I should add that the robocalls are nefarious. They start off saying that they have some information about the Democratic candidate. The call then stays silent for a few seconds to see if the recipient hangs up. If the recipient doesn’t hang up, then the call then goes on to give negative information aboout the Democratic candidate. If the recipient hangs up, then they are called back multiple times (5 in some districts, 7-8 in others). Josh Marshall has several posts on this.

HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii (AFPN) — State and U.S. Air Force officials gathered here Nov. 2 to unveil Hawaii’s and the service’s first hydrogen generation and dispensing station.

The event marked the completion of a major achievement in a multi-phased alternative fuel vehicle development program that was launched five years ago.

“From the beginning, this has been a partnership between the state of Hawaii and the Air Force,” said William C. Anderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and logistics.

“We’ve been working together since 2001 to bring this project together and through that effort created the National Demonstration Center for Alternative Fuel,” Secretary Anderson said. “The 15th Airlift Wing, the (Air Force Advanced Power Technology Office) and the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies have driven this project forward.”

With higher standards for clean air and a need for less dependence on foreign oil, interest in alternate fuels has never been greater.

Increasing energy costs for the Air Force has significantly impacted money that would be better spent on the war on terrorism or recapitalizing the aging fleet.

Hydrogen is one of the key fuels considered for this initiative because it is renewable, abundant and efficient. Unlike other alternates, it produces no emissions.

“It’s great to be here today for such an exciting gathering for such an important subject. Our state is located 2,500 miles from anywhere and we are the most oil-dependent state in America,” said Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle. “The opening of the United States Air Force’s first hydrogen station is a major milestone for Hawaii and for the nation.”

The first phase of this project focused on the development of all-electric, battery-powered vehicles and fast charging infrastructure. Phase II initiated the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles.

In February 2004, Hawaii’s first fuel cell vehicle, a 30-foot shuttle bus powered by batteries and a fuel cell, was introduced. The bus has been operational here for the past two years.

This was followed by two additional fuel cell powered vehicles — a step van and an MB-4 aircraft tow tractor.

The development and commissioning of the DOD’s first deployable on-site hydrogen generation system is a step toward the future for the Air Force, Hawaii, Hickam AFB and the hydrogen economy, according to Mike Mead, chief, Air Force Advanced Power Technology office.

“Today’s Air Force is a deployable force, so we must have the technology developed to support the warfighter wherever they are deployed,” he said. “The on-site hydrogen generation or fuel system is one of those initiatives we are working on.”

In an effort to end this country’s dependence on foreign oil, the Air Force is leading the way.

“The hydrogen experiment is all part of developing domestic assured fuels so that the Air Force can do the job every day that you all pay us to do,” said Secretary Anderson. “And that job, of course, is to win the global war on terrorism.”

Nov. 5, 2006 – Without the help of American servicemembers, today’s verdict against Saddam Hussein would not have been possible, the commander in chief said today in Waco, Texas.

“Today,” the president said, “the victims of this regime have received a measure of the justice that many thought would never come.”

The former dictator will have an automatic right to appeal his sentence. “He will continue to receive the legal rights and due process that he denied to the Iraqi people,” the president said. “Iraq has a lot of work ahead as it builds its society that delivers equal justice and protects all its citizens. Yet history will record today’s judgment as an important achievement on the path to a free and just and unified society.”

10/6/2006 – WASHINGTON (AFPN) — Five years ago, America, still stinging from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, began striking back in the war on terrorism.

President Bush appeared on national television to inform the American people he had unleashed U.S. military might against the enemy.

Land-based bombers and Navy strike aircraft from carriers launched Operation Enduring Freedom shortly after 12:30 a.m. Eastern time on Oct. 7, 2001, attacking al Qaeda training camps and Taliban military bases in Afghanistan. In addition, U.S. and British ships and submarines launched about 50 Tomahawk missiles.

President Bush ordered the air strikes after the Taliban rejected U.S. demands to close terrorist training camps and hand over al Qaeda leaders operating in their midst.

“None of these demands were met,” he said during his address. “And now, the Taliban will pay a price.”

