Wednesday!

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 3/5/25, 7:59 am

Good morning you lovelies. Did you watch Trump’s joint address? I sure as shit did not. I had better things to do, like walk part of the way to Drinking Liberally in uncomfortable shoes. Probably not my best idea ever, but it beats the alternative. Anyway, if you watched, congratulations on being more willing to be lied to by a jackass than me.

Snowball in July!

by Darryl — Monday, 7/29/24, 8:59 pm

It’s been over a week since President Joe Biden withdrew from reelection and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. And what a week it has been! The Harris campaign has snowballed into a formidable challenge to the felonious former guy.

I couldn’t be more pleased. You see, in 2020, during the Democratic primary season, I engaged in debates with my friends at Drinking Liberally about who the Democrats should nominate. My first choice was Joe Biden. I felt he had the best chance of defeating an incumbent old guy. Joe Biden was a highly experienced, stable, thoughtful, elder statesman, who was best equipped to defeat an incompetent, sociopathic, narcissistic, sexist, racist, agent of chaos.

My second choice was Kamala Harris. I thought she had both excellent policy positions and great charisma. I was pretty pleased when the ticket was Biden—Harris.

Now, having Harris at the top of the ticket is like a breath of fresh air. It has an energy not unlike Obama’s 2008 campaign. The response has been overwhelming:

A week since announcing her bid for president, Vice President Kamala Harris has raised more than $200 million dollars, according to her campaign.

…

The Harris campaign said 66% of the donations came from first-time donors. Along with fresh dollars, the campaign has signed up over 170,000 new volunteers since president Biden announced he would step down and endorsed her to be the Democratic nominee last Sunday.

I’ve got a good feeling about this…

The Washington Democratic delegation is totally on board and ready to roll in support of Harris at the Democratic National Convention.

Every four years we hear it: “this is the most important election of our lives.” But sometimes that trite expression is reality! A second Трамп term will be about 2025 times worse than the first Трамп term….

Wanna keep the Harris momentum going? Activate yourself and do something! Donate to the Harris campaign. It’s easy. Even if you can only donate a few buck, your contribution adds to the snowballing movement in the best way—as another small donor. Volunteer for the Harris campaign. Make a plan to vote, and help other’s prepare to vote. Get involved.

Don’t just live history…help make it!

Wednesday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 8/9/23, 7:50 am

If it’s Wednesday, it’s Carl is talking about his bus trip home from Drinking Liberally. I know it’s very complicated, but man is it annoying when it says 6 minutes away for 10 minutes. Is it traffic? Is it technical issues? Is it one of those things where the drivers switch in the middle of the route, but something happened?

Family stuff ahead, so who knows if I post even less frequently, more erratically. Annnyway.

I love taking the bus. Last night coming home from Drinking Liberally, it was the best! A group of 50 something women having a night on the town got on and were aggressively trying to flirt with the bus driver. “Oh he’s my favorite driver, he can take me anywhere.” Delightful.

Also, and this was 10:30, some teens hop on. Too much time in the summer, but good for them finding things to do. Being able to hang out. Taking the free for them bus Downtown.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Wednesday Morning Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 6/2/21, 6:47 am

Darryl noted yesterday that Drinking Liberally is back. It is so great to be vaccinated. To touch other people. Hell, even not having to worry about the dingy bathroom is a blessing. It’s great to be back with people.

I also took the bus for the first time in over a year. And am back to work from work. The return to normal is happening so quickly. It’s great.

If you haven’t been vaccinated, you should. It’s free. The more people get vaccinated the better for everyone. Let’s stop this horrible virus.

Also, please wash your hands right now.

Opopopen Thread.

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 6/12/19, 8:29 am

The store in front of the bus stop near Drinking Liberally always has delivery cars parked in it. At least at the time I am leaving. Yesterday. Yesterday! Yesterday, the delivery car pulled into the stop while the bus was at the red light. Don’t do that. I realize parking can be at a premium in Capitol Hill, but not so much at 10:30. In conclusion gaaah.

Open Thread 7 May

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 5/8/19, 7:59 am

The second time in as many weeks coming home from Drinking Liberally, the bus passed without stopping. Last week another one came soon. Yesterday it was 10 more minutes. It was pleasant out, but goddam. I don’t know where I’m going with this, but should I call Metro if it happens again?

by Darryl — Tuesday, 2/5/19, 6:05 pm

6:05: Here we go!

