When I was a little kid growing up in San Diego, the summertime brought all sorts of interesting troubles. My stepdad took to waking up in the middle of the night to run into the kitchen with this giant home made flyswatter thing he’d made with a broom handle and flat chunk of thin PVC with holes drilled into it, and it was exactly like that with the cockroaches. Snap the light switch and the floor would be covered with them and he’d run around smashing as many as he could.
He’d only get a minute or so before they’d scatter away, but he’d probably kill a couple thousand in that time.
We finally figured out that spreading TSP under the house and soaking it down with the hose was a pretty good way to cut down on the numbers, but it didn’t solve the whole problem.