The coalition focused its attacks on sites used to recruit and train terrorists and help them communicate, aiming to defeat al Qaeda and the Taliban regime that harbored them and to prevent Afghanistan from ever reestablishing itself as a terrorist sanctuary.

President Bush warned that the military action there would be just one front in a long, ongoing attack against terrorism.

“Today, we focus on Afghanistan, but the battle is broader,” he said.

In a message to the Defense Department later that day, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld emphasized that the war on terrorism isn’t a mission the American people went looking for.

“Rather, it was thrust upon us,” he said. “We take these actions in self defense. We take them in deliberate response to the acts of war directed against the American people.”

Five years after coalition forces entered Afghanistan, U.S. officials measure progress in three major ways:

— Al Qaeda and terrorist safe havens are gone;

— the Taliban was removed from power; and

— Afghanistan has a democratic government that sets an example for other countries in the region.

Last month, President Bush marked the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks by noting headway made against terrorists and those who harbor or support them.

“We helped drive the Taliban from power in Afghanistan,” he said during a Sept. 11, 2006, address to the nation. “We put al Qaeda on the run and killed or captured most of those who planned the Sept. 11 attacks, including the man believed to be the mastermind, Khalid Sheik Mohammed.”

While Osama bin Laden and other terrorists remain in hiding, President Bush said, the United States’ message to them is clear: “No matter how long it takes, America will find you, and we will bring you to justice.”

Meanwhile, the United States continues to promote what President Bush calls an equally important aspect of the terror fight: setting conditions that prevent Afghanistan and other nations around the world from serving as safe havens for terrorism. And the best way to do that, the president said, is to promote democracy.

Afghanistan now has a constitution and a democratically elected president, parliament and provincial councils, voted into power by 8.5 million Afghans. Last week, as President Bush hosted Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the White House, he praised the Afghan leader as solid partner in the war on terrorism whose example is helping stabilize the region.

As the United States and its coalition partners help bolster this new democracy, they are also helping ensure Afghanistan’s security forces have the capability to defend their new government. The Afghan National Army is now 30,000 strong and the 43,000-member Afghan National Police continue to take shape.

Twenty-three provincial reconstruction teams operating throughout the country also are helping improve the Afghan people’s quality of life and extending the national government’s reach.

President Bush acknowledged these and other achievements made in the terrorism war during the 9/11anniversary last month, reiterating the call he made five years ago as he announced the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom. He reminded the nation that the terror war won’t be fast or easy, and he called on Americans to unite as they face the challenges still ahead.

“If we do not defeat these enemies now, we will leave our children to face a Middle East overrun by terrorist states and radical dictators armed with nuclear weapons,” he said.

“Our nation has endured trials, and we face a difficult road ahead,” he said. “Winning this war will require the determined efforts of a unified country. So we must put aside our differences and work together to meet the test that history has given us. We will defeat our enemies; we will protect our people; and we will lead the 21st century into a shining age of human liberty.”

Al-Qaeda
In the last two decades of the 20th century, along with the globalization of the world economy, and to a lesser extent a world popular culture, came the perception of a new phenomenon: a new organizational dynamic among Jihadists which was not organized along tribal, regional or national lines, but saw them organized internationally under the banner of an international Muslim jihad, conducted by extremists who were otherwise unrelated. Among such organizations, the multi-national presence of Al-Qaeda has become most prominent, allegedly responsible for carrying out the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States and many other terrorist attacks worldwide. According to some sources, this organization had been (and may still be) headquartered in Afghanistan, but has members and operatives in many countries.

The argument is put forward that this form of organization allows Al-Qaeda (and analogous groups) to carry out their form of asymmetric warfare (as they see it) more safely, as it prevents an aggrieved nation from launching an overt military attack upon another nation harboring Al-Qaeda members, since a nation can argue that Al-Qaeda might be within its borders but is an independent organization which the government does not support, whether or not the government sympathizes with their cause.