6:06: Prepare for an onslaught of lies, lies, lies, lieslies.

6:07: There is a small crowd here at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern for Drinking Liberally.

6:08: Why is Melanie wearing pajamas.

DemocratIC agenda. Don't be petty.

— Christina Reynolds (@creynoldsnc) February 6, 2019

6:10: He has said absolutely nothing so far.

6:11: Wait…”The Great Crusade” wasn’t the liberation of Europe! He is basically feeding his base with anti-Islamic dog whistles.

— Trump Sniff Counter (@TrumpSniffCount) February 6, 2019

Not everything is an applause line.

— Carl Ballard (@BallardCrl) February 6, 2019

6:19: The economy is good. That’s because Trump inherited the Obama recovery, and he hasn’t totally fucked it up. Yet.

6:22: What companies have come back to the U.S. as a result of the G.O.P. tax scam?

6:23: The U.S. is a net exporter of energy. But that was achieved under Obama. “Thanks Obama!”

Our economy is so hot Trump is gonna move on her like a bitch

— Jessica Mason Pieklo (@Hegemommy) February 6, 2019

6:29: I hate these fucking anecdotes. For every Alice there is a Joe Arpaio, so fuck off, Drumpf.

6:32: Here comes the bullshit “dangerous southern border” part of the speech.

6:33: “Caravans of refugees are coming!!!!!11!1!!1!” When, exactly, did Republicans become such fucking cowards?

6:37: Human traffickers, MS 13, and caravans, OH MY!

96 Americans die from gun violence every day. Every day. Yet, Trump will never mention that. He's only concerned about victims of crime when he can use their stories to further his agenda

— Joe Sudbay (@JoeSudbay) February 6, 2019

Human trafficking? You mean like what may have happened to the kids this presidential administration lost track of after they took them from their families at the border? #SOTU19

— Ruth H. Hopkins (@RuthHHopkins) February 6, 2019

6:42: Let’s see…Drumpf says 300 girls rescued from 1000 pimps!?! That is a very large pimp to girl ratio!

6:45: Drumpf describes his wonderful “barrier”. Did he get some funding from Mexico yet?

"I will get it built! And Mexi….uh.."

— Sam Seder (@SamSeder) February 6, 2019

6:46: “Walls work and walls save lives”. That should convince the Mexicans.

6:48: “More women serving in Congress than anytime before.” Drumpf does get sine credit for that, but not how he thinks!

6:50: “First ever program focusing on economic empowerment for women in developing countries.” Bullshit. Obama and Clinton had such programs. Hell, Shrub probably did as well.

Trump has one move. Scare white people that brown people are rapists, drug dealers, murderers and sex traffickers.

That is All This Is.

— Mordant FreedomVoter (@MordantFV) February 6, 2019

Did Trump claim credit for the electoral backlash against Trump?

— Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) February 6, 2019

6:56: Drumpf declares a war on “global freeloading”.

Note to @realDonaldTrump: Patients with pre-existing conditions already have protections written into law. It's called the Affordable Care Act. Stop the attacks on our care. #SOTU #HealthCareVoter #ProtectOurCare

— Laura Packard (@lpackard) February 6, 2019

7:01: Drumpf is all about paid family leave. We’ll see how long that lasts.

7:06: Yay for more nuclear weapons! “Mush Room Cloud! Mush Room Cloud!”

Applause for withdrawing from the INF treaty?! WTF? Who the hell applauds a failure in nuclear arms control agreements?

— Mordant FreedomVoter (@MordantFV) February 6, 2019

Nothing scares seniors on universal basic income and single payer health care like talk of socialism.

— ⚡️LOLGOP⚡️ (@LOLGOP) February 6, 2019

7:16: Drumpf says “radical regime of Iran” as if he is trying to convince people (and himself) it is true.

7:23: The State of Our Union is 75 years ago.

I bet Judah doesn't think there were good people on both sides. #SOTU

— shauna (@goldengateblond) February 6, 2019

7:29: Drumpf gives a stirring speech asking us to chose greatness. Tomorrow he will Tweet something about “Cryin’ Chuck”.

7:40: Ummm…happy lunar new year?

Stacey Abrams looks great, relaxed & strong! She's rocking this #SOTU response!

O.p.e.n…t.h.r.e.a.D

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 1/30/19, 8:41 am

On the bus home from Drinking Liberally last night, there was a homeless man with a keyboard. He was hitting the keys, but it wasn’t making any sound. At some point he started singing under his breath. In many ways Metro buses are homeless shelters, especially later at night. The louder version of that is something that happens at many homes.

