    The “free market” numbskulls who plunged our economy into the worst depression since the 1930s by deregulating everything are now trying to tell us that it’s government regulation, not overleveraging and collapse of credit markets, that’s preventing job creation.

    Why would anyone except a complete blockhead believe them?

    Now let’s take a look at a specific case in point: Privately-held Gibson Guitar Corp., which is owned by CEO Henry Juszkiewicz and his partner David H. Berryman.

    “In August, Gibson factories in Nashville and Memphis were raided, and rosewood from India was confiscated. … The action stems from enforcement of a … Federal law concerning illegal logging ….

    Now listen to Juszkiewicz’ whining: “We are definitely paying the price to manufacture in the United States.”

    Juszkiewics doesn’t like being forced to use substitute materials whose harvest doesn’t harm the environment. “He’s reportedly spending $10,000 a month to lobby Congress to enable Gibson to make guitars the way it wants to,” CNBC reports.

    Meanwhile, Juszkiewics’s whines: “The real issue, in my mind, is the uncertainty and cost of government regulation, which has been increasingly intrusive.”

    No, asswipe, the “real issue” is that you’re breaking the law.

    Actually, it doesn’t make any sense, except in terms of greedy bastards who think they’re above the law putting profit ahead of all else.

    There’s a reason why we have these laws and enforce them. Apart from the environmental damage, unfair trade puts legitimate businesses out of business, and puts those companies’ employees out of work. Juszkiewics doesn’t have the support of other business people in his industry — they’re against him. Far from being a victim of excessive government regulation or overzealous enforcement agents, he’s a villain. His posturing about his company’s “American jobs” is nothing but a smokescreen for criminal behavior.

    A House subcommittee is voting today on a bill that would bar the EPA from regulating farm dust. Of course, the EPA isn’t trying to regulate farm dust, but voting on legislation that has anything to do with reality is so pre-midterms.

    Republicans like John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and Herman Cain have been citing the nonexistent farm dust rule for months as a textbook example of EPA overreach. In a way, they’re right — it is a textbook example of EPA overreach as envisioned by the GOP, in the sense that it’s totally made up.

    The hubbub over this phantom rule — surely one of the most controversial regulations that never was — involved a slow-moving federal agency, and a Republican Party with EPA in its crosshairs.

    “I do believe that the EPA does have the ability to change its mind,” said Rep. Kristi Noem (R-S.D.), the sponsor of the bill to be voted on Thursday. The EPA has now confirmed that it does not intend to strengthen standards on farm dust.

    Considering what some of the police have been up too lately, I’d say they’re a bit suspect too. That the West Net folks are heavily armed doesn’t make me feel any safer. It does make me feel glad that I never decided to move out to Kitsap County. I’m perfectly comfortable with the Gig Harbor police.

    I’m not the least bit ant-gun, but I don’t think you can look at what’s going on and not think our current situation is a bit crazy and that some reforms are needed. However, I do think it’s fairly easy to decide to not look at what’s going on and to babble slogans instead. I’ve been posting links to shooting on a fairly regular basis to break through that.

    According to the WSJ sales were the best since 2007. But, that’s just sales for 1 day and a year has 365 of them in it. Plus, that’s just sales and there were crazy mark downs going on. We’re going to have to wait a bit to see how retail actually did this year. We’re also going to have to wait and see if people spent cash or went back to their old bad habits and racked up a bunch of debit.

    Hopefully, Obama and Co. did alright and we’re turning things around and hopefully people have learned their lesson and didn’t go in the red.

    Walker is not the only recall target. Recall petitions are also circulating against the state’s Republican lieutenant governor and four more GOP state senators. Democrats would need to win only one of those seats to take control of the state senate.

    Whatever the outcome, these recall efforts will force Republicans to spend tens of millions of dollars just to defend offices they currently hold. That’s money they can’t spend on races elsewhere.