The counter-argument to this states that Al-Qaeda members and other international resistant groups do not exist in “disembodied space” or in international territory (i.e., the open seas, as pirates were claimed to do), but within the borders of a sovereign state, which is responsible for the capture or expulsion of members of such groups, and failure of a state to do this is tantamount to laying themselves open for aggrieved nations to attack them. Under this argument, the state of Pakistan, which refuses to allow US troops inside its territory, can be seen as a practical case in point.

However, there is some debate as to whether this qualifies as asymmetric warfare, as Al-Qaeda and other such organizations, which are not sovereign nations, are not legal combatants under the laws of war. They can therefore be more accurately seen as an international non-governmental paramilitary force, not subject to a command structure as a regular military force is, and (being united as an organization purely as a result of their religious beliefs) not affiliated with any specific nation’s interests or doctrine. They could, however, be seen as an entity separate from issues of government and sovereignty, against which a nation could legitimately wage a war.

WASHINGTON – Iraqi police detained eight suspected insurgents from a government building in Fallujah, Iraq, today, and coalition forces killed an al Qaeda assassination team in Fallujah on Oct. 31, military officials in Iraq reported.
Iraqi police officers detained eight Iraqi local nationals, including three of the Fallujah mayor’s personal security officers, for suspected insurgent activity after receiving attacks from a government building today in downtown Fallujah.

Following a rocket-propelled-grenade attack on the Joint Coordination Center in the heart of the city, Marines from Regimental Combat Team 5 were attacked with small-arms fire from a mosque. The Marines established positive identification of the target, returned fire and commenced to cordon off the area surrounding the mosque. Soon thereafter, Iraqi police officers arrived on the scene and entered the mosque.

A grenade was subsequently hurled at the Marines from a government building near the mosque, so the Iraqi police, with the Marines in support, gained entry to the structure and uncovered multiple AK-47s, ammunition and magazines.

The eight local nationals, seven of whom are employed in the government center, are not authorized by the Fallujah government to bear arms and were detained for further questioning.

In another operation, coalition forces killed an al Qaeda assassination team in Fallujah on Oct. 31. Coalition snipers heard gunshots and quickly responded to the murder of an off-duty Fallujah policeman by gunmen in civilian clothes. The Marines from 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 5, immediately engaged the armed gunmen and killed two of them. The third gunman was killed as he attempted to flee in a vehicle.

“We honor the service of the Fallujah policeman, Hamed Mohammed Jassim,” said coalition spokesman Marine Lt. Col. Bryan Salas. “He stood against the murder and intimidation campaign of the terrorists to help bring security and prosperity to his neighbors in Fallujah. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Assault rifles and other items were recovered from the gunmen.

Abu Abdullah, a leader of Hamas’ military wing in the Gaza Strip, said the policy of withdrawal “proves the strategy of the resistance is the right strategy against the occupation.”

“We warned the Americans that this will be their end in Iraq,” said Abu Abdullah, considered one of the most important operational members of Hamas’ Izzedine al-Qassam Martyrs Brigades, Hamas’ declared “resistance” department. “They did not succeed in stealing Iraq’s oil, at least not at a level that covers their huge expenses. They did not bring stability. Their agents in the [Iraqi] regime seem to have no chance to survive if the Americans withdraw.”

Abu Ayman, an Islamic Jihad leader in Jenin, said he is “emboldened” by those in America who compare the war in Iraq to Vietnam.

“[The mujahedeen fighters] brought the Americans to speak for the first time seriously and sincerely that Iraq is becoming a new Vietnam and that they should fix a schedule for their withdrawal from Iraq,” boasted Abu Ayman.

The terror leaders spoke as the debate regarding the future of America’s war in Iraq has perhaps become the central theme of midterm elections, with most Democrats urging a timetable for withdrawal and Republicans mostly advocating staying the course in Iraq.

President Bush has even said he would send more troops if Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander in Baghdad, said they are needed to stabilize the region

The debate became especially poignant following remarks by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the 2004 presidential candidate who voted in support of the war in Iraq. Earlier this week he intimated American troops are uneducated, and it is the uneducated who “get stuck in Iraq.”

Kerry, under intense pressure from fellow Democrats, now says his remarks were a “botched joke.”

