal plain paper are liberally biased! Since cluelessASS likes reading articles from liberally biased reporters, his biases shine. @196
Well, you had better hope that you own your home if you want to smoke. The Times has an article about business complying with the law. Roger Valdez is the manager of KC’s Tobacco Prevention Program for Public Health and the article quotes Valdez as saying “that condo and apartment buildings are probably not going to be subject to the ban because they are private residences, But the health department might rethink that if it receives complaints from the public.”

A poster on the PI site says that since it passed so overwhelmingly in every county that they should do another initiative banning tobacco even further. Such as: Raise the age to purchase tobacco to 21, Make it illegal to smoke in an enclosed environment (car, house, etc.) when anyone under the age of 21 is present.

I901 already made your house a “public place” if you receive any assistance from the state for most types of social service. So, if your 78 year old mother wants to smoke a cigarette in your home, and the state pays you to care for her, it’s illegal, you have to haul her 25 feet out of your house.

  210. GS spews:

    Thursday, 12/8/05 at 12:31 am

Which again begs the question, since they keep raising taxes on smoking, and seem to be so all dependent on that revenue, there will no doubt be losses in their revenue estimates.

The issue is really not smoking indoors, it is the 25 ft rule that has this thing blown out of site.

    Ha Ha gotta love it

  211. sgmmac spews:

    Thursday, 12/8/05 at 12:48 am

Yes, you do. You do know that passer-bys can smoke on sidewalks walking by entrances and doors……. while banning anyone inside from going outside and smoking on the very same sidewalk. Maybe the smokers inside should go outside and walk up and down the sidewalks smoking! How do you distinguish between passerbys and patrons outside? What if the passerby stops? I was blown away when I read that King County might try to apply the law to condos and apartments. I wasn’t at all surprised by the more restrictions post. I know they are coming with their guns blazing. Ironic isn’t it that our representative democracy is supposed to protect us from the majority inflicting damage on the minorities. I would vote for reasonable standards, there isn’t anything reasonable about this initiative.

  212. Donnageddon spews:

    Thursday, 12/8/05 at 1:41 pm

sgmmac, can I put you down as against public initiatives?

  213. sgmmac spews:

    Thursday, 12/8/05 at 10:31 pm

    Donna
I am starting to believe that, especially after several articles I read on them. Initiatives do sound good, majority rule sounds very fair and democratic. I saw the Snohomish Sheriff on Neil Cavuto on Fox and he said he didn’t have time to enforce this and he said if citizens expect his officers to show up after they call and report a smoker – don’t expect it, he also said he’s gotten some calls from aggravated people wanting to know why he said he doesn’t have time to be the “smoke police,” There are some real legal issues with this initiative. I’ve only voted a couple of times here in Washington State, since I moved here in 2000.