I am on the bus after Drinking Liberally, and am behind someone who smells strongly like vaping. I have smelled worse many times on the bus, or on the light rail. Hell, many times on this route.

But what is our obligation to smell reasonable on the bus? And did this person move in that direction by switching from smoking to vaping?

2018 Midterm Election Thread

by Darryl — Tuesday, 11/6/18, 5:12 pm

Game on, boys and girls! It’s election day, and the polls have closed in half the states.

Kindly note that this is an election thread. Keep on topic or kindly shuttle your ass to the open thread below.

I’m headed to Drinking Liberally now, so surprise me with your insights in the comment thread.

6:01: Well…at least Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) has won!

6:04: Beto still leads by a hair. And Klobuchar (D-MN) has won.

6:05: Looks like Felons in Florida are going to be able to help elect the next President!

6:07: Cool…I am just getting caught up here after arriving at DL. Hey…a D is leading in NE for Gov? Interesting.

6:16: My early assessment is that this is not really a blue wave. More like a blue splash. There are some very pleasing results, like Ted Cruz trailing a punk rocker–Ted Cruz is a weasely punk. But many races are going, more or less, as expected.

I feel like people are not making a big enough deal about Florida restoring voting rights to formerly incarcerated people. There are about 1.5M people (20% of FL’s Af-Am adult population)who stand to benefit from this. In 2016, Trump won Florida by just over 100,000 votes.

— ana marie cox (@anamariecox) November 7, 2018

6:32: Oh…cool.

Donna Shalala flipped the second House seat of the night for Democrats on Tuesday by beating Republican Maria Elvira Salazar. https://t.co/f4i4tDLKGA

— Stone Cold (@stonecold2050) November 7, 2018

Many of you hear “Donna Shalala” and think, “Oh yeah, Clinton’s HSS secretary.” But Donna Shalala was the Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin—Madison when I earned two degrees. She signed my diplomas. I’ve chatted with her. So…cool.

6:59: WOW! Kansas! Gov!

BREAKING: Democrat Laura Kelly defeats GOP's Kris Kobach to become next governor of Kansas, @NBCNews projects. https://t.co/GEzfm4Reei pic.twitter.com/pIb9gRfKrF

— CNBC Now (@CNBCnow) November 7, 2018

Looks like everything is going to come out just as expected. D’s take House by OK margin but not blowout, R’s gain a little ground in the Senate. D’s gain some governorships and state houses.

— Samuel Minter (@abulsme) November 7, 2018

Look at it this way. We won't have Attorney General Ted Cruz.

— Joan McCarter (@joanmccarter) November 7, 2018

7:21: MSNBC is now calling the House for Democrats.

The NYT currently projects a national popular-vote margin of D+9.2%. For comparison, the last five largest margins, considered wave elections:

1994: R+7.1%
2006: D+8.0%
2008: D+10.6%
2010: R+7.2%
2014: R+5.7%

By historical standards, it's a popular wave.https://t.co/IRkQLDZ2dX

— Sam Wang (@SamWangPhD) November 7, 2018

HELL YES THEY ARE.
Three flipped gov seats. A whole bunch of House flips. A whole bunch of down-ballot statewides. https://t.co/YUUyfiacaK

10/10 Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 10/10/18, 8:25 am

Yesterday night, One Bus Away, as is sometimes its wont, lied to me. So I left Drinking Liberally and instead of waiting for a couple minutes, I waited for the better part of a half hour. It wasn’t rainy or cold.

So the first few minutes are saying that the bus was coming. Then that it had arrived, but, obviously, I hadn’t seen it. Then by the time I was sure it wasn’t coming, it said that the next bus was 10 minutes away (turned out to be a bit longer). So, is it rude to go back in the bar after saying your goodbyes, and then leave again in 5 minutes?

I should also say that One Bus Away is basically magic, but I only write about it when it doesn’t work as well as I would like.

Cleaning House

by Darryl — Thursday, 9/20/18, 7:15 pm

It has been a long time since we’ve suffered “commenter issues” here at HA. But it has come to my attention that have a commenter who has increasingly become obsessed with “outing” another commenter—one who choses to remain anonymous.