Terror leaders reject Nancy Pelosi’s comments on Iraqi insurgency

Many Democratic politicians and some from the Republican Party have stated a withdrawal from Iraq would end the insurgency there.

In a recent interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, stated, “The jihadists (are) in Iraq. But that doesn’t mean we stay there. They’ll stay there as long as we’re there.”

Pelosi would become House speaker if the Democrats win the majority of seats in next week’s elections.

WND read Pelosi’s remarks to the terror leaders, who unanimously rejected her contention an American withdrawal would end the insurgency.

Islamic Jihad’s Saadi, laughing, stated, “There is no chance that the resistance will stop.” – Moonbats how come the CNNs of the world could not find these Muslims? Or I think they didn’t want to show America the real enemy. They were scooped!

He said an American withdrawal from Iraq would “prove the resistance is the most important tool and that this tool works. The victory of the Iraqi revolution will mark an important step in the history of the region and in the attitude regarding the United States.”

Jihad Jaara said an American withdrawal would “mark the beginning of the collapse of this tyrant empire (America).”

“Therefore, a victory in Iraq would be a greater defeat for America than in Vietnam.”

Jaara said vacating Iraq would also “reinforce Palestinian resistance organizations, especially from the moral point of view. But we also learn from these (insurgency) movements militarily. We look and learn from them.”

Hamas’ Abu Abdullah argued a withdrawal from Iraq would “convince those among the Palestinians who still have doubts in the efficiency of the resistance.” Did you say cut and run emboldens their resistance?

“The victory of the resistance in Iraq would prove once more that when the will and the faith are applied victory is not only a slogan. We saw that in Lebanon (during Israel’s confrontation against Hezbollah there in July and August); we saw it in Gaza (after Israel withdrew from the territory last summer) and we will see it everywhere there is occupation,” Abdullah said.

While the terror leaders each independently urged American citizens to vote for Democratic candidates, not all believed the Democrats would actually carry out a withdrawal from Iraq.

Saadi stated, “Unfortunately I think those who are speaking about a withdrawal will not do so when they are in power and these promises will remain electoral slogans. It is not enough to withdraw from Iraq. They must withdraw from Afghanistan and from every Arab and Muslim land they occupy or have bases.”

He called both Democrats and Republicans “agents of the Zionist lobby in the U.S.”

Abu Abdullah commented once Democrats are in power “the question is whether such a courageous leadership can [withdraw]. I am afraid that even after the American people will elect those who promise to leave Iraq, the U.S. will not do so. I tell the American people vote for withdrawal. Abandon Israel if you want to save America. Now will this Happen? I do not believe it.”

Still Jihad Jaara said the alternative is better than Bush’s party.

“Bush is a sick person, an alcoholic person that has no control of what is going on around him. He calls to send more troops but will very soon get to the conviction that the violence and terror that his war machine is using in Iraq will never impose policies and political regimes in the Arab world.” – Now where did he hear that except from the fringe moonbats!

National leaders in the Democratic Party, including Howard Dean’s Democratic National Committee, potential House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, possible presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and longtime party stalwart Ted Kennedy don’t want to talk with WorldNetDaily about an endorsement their party has received.

The endorsement came via a WND article by Jerusalem bureau chief Aaron Klein, who interviewed leaders of several prominent Mideast terrorist organizations, including Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and Islamic Jihad.

“Of course Americans should vote Democrat,” Jihad Jaara, a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, and infamous leader of the 2002 siege of Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, told WND.

“This is why American Muslims will support the Democrats, because there is an atmosphere in America that encourages those who want to withdraw from Iraq. It is time that the American people support those who want to take them out of this Iraqi mud,” said Jaara, speaking to WND from exile in Ireland, where he was sent as part of an internationally brokered deal that ended the church siege.

Jaara and others told WND that they believe if the Democrats come into power because of the party’s position on withdrawing from Iraq, that ensures victory for the worldwide Islamic resistance.

Together with the Islamic Jihad terror group, the Brigades has taken responsibility for every suicide bombing inside Israel the past two years, including an attack in Tel Aviv in April that killed American teenager Daniel Wultz and nine Israelis.

