Monday Open Thread

Since there wasn’t a post on Friday, this is a bit stale. King County Assessor John Arthur Wilson has got to go. Like, obviously don’t vote for him for Executive but also, he has to go. No fucking stalkers. Like I hope he gets help, but not while he has a position of public trust.

Oh look! A Republican admits he was wrong after kids are dead.

For the last three days, state Rep. Wes Virdell has been out with first responders in Kerr County as they searched for victims and survivors from the devastating floods that swept through Central Texas early Friday morning.

Virdell’s closeup view of the havoc wreaked on his district has … left him reconsidering a vote he made just a few months ago against a bill that would have established a statewide plan to improve Texas’ disaster response, including better alert systems, along with a grant program for counties to buy new emergency communication equipment and build new infrastructure like radio towers.

“I can tell you in hindsight, watching what it takes to deal with a disaster like this, my vote would probably be different now,” said Virdell, a freshman GOP lawmaker from Brady.

He’ll probably get ex-communicated from the GOP and primaried for that. No, not for his vote, but for admitting that voting the party line was a deadly mistake that killed his constituents’ children.

Buried in the fine print of Big Ugly Bill is a sneaky provision allowing private jet owners to write off 100% of the cost of their planes in the year of purchase.

So various outlets have been running pieces of people who went to Camp Mystic, and all their fond memories and lifelong networking of campers and something about them all struck me as interesting.

If you look at Camp Mystic’s website, the founders are of course a white Texas family, and there’s pictures of their extended blonde family looking pretty Aryan. And then each generation that took over the camp looking every bit as white and Aryan as the previous.

And then you can look at the current staff, and it will probably surprise you not at all to notice that the one non-white staff member is the groundskeeper/janitor.

And then you can actually see the last few years of camper group photos, and while there are a few who look like they might have some Latino genes and one conspicuous Asian girl this camp is very very very elite white coded.

And also non-denominational Christian, which if you’ve been around long enough is code for the kinds of Christians you don’t really want to associate with if you actually care about the teachings of Jesus.

But I’ve spent some time in Texas so these kinds of neo segregationist, traditional clubs and societies is not remotely surprising.

To be clear, none of these kids deserve to die for the racism in the system that produced their gathering.

They are growing increasingly desperate. Chris Rufo spends the weekend combing through every bit of public media on a tenured professor and finds a conference where he discussed a book titled

    “Hitler’s American Model
    The United States and the
    Making of Nazi Race Law”
    James Q Whitman*

And then he sent a press release to Fox News:

Ivy League professor father of NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani linked Hitler’s Holocaust to Abraham Lincoln during comments at a 2022 panel discussion hosted by the Asia Society.

Aside, Mamdani’s mother directed the film adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri‘s ‘The Namesake” a debut novel that flung Lahiri into the rare territory of ‘author who is brilliant beyond her years” whose further works have failed to live up. But that first one is really something.

Right. This is on the adults who knew the camp was in a flood zone, there were no warning systems, and didn’t care.

Republicans can’t stop lying about the Big Ugly Bill:

The legislation does not, as the agency put it, include “a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries.” Moreover, while the Social Security Administration memo said the law helps protect Social Security, experts say the provisions weaken the program’s funding by reducing the tax money it receives.

I think Elon Musk starting a splinter Republican Party is an excellent idea. We need two Republican parties, one to put Trumpers in, and another to put the rest of them in.

Trump’s latest brainwave is to bring back plantation slavery. It doesn’t violate the 13th amendment because the slaves will be free to be deported at any time, if they tire of being farmers’ “responsibility.”

Here’s how it works: The immigrant farmworkers are arrested, then farmed out to the corporate farmers as forced prison labor. All perfectly legal under our present system.
