Wednesday!

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 6/4/25, 8:02 am

2 of the 9 City Council members will be appointed rather than elected come July when Cathy Moore steps down. I have not been impressed with her, but I do think elections are the way to replace people, not stepping down mid term.

Dow Constantine, too. Although it being later in his term that he already wasn’t running for reelection isn’t quite the same. And Sound Transit wasn’t going to wait for a new CEO. It is an important job and important to fill with the right person, but so is King County Executive.

Trump tax bill would add $2.4 trillion to the deficit over a decade: CBO

Tariffs will reduce deficits by $2.5 trillion over 10 years: CBO

This is really simple: The GOP is shifting $250 billion a year of taxes from rich people to consumers. It’s not a complete fulfillment of the long-held GOP dream of replacing income taxes with a consumption tax, since it mostly only applies to the wealthy, but it comes close.

It takes a little while for a president’s economic policies to ripple through the economy, but we’re just now beginning to see what the next four years will look like:

Fed ‘Beige Book’ economic report cites declining growth, rising prices and slow hiring

But don’t worry, the cavalry is coming! Trump has a fix in mind: Replacing the current Fed management with one that will doctor the statistics. If you tell the rubes “everything is great!” and feed them fake numbers, they won’t notice the difference, will they? Will they?

Senate GOP talks cutting Medicare ‘waste, fraud’ to offset cost of Trump tax bill

Senate Republicans on Wednesday discussed the need to cut out waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare to achieve more deficit reduction in President Trump’s landmark bill to extend the 2017 tax cuts, provide new tax relief, secure the border and boost defense spending.

Cutting Medicare to pay for billionaire tax cuts was always on the GOP’s agenda; they just didn’t talk about it. But now they’re talking about it, because they need more spending cuts to pay for deporting essential workers as part of Trump’s ethnic cleansing.

Hey, speaking of parties with rapidly dwindling bank accounts:

The Wyoming Democratic Party’s State Central Committee is operating at a loss and could be left with about two weeks worth of funding by the end of the year, its treasurer said during a Sunday meeting in Rock Springs.

In its federal and non-federal accounts, the state party had $36,580.20 as of May 1, Party Treasurer Dudley Case said at the meeting. But the party has been spending more money than it has been raising each month, which has led to a $21,795.32 loss this year.

That’s about a $5,000 loss per month, in the first four months of the year, said Case.

    The Missing Engineers
The world’s need for power is outstripping the workforce that can build it. Aging populations and anti-immigration rhetoric aren’t helping
A shortage of skilled workers, especially engineers, is a growing problem in developed countries. In the US, the lack of skilled workers will hold back President Donald Trump’s attempts to increase manufacturing, even if the tariff regime stabilizes and businesses get ready to invest. Trump’s attacks on US universities’ international students, who tend to study engineering in a greater proportion than domestic students, will likely further sap the supply of skilled workers.
    >> I’m pretty sure they mean a shortage of experienced engineers who want entry level wages.
    >> Seems companies want specific skills and knowledge but they don’t want to pay for the engineers to learn them. “We only hire experienced engineers, let them learn on some one else’s dime.” then “Why can’t we poach skilled engineers?”

    Laying a controversy to rest,

A CNN investigation into a deadly incident near an aid distribution site in southern Gaza on Sunday points to the Israeli military opening fire on crowds of Palestinians as they tried to make their way to the fenced enclosure to get food.

More than a dozen eyewitnesses, including those wounded in the attack, said Israeli troops shot at crowds in volleys of gunfire that occurred sporadically through the early hours of Sunday morning. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), the US and Israeli-backed aid initiative that runs the site, said that Israeli forces were operating in the area during the same period.

Multiple videos geolocated by CNN place the gunfire near a roundabout where hundreds of Palestinians had gathered about half a mile (800 meters) away from the militarized aid site in Tel al-Sultan in Rafah. The designated route to the site along the coast, Al-Rasheed Street, is in an area under the Israeli military’s control and Israeli troops operate at a base nearby.

Weapons experts said the rate of gunfire heard in the footage, as well as images of bullets retrieved from victims, were consistent with machine guns used by the Israeli military that can be mounted on tanks. Multiple eyewitnesses said that they saw gunfire emanating from Israeli tanks nearby.

    Musk is going Ross Perot:

Billionaire Elon Musk seemed to suggest support of a third political party as he escalated a growing fight with President Trump that boiled over Thursday.

“Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle,” Musk wrote in a post on social platform X to his more than 200 million followers on the site, which he owns.

    https://thehill.com/homenews/media/5335305-musk-floats-idea-of-third-party-amid-feud-with-trump/

A couple of thoughts, though. First, I’m pretty sure Musk isn’t popular with 80% of the American public. It’s more like 1% or 2%. Second, by splitting the GOP into two parties, you’d most likely end up with the Real Republican Party and the Trump MAGA Party, with the latter being a small third party, but siphoning off enough votes from the Real Republicans to create an ongoing electoral problem for the Real Republicans. In which case,

Again, something we all knew. Je overstayed his student visa. Began working when he didn’t have the proper visa to do so and then lied about all that when he applied for citizenship.

    Tyler Pager White House
    reporter
Stephen K. Bannon, who has been one of the most vocal critics of Musk for months, said he is advising the president to cancel all of Musk’s contracts and launch several investigations into the world’s richest man.
“They should initiate a formal investigation of his immigration status because I am of the strong belief that he is an illegal alien, and he should be deported from the country immediately,” he said in a phone interview with me.

The end of this play could be hilarious but

Mahmoud Khalil … responded to the government’s claims that he’s a threat to foreign policy … in a sworn legal declaration unsealed Thursday. …

Khalil wrote in his multi-page declaration … “Why should protesting this Israel government’s indiscriminate killing of thousands of innocent Palestinians result in the erosion of my constitutional rights?” …

The Trump administration has argued that Khalil’s actions pose a threat to its foreign policy goal of combatting antisemitism …

    https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/05/us/mahmoud-khalil-columbia-case-charges

Wait, how is “combatting antisemitism” in the U.S. a foreign policy goal? Isn’t that a domestic policy? Oh I get it, Trump’s foreign policy is aligned with Israel, so protesting against Israeli genocide and war crimes isn’t allowed.

@79 That deputy marshal now knows what it feels like to be black. “You match the description of someone we’re looking for.”

ICE is being given quotas: “Arrest 3,000 immigrants a day, or your jobs are on the line.” Under pressure to meet their numbers, they won’t be careful how they do it. They’re operating without arrest warrants, and — as this case illustrates — are being sloppy about verifying identities before detaining people.

What are the chances U.S. citizens assumed to be immigrants will be snatched off the streets, spirited away to detention camps, and held incommunicado? It’s already happening. There’s gonna be a spike in missing persons cases.
