    We’ve seen protests all over the country where people who didn’t want to disperse were arrested w/o the use of pepper spray. I doubt that the officers who forced open a protestors mouth and sprayed pepper spray directly into his lungs were following policy.

    We get that you don’t care and that you get off on watching violence on your computer screen. Luckily most of the world isn’t as sick and fucked up as you. Right now that UC Davis clip is the top hit on Google News and is front page news all over the world. Unlike you, the rest of the world is horrified.

    The UC Davis police chief is doubling down on the stupid, btw. She keeps claiming that the officers were trying to exit the area and the students had cut them off and weren’t allowing the officers to leave. The video clearly shows that none of that’s true.

    To #6, 11, 18, 19 & 21: Imagine your liberal son/daughter/brother/sister (we all have at least one) coming to you looking roughed up, eyes swollen and red from the pepper spray. Imagine them telling you a story of being attacked by the police while at an otherwise peaceful protest. Do you use that opportunity to scold them, and give the police an attaboy for setting your idiot kid straight? Or do you find yourself wanting to go after the cop who stepped so far out of line?

    These are all somebody’s kids. And there’s a good chance their parents don’t agree with what they’re doing anymore than you do. But I doubt many of these parents are rushing to the defense of the cops right about now.

    It’s perfectly normal to disagree with the politics of these protesters. But some of you are taking it to such an extreme that you’re excusing (and even encouraging) physical violence against these guys. If you can’t see what’s wrong with that, then you have bugger things to worry about than whether or not some parks are being properly maintained.

    Take it down a notch and try acting like human beings for a while. You’re making the rest of us look bad.

    UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi on Sunday said she has been inundated with reaction over the incident, in which an officer dispassionately fires pepper spray on a line of sitting demonstrators.

    “When you start picking up human bodies, you risk hurting them,” Kelly said. “Bodies don’t have handles on them.”

    After the students were pepper sprayed they still had to lift them and I’ve been watching all sorts of folks in similar cases around the nation who were not pepper sprayed get arrested and hauled away.

    After reviewing the video, Kelly said he observed at least two cases of “active resistance” from protesters. In one instance, a woman pulls her arm back from an officer. In the second instance, a protester curls into a ball. Each of those actions could have warranted more force, including baton strikes and pressure-point techniques.

    Yes, they could have, but there was no need. No one was harming anyone or at risk of harming anyone.

    “What I’m looking at is fairly standard police procedure,” Kelly said.

    If that’s standard police procedure, than how come there’s video of police all over the country behaving differently? If it truly is “standard police procedure” it’s probably time to change the procedures.

    Could a young woman who’s been sexually assaulted or raped go to those officers for help without fear? I’m not a young woman, so I’ll just leave that as a question.

    A month later, Haney’s dog, Hunter, also died suddenly. Soon after, Voyles called Haney to tell her that her barrel horse, Jody, was dead. Lab results revealed a high level of toxicity in her liver. Voyles sent her animals’ test results to Range Resources. In response, Range Resources wrote to Voyles to say that, as the veterinarian indicated, the horse died of toxicity of the liver, not antifreeze poisoning. The company did acknowledge that the vet suspected the horse died of poisoning by heavy metals. Subsequent tests of the Voyleses’ water supply by Range Resources revealed no heavy metals.

    Voyles’s boxers began to abort litters of puppies; six were born with cleft palates. They died within hours. Others were born dead or without legs or hair. Unsure what to do, Voyles stored 15 of the puppies in her freezer. (Range Resources says it was never notified about the puppies.) By December, Boots, the grand-champion goat, aborted two babies. Haney had to put her down the day after Christmas.

This is not the kind of fight she usually takes on. “I’m not going to sit back and let them make my kids sick,” she says. “People ask me why I don’t just move out, but where would I go?     Among the iconic images that have emerged from the Occupy movement have been several that perfectly encapsulate the arrogance and ugliness of the 1 percent and their lackeys, tools and fools. Who will ever forget the Wall Street insiders drinking champagne while both literally and figuratively sneering down their noses at the protesters, or Iraq War veteran Scott Olsen being carried bloodied from what the Oakland police and their allies had turned into a battlefield here at home, or the inflamed face of an elderly Seattle woman as she was helped to flee a police pepper spray attack, or a non-violent and unarmed young woman taking a full stream of pepper spray straight in the face during the crackdown in Portland? As many predicted, those who stand to lose if this nation begins to live up to its stated and increasingly mythical ideals of freedom and democracy and fairness and justice would not let this go on forever. It amused them. Then it annoyed them. Then they got scared. Then the truncheons were swung.

