    It’s time for campuses to pay their local law enforcement to take care of law enforcement on campus.

    On most of these campuses, law enforcement is the responsibility of sworn police officers who report to university authorities, not to the public. With full-fledged arrest powers, such campus police forces have enormous discretion in deciding whether to refer cases directly to district attorneys or to leave them to the quiet handling of in-house disciplinary proceedings.

    The Penn State police did investigate a complaint in 1998 about Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant coach who was charged last week with sexually abusing eight boys, and turned it over to the district attorney, who declined to prosecute.

    But many serious offenses reach neither campus police officers nor their off-campus counterparts because they are directly funneled to administrators.

    @4: The truth is usually simple.

    Republicans are in fact ugly, even the perfectly coiffed spokesmodels (human shell, reptilian core).

    Nothing is sacred anymore.. Even traditional right wing sorts of recreation are trashed.

    An old dirt road that meanders up a ridge here has been widened and fortified. Acres of aspen, maple and cherry trees have been cut. In their place is an industrial encampment of rigs, pipes and water-storage ponds, all to support the extraction of natural gas through hydraulic fracturing, a process known as fracking.

    “Who wants to go into their deer stand in the predawn darkness and listen to a compressor station?” lamented Bob Volkmar, 63, an environmental scientist who went grouse hunting the other day through these noisy autumnal woods. “It kind of ruins the experience.”

    I understand this article would have been relevant 5 years ago when only some bloggers out there were ‘reporting’ this:

    But prior violations are plentiful. For example, Bank of America’s securities unit has agreed four times since 2005 not to violate a major antifraud statute, and another four times not to violate a separate law. Merrill Lynch, which Bank of America acquired in 2008, has separately agreed not to violate the same two statutes seven times since 1999.

    Of the 19 companies that the Times found to be repeat offenders over the last 15 years, 16 declined to comment. They read like a Wall Street who’s who: American International Group, Ameriprise, Bank of America, Bear Stearns, Columbia Management, Deutsche Asset Management, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Putnam Investments, Raymond James, RBC Dain Rauscher, UBS and Wells Fargo/Wachovia.

    Eight participants in the Occupy Springfield movement were handcuffed after refusing to leave the lot owned by Hammons Properties.

    Just over a dozen police officers asked protesters sitting on the grass to leave, then advised them they could be cited for trespassing and arrested.

    When protesters declined to comply, that’s what happened.

    The arrested protesters were taken to a detention van, but police officers couldn’t unlock the van and ended up taking the eight to jail in patrol cars.

    Joann Wolfe, who was driving by the protest and stopped to see what was occurring, used her cellphone to take video of the arrests and the confusion over the locked van.

    “I think the whole thing of 20 officers for this peaceful protest is a joke,” Wolf said. “I think it’s ridiculous. They want to make a big scene to say they’re in charge.”

    Pastor from Springfield arrested in Texas

    A Texas youth pastor who previously lived in Springfield has been arrested and charged with having sex with a teenager.

    Chad Foster, 32, of Cypress, Texas, was charged with sexual assault of a child on Nov. 3, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Foster grew up in the Springfield area, according to people who know Foster and a blog kept by Foster.

    Court documents indicate that Foster met a 16-year-old girl while he working at the Community Faith Church in Hockley, Texas.

    Foster met the girl through a high school ministry program. The two started communicating via text messaging after exchanging phone numbers, court records say.

    INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) — A former western Missouri pastor has pleaded guilty in the death of a former member of his church.

    Fifty-two-year-old David Love of Independence pleaded guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Randy Stone.

    Stone was shot to death in his insurance office in March 2010.

    Love, who had been charged with first-degree murder, accepted a plea agreement that will require him to serve life in prison with a possibility of parole in 250 years.

    Love was the former pastor of Hope Baptist Church in Independence, which Stone and his wife, Teresa Stone, attended.

    Family members have said Love and Teresa Stone had been having an affair for years.     She has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder in her husband’s death.

    Wasn’t there something in the bible about not coveting your neighbors wife?

    I’m going to have to read the Springfield News-Leader more often.

    SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Schenectady Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Saturday morning on Fifth Ave.

    The fatal shooting occurred at approximately 5:14 A.M. in front of Joe’s Bar, located at 1306 Fifth Avenue.

    According to a few witnesses, an individual fired several shots into a crowd standing outside the bar, striking three victims.

    Lt. Mark McCracken says the victim of the fatal gunshot wound has been identified as Rashad Robinson, age 23, of Schenectady.