Muhammad Saadi, a senior leader of Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank town of Jenin, said the Democrats’ talk of withdrawal from Iraq makes him feel “proud.”

“As Arabs and Muslims we feel proud of this talk,” he told WND. “Very proud from the great successes of the Iraqi resistance. This success that brought the big superpower of the world to discuss a possible withdrawal.”

But WND was unable to get a single comment from dozens of telephone calls made over two days and messages left with various leaders’ offices and press secretaries.

“I’ll see what we can do,” was the best response WND obtained when asking for a comment on the endorsement, and that came from Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Hammill in Pelosi’s office. It came on the third call to that office.

The Democratic National Committee was approached at least six times, and multiple messages were deposited on a voice mail system handled by the courteous Rosemary, who said, “We’re extremely busy,” but there was no response, even after one spokesman in Sen. Barack Obama’s officer referred WND to the DNC because such a question would be in “Chairman Dean’s” territory.

The Democratic Leadership Council’s response to multiple phone calls was similar, a promise to call back later.

At least three messages left with Sen. Clinton’s office went unreturned after a receptionist forwarded the calls to an answering machine, which informed WND that, “No one is available to take your call at this time.”

Calls to Sen. Kennedy’s office actually reached a live person, who listened to the request and promised, “If we’re able to we’ll shoot you something. We can’t promise.”

Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar’s office generated a merry-go-round of telephone numbers. A call to his Washington office generated a referral to a Denver office, which generated a referral to a press office, which generated a referral to a cell phone. When a spokesman answered that number, the caller was referred back to the press office, which had an answering machine attached to the line. Leave a message.

A call to Sen. Harry Reid also allowed the caller to leave a message.

On the Republican side, Sen. Tom Tancredo, of Colorado, said those Mideast leaders are right – in one way.

He told WND that the assessment by terrorists who suggested U.S. voters choose the Democrats on Tuesday because they believe an expected removal of U.S. troops from the Mideast would hand their factions victory is hard to dispute.

“I guess the conclusion to which anyone could come … maybe they recognize that both the general nature of the Democratic Party and the people who are at its head are folks that would rather cut and run than stand their ground on an issue of this nature,” he said.

“They’re right. I also worry about a lot of things, the way the war has been prosecuted. But beyond Iraq, here’s what I believe. I believe that there are more Republicans than Democrats that understand we are in a clash of civilizations.

“In fact the idea that Western civilization has advantages over other civilizations, that is not a concept that most Democrats would buy into and I think the radical Islamic groups recognize that,” he said.

The president’s recent statements also have given those factions reason to hope for better results under a Democrat Party leadership than the existing decision-makers.

“Our goal in Iraq is victory,” Bush said during a campaign stop this week. “Victory in Iraq will come when that young democracy can sustain itself, and govern itself, and defend itself, and be a strong ally in the war against terrorists.

“The fighting in Iraq is tough, and I understand it’s tough, and you know it’s tough, and so does the enemy. They have no conscience. They kill innocent men, women and children. They film the atrocities, they broadcast them for the world to see. They offer no hopeful vision. The only thing they know is death and destruction.

“But they hope these violent images will cause us to lose our nerve. They make a big mistake. They do not understand the true strength of the United States. We don’t run in the face of thugs and assassins, we’ll defend ourselves,” he said.

Of course Goldie is a no show on this. This blows apart any further consideration who supports cut and run and who is supportive of cut and run!

“As a matter of fact, I believe the only way we cannot succeed is if we leave before the job is done,” he said.

Bush said Democrats have talked a lot about different plans to deal with terrorism.

“They’ve come up with a lot of creative ways to describe leaving Iraq before the job is done. Sometimes they say, ‘immediate redeployment.’ Sometimes they say they wouldn’t spend another dime on our troops. Sometimes they say the idea that we’re going to win this war is an idea that unfortunately is just plain wrong. However they put it, the Democrat approach in Iraq comes down to this: the terrorists win and America loses,” he said.