    The Occupy movement is entering a new phase, but it is not going away. When the powers that be come to terms with that reality, their responses will degenerate even further, and it remains incumbent upon all who want the Occupy movement to succeed that the movement itself remain non-violent, and that one of its prime goals be to attract and inspire ever greater numbers of supporters. The polls continue to show strong support for the economic goals of the Occupy movement, even as the politicians continue to wage their Shock Doctrine class warfare, and the movement must consider whether each planned action will inspire or alienate potential allies in the wider public. This is a time for determination, for principle and for clarity. The truth and the facts remain on the side of the Occupy movement, and supporters of the movement must ensure that they remain so.

With a court order preventing the city of Boston from tearing down the encampment, the occupiers are planning to maintain their protest indefinitely at Dewey Square, in the heart of Boston’s financial district, in the shadow of the Federal Reserve and Smith Barney. Despite the temporary restraining order that finds that the Occupy Boston plaintiffs “have clearly met their burden of establishing that abridgment of their First Amendment rights would constitute irreparable harm,” the Boston Police Department is preventing the occupiers from winterizing their encampment.

    In the last few days, Boston police have blocked the occupiers from bringing in a winterized tent intended as a safe space for women, and have searched a truck for “contraband” tents and insulation materials. In an exchange that resembles a vaudeville comedy routine, a Boston police officer explains to activist Clark Stoekley why he searched the truck for “items we don’t want in the camp”:

    A top Webster Electric Cooperative official’s habit of watching pornography while on the job made the office environment so hostile, women began to refer to it in coded words and one complained to human resources, according to a lawsuit filed Friday.

    The suit was filed Friday in Webster County Circuit Court. It names as defendants General Manager Thomas E. Houston, the utility itself, board member John William Greer and the remainder of the board. The plaintiff is J. Michelle Luebbert.

    An attorney for Houston vigorously denied the suit’s allegations; an attorney for the board issued a statement saying the board was investigating Luebbert’s claims.

    Luebbert, who worked at the cooperative since 2002, said in her suit that the board of directors fired her on Sept. 21, after she complained to them about Houston watching pornography in his office. Workers could see his screen through an open door. She was manager of accounting and finance at the time of the firing.

    “His viewing progressively became more frequent and active, the extent of which was pervasive, continuous and offensive,” her attorney Jay Kirksey wrote in the suit. The day before she was fired, the suit says, Luebbert “was offered a settlement if she would remain quiet as to Defendant Houston’s conduct.”

    When there’s 60,000 jobs and 200,000 people that need jobs it’s pretty hard to just go out and get a job. Add to that that there’s a skills imbalance, those people that need jobs don’t have the skills that the jobs that need filling require. I suppose they could go to school and get those skills, but the schools are all already full, people are broke so they can’t pay for school and Pell Grants are getting cut. Jobs, also, aren’t equally distributed everywhere and places where there used to be jobs, like rust belt cities or Vegas don’t have those jobs any more. People could move from where there aren’t jobs to where there are jobs, but like I said before people are broke and moving takes money. You also might need to sell your house in order to move. Good luck with that one.

    Given all that, I see no reason why people who simply shout “get a job” should be treated as credible. They should be heckled and lampooned.

    Okay, so the deficit talks collapsed (who wudda thunk?) because Republicans demanded cutting trillions from Social Security and Medicare (but not one penny from the Pentagon’s bloated budget!) and raising taxes on the middle class — so the rich can get more tax cuts. What’s so bad about that? Automatic defense spending cuts will kick in and Bush’s tax cuts for the rich will expire. The GOPers are like little kids brandishing switchblades and threatening to cut their own pensises off if they don’t get what they want. I think Democrats should call their bluff on that one!