I am talking about the person who comments as Mark Adams. If you regularly play in the comment threads, you have probably noticed. I didn’t, because Mark’s comments come off to me as so utterly dull and devoid of insight, that I rarely read them. His obsession has led him to email Goldy demanding that he “out” another commenter. Yeah…right. Like that is EVER going to happen. Goldy and I finally discussed our “problem child” on Tuesday.

At the same time, the other day, I got an email from our friends at the Living Liberally that said, simply:

We thought you should see this.

And an email from Mark was forwarded that, in my mind, is indistinguishable from the rant of a crazy person. I present it to you in (nearly) its entirety:

I am a little disappointed that living liberal has not registered with the Secretary of State of Washington.

What the fuck?

I have an ongoing issue with a person who is a troll on Horsesass.org.

Dude…you are essentially admitting to BEING TROLLED. That is a lifestyle choice. You can stop being trolled anytime you want. (Or any time we decide you will stop.)

It is a nearly defunct blog.

OUCH!

Okay…you actually got us there.

There is a weekly meeting of Drinking Liberally that is put on the site every Tuesday by Darryl Holman. Who is the weekly host of Drinking Liberally.

Dude!

Most of the speakers on Horsesass are anonymous.

Actually, Mark, everyone knows who everyone is. The blog is configured so that only YOU cannot tell the identity of “speakers” on this blog.

Unfortunately they use it as a shield and a sword, particularly Roger Rabbit.

Wait…you are bitching about an anonymous commenter in the COMMENT THREAD of a “nearly defunct blog”?!?

GET! A! FUCKING! LIFE!

Darryl Holman is one of the minions of David Goldman for
Horsesass and he knows who RR is.

I’ve honestly never heard of a David Goldman.

RR states he’s an attorney and is a party hack. He should be on HA as himself.

Nope. His occupation, hobby, sexual and faunal orientation, ear length, or hat size are totally irrelevant to whether or not he uses his real name. You don’t make the rules. This blog is private property…we make the rules.

He has attended drinking liberally and I’m fairly someone there knows who he is.

Yes…I recall a person showing up at DL who introduced him/herself as Roger Rabbit.

At some point I intend to go to see if I can find out…

You are free to stop by. You might find some people there who have met a person introducing him/herself as Roger Rabbit.

…but this evening I suspect based on a post by RR on HA that I would be greeted by a friendly or not so friendly police officer of some type.

Paranoid much?

Yes I intend to out RR, but I think it’s an open secret as to who he is.

First. Goldy specifically told you to stop trying to “out” RR. You are, of course, free to attempt to out out anyone you want. But you have now lost the privilege of using HA as part of your demented quest.

Before spoiling folks fun some Tuesday in Seattle I just want you all to know I think I have a serious issue.

Yes…we all recognize that you have a serious issue.

I can only say that RR is breaking ethics rules as an attorney and member/official of the Democratic party.

Hogwash. You appear to lack sufficient information to know about which you write.

[Stuff deleted about Mark’s identity]. I think RR and others on the list should [use their real name] least then they might not say things they would not say face to face or if their mum was there.

Except that our policy is that commenters can be anonymous. Your opinion on the matter is irrelevant.

A little help would be appreciated (anyone know who RR is perhaps Mr. Holman)…

Dude…nobody is the least bit interested in helping you to “out” RR, especially people who have nothing whatsoever to do with HA

…and I encourage participation on HA, though you all are in New York.

Wait…you are suggesting that the Living Liberally folks in NYC participate in the HA comment threads?!? (*Snicker*)

So here is the deal Mark. Go away. Your participation is not wanted or welcomed here. You are now blocked from commenting. If you try to circumvent being blocked, we will back-delete any comments that sneak through.

And finally, get some help. Your obsession with rabbits is unnatural. Take some advice from Rudy (substituting “rabbit” for Rudy’s “weasel”):

And for the rest of you. Please have mercy. Don’t taunt someone who cannot comment back. I’ve already done that for you.

Let’s wish Mark a successful post-HA recovery.

Open Thread August 1 2018 AD

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 8/1/18, 7:09 am

I’m writing this yesterday on the bus home from Drinking Liberally. So if there was something particularly Trumpish in the mean time I’m not ignoring it by writing how stinky the bus is.

But, y’all! It’s like stale fries with a side of burning oil. Why? I don’t see anyone eating fries (or burning oil).

Also, probably unrelated, but it was 18 minutes late. One Bus Away should have a feature where they let you know how your bus will smell, so you can choose the next one.