But in a statement on their website, the Democrats said, “We will protect Americans at home and lead the world by telling the truth to our troops, our citizens and our allies. We believe in a strong national defense that is both tough and smart, recognizing that homeland security begins with hometown security.”

“Democrats have a plan that is comprehensive – from repairing our military, to winning the war on terror, to protecting our homeland security, to ensuring success in Iraq and freeing America of its dependence on foreign oil – and it will finally prepare America for the security needs of the 21st Century. And we honor the sacrifices our troops, their families and veterans by making sure we take care of them when they come home,” the statement continued.

A new New York Times poll also indicated that Americans believe the U.S. will pursue a “quicker exit from Iraq” should the Democrats be in control. The survey said Americans believe the Democrats “have coalesced around a general position of finding a way to reduce or end American involvement in Iraq” but it also noted “there is substantial disagreement among Democratic Congressional leaders and candidates about exactly how to accomplish that.”

“Nearly 75 percent of respondents, including 67 percent of Republicans and 92 percent of Democrats, said they expected that Americans (sic) troops would be taken out of Iraq more swiftly under a Democratic-led Congress.”

The poll said 41 percent of respondents said they expected that troop levels would decrease if Democrats won control, while 40 percent said the party would seek to remove all troops. Forty-one percent said that they expected troop levels to remain the same if Republicans won, while 29 percent said they thought the United States would send more troops if the Republicans continued to control Congress.

Vice President Dick Cheney has reinforced Bush’s plans:

“Time and time again, we’re seeing examples of Democratic Party leaders apparently having lost their perspective concerning the nature of the enemy we face, and the need to wage this fight aggressively,” he said in a campaign stop this week. “No sharper example can be found than the Democratic Party chairman himself, Howard Dean, who said the capture of Saddam Hussein didn’t make America any safer.”

Corporate taxes under Reagan and now GWB have reached their lowest point since 1929. This fact alone should give any reasonable person a good idea where things are headed in this country and the world. Corporations, who DO use water, electricity, garbage collection services and all the other things provided by government through taxes, are now taxed at a lower rate than individuals are. They also receive special discounts on the resources that they use. This trend in America, for individual citizens to pay for the services used and the collateral environmental damage caused by corporations through their payroll taxes, began in the administration of Ronald Reagan. The now discredited theory used to describe this situation was aptly called the “Trickle Down Theory.” We were promised a trickle and we did not get even that. Real wages, after adjustment for inflation, fell in the Reagan years as they have in both Bush administrations. -(1)-
Labor was also hard hit during the Reagan administration
After Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers for striking for better working conditions and hired permanent replacements, corporate employers followed suit, thereby, for all intents and purposes, emasculating the Labor movement and turning the clock back on the decades of progress made for the American working man. Far from being upset by these developments the majority of voters inexplicably were enthused by them.-(2)-
So, during the Reagan years taxes were lowered on the upper 1% of the income tier, thereby increasing their wealth tremendously, and those in the lower income tiers received meaningless decreases accompanied by a DOUBLING of withholding on their Social Security. In addition, the Reagan administration could spend this “surplus” on whatever they chose. And they did– every cent of it– with no accountability to anyone but themselves. One of the things that they spent the money on was right wing death squads south of the border. They also spent the money that they acquired illegally through arms sales to the Iranians on similar projects south of the border. This was the famous Iran-Contra scandal that many of Reagan’s minions were convicted of master- minding and participating in. Reagan, of course, alleged that he had no memory of these dealings-(3)-, hence his other popular moniker: “The Great Forgetter”, a name that would prove to be ironically apropos in the ensuing years.
Reagan,as well as George W. Bush, ostensibly believe in smaller government, a strong military, lower taxes, and a balanced budget. However, both presidents have lowered taxes for the rich, increased military spending, and almost paradoxically created larger government and crippling budget deficits.-(4)- which they then leave for their successors to deal with. My belief is that these presidents did and do believe in a weak and small government and concurrent unanswerable and vast power in “private” multi-national corporations. The strategy now is to weaken our government,which is the only force powerful enough to control the corporations, by deliberately bankrupting it. There is no other reasonable explanation for their behavior.
This is why I hate Ronald Reagan.
Knowing these things, would you consider Reagan to have been a patriot, a knowing traitor, or an unwitting dupe of huge corporate interests? This fracturing of governmental power is a worldwide phenomenon and the way it’s being done is similar in many respects for the different countries involved. The power vacuum is, of course, being taken up by huge multi-national corporations. This is what is being referred to by scholars who know as “the New Feudalism.” But that is a topic for a different post.

