Sure, the city could do a better job of keeping the bike lanes clear for bicycles, but the fact someone else who deserved a ticket didn’t get one isn’t a defense for his infraction. That argument would get him laughed out of any first-year law class. And there’s zero evidence in the video that he got his ticket for going around an obstacle in a bike lane. And if the ticket was unfair, he could have contested it in municipal court, and any decent judge would’ve thrown it out if he went out into the street to get around an obstruction. From the video, it’s clear he paid the $50 fine, and he doesn’t say he challenged it, so it couldn’t have been too darn unfair. This guy probably just likes to ride in the street, and doesn’t give a damn that he’s interfering with motorists’ use of the street. There are obstacles on sidewalks, too, which pedestrians have to walk around, but would you argue that’s a reason for pedestrians to walk in the street if it’s not necessary to get around the obstacle? Your first-year law student would need to read the ticket to find out which ordinance the cyclist was cited under, then consider the facts of the case in light of that ordinance. As a practical matter, probably the only legal work he’ll need to do to get his client off is show up in traffic court and move to dismiss the ticket if the cop isn’t there, too.

What was special 70 years ago is not so anymore. Now you need them about as much as they need you.

    What sets “rural America” apart anymore is that unlike most of the rest of America, you refuse to accept all of this, while simultaneously refusing to sacrifice all of the valuable things you get from it. You are still perfectly welcome to pull stakes and go live in a plywood shack in the Alaska bush and publish angry manifestos.

    You just have to do it without coffee or porn.

    @97 Time for a little history lesson. The Founding Fathers didn’t have that much of a problem with slavery; they wrote a Constitution that more or less protected it, and it would take a Lincoln and the Civil War to abolish it.

    Fast forward to 2016. What does President Putinpuppet do? He asks for Russian help to win the election, and gets it, and ever since then all his foreign policy actions have favored Russia over our own national interests.

    Now fast forward again to 2019. What does President Putinpuppet do? He uses taxpayer money to bribe Ukraine into helping him win the 2020 election.

    The entire Republican congressional delegate and 87% of its voting base sees nothing wrong with this.

    Doctor Dumbfuck sees nothing wrong with it, either.

    Al Capone, John Gotti, Meyer Lansky, et al., at least knew what they were doing was wrong. Trump knows what he’s doing is wrong, too. That’s why he’s tried so hard to cover it up.

    Clearly Trump, in addition to acting like a criminal, thinks like one. Clearly, Doctor Dumbfuck doesn’t. That’s the main difference between Doctor Dumbfuck and Trump or any gangster you can name.

    They, at least, were able to tell right from wrong. But poor Doctor Dumbfuck is so stupid he can’t even tell his own asshole from a hole in the ground.