Why do people think they need (must have!) corporations to survive?
People used to think they couldn’t have a government without sanction from a king, who presumably was granted his power to rule by God, and passed the authority on to others — like, the Sheriff of Nottingham. This is how effective corporate propaganda has been: that most people cannot envision life, order, and prosperity without gigantic corporations organizing every facet of it.
Consider this: In 1997 corporations worldwide caused $2.6 trillion dollars of damage, which they passed on to the world society at large. At the same time, they created $520 billion dollars of profit which they kept for themselves and their richest stock owners.
This is not good business on the part of world society and getting rid of these corporations is the highest priority we as world citizens have.

MARA LIASSON, NPR: Well, I mean, eight years versus eight months — I think you could say he had a lot more time to try. He says he tried and failed. But he wants credit for trying. And I guess he feels sensitive that he’s being attacked by some people for not doing enough.

I mean, in terms of being motivated by worrying about his legacy, I mean, legacies take a long time to get settled. But right now, it doesn’t seem to me — and the reason why I was kind of mystified by Clinton’s outburst is that it doesn’t seem to me that the consensus is forming that he is somehow to blame for 9/11 more than the Bush administration.

BARNES: Well, I haven’t read the report. And we do know this: that there is this radical fever raging among Muslims all over the world, particularly among young Muslim men, that has led to terrorist attacks on Europe, Asia, 9/11, for instance, here in the United States. And so, it’s growing.

The question is, would it continue to be growing, this terrorist threat, absent Iraq? I think it would be growing. Would it be growing as much? I don’t know.

Remember, when was the biggest growth period of all for Al Qaida? When did Al Qaida grow? It was not when we were in Iraq. It was in the 1990s when it was growing like crazy, when there were attacks on the United States then, in the earlier World Trade Center attack and the one on the embassies and so on. That’s when Al Qaida was growing. No Iraq then.

My guess is it would be growing anyway, because there’s this historical trend among Muslims.

WALLACE: Brit, we’ve had the president, over the course of the last few weeks, around the time of the 9/11 fifth anniversary, saying that we’re not safe but we’re getting safer and we’ve done a very considerable job in degrading Al Qaida.

Does this kind of report, indicating that there’s a new generation of Islamic terrorists and that, in fact, the overall threat is greater, does that contradict what the president said?

HUME: Well, it would seem to on the surface. The thing is we don’t know what the overall conclusions of this National Intelligence Estimate were. We know this one piece of it.

When it says the threat is greater, does it mean the threat is greater to the United States mainland, to our country? Does it mean the threat is growing worldwide? It’s not clear. Obviously, the threat continues to grow.

One wonders, too, about the idea behind it. I mean, what is it about our being in Iraq that so inflames Muslims who were supposedly less inflamed by our toppling this Muslim extremist government in Afghanistan? Hard to say. You know, it may be a recruiting ground, but for those who would — the idea that those are people who otherwise would not have been recruited I think is something you have to question.

Look, I think that when the NIE said the situation in Iraq has made the terrorist threat worse, I don’t think they’re just talking about Al Qaida — which, I agree with Fred, certainly they have been hurt to a large degree — but there have been all these other local, decentralized, fairly independent groups now that take their inspiration from Al Qaida or get ideas from radical Islamic Web sites, and they’re terrorists too.

Iraq is definitely a rallying cry. It’s also a front line. I think it is a recruiting tool now.

To say, how would it have been any different if we’d just focused on Afghanistan and poured lots of energy into solving the Israeli- Palestinian issue, which I guess is kind of the alternative approach to this, it’s impossible to say.
