    In the Scotland Referendum, I noticed that they went out of the way to make it easy to vote. The voting age was reduced to 16, and polling stations open until 10. In Scottish Parliament and local council elections, they do not use winner take all, like our Congress and British Parliament does.

    I spend more time with financial media and investing blogs than political news and blogs. So I’m fairly well tuned in to what the financial corner of society thinks. Believe it or not, a lot of these people are still locked into Reagan-era supply-side dogma. They believe our economic woes come from taxing capital; and that if the rich don’t have to pay taxes, they will create jobs.

    Our economy is stuck in a slow-growth rut because consumers don’t have spending money. And they don’t have spending money because wages have been relentlessly pushed downward. Yes, it’s as simple as that — it’s a wage problem.

    If investment incentives could fix this, it would be fixed, because the world is awash in capital. Corporations have trillions of dollars they’re not reinvesting in growing their businesses because the demand isn’t there in end markets. It makes no sense to build more factories, buy more equipment, and hire more workers if you can’t sell what they make.

    So what are corporations doing with all that idle capital? Right now, they’re mostly using it to buy each other. We’re now seeing a merger binge. Until this year, they were mostly using it to buy back their own shares and pay dividends to their shareholders. (Of course, the corporate execs themselves are big shareholders and get big dividend checks.) Giving corporations and rich executives more tax cuts won’t create jobs. It just won’t. We’ve already gone that route, and it didn’t create jobs during the eight years of GOP tax-cutting under Bush.

    Although our economy is weak and sputtering, it’s doing better than most other economies. Why? Because we, albeit in a very limited way, responded to the Great Recession with Keynesian remedies. Europe initially took the austerity path favored by conservatives, and the consequences were disastrous for them, with several Euro Zone economies experiencing 1930s-type unemployment in the 20% to 30% range. Keynes was right, and conservatives are wrong, about how economies work.

    Believe it or not, quite a few conservatives are actively calling for abolishing the federal reserve and restoring the gold standard, which has been identified by reputable economic historians as a principal cause, if not THE principal cause, of the Great Depression. Why are conservatives so impermeable to facts, knowledge, experience, history, learning? Mostly self-interest. How does that saying go? “It’s difficult to get a man to believe something when his salary depends on not believing it.” I believe Mark Twain said it.

    The bottom line is, conservatives are WRONG about economics, and no one should give any credence to their economic theories or arguments. They’ve been proved wrong again and again. Now, once again, for the umpteenth time, we are seeing it demonstrated in real-life economies that their brand of economics is garbage.

    Just tune them out and we’ll survive. If too many people listen to them, none of us will survive, including them.

    In the race to meet the EPA Tier4 mandate, looks like GE has won the battle, as EMD will not show up until 2017. Problem for EMD parent Caterpillar, the mandate kicks in in January. I was looking at the annual Locomotive special edition of TRAINS Magazine, and in the Editor’s note and Motive Power Review section, they mentioned that EMD had met Tiers 1, 2, & 3, and these have been tightening Diesel emissions since 2002. Meanwhile, last year, GE rolled out their Tier 4 prototype, and it’s in production this year. EMD plans to keep the Muncie plant going during this hiatus with rebuilds and export locomotives. Could see this coming, 2 years ago, they announced that they would not be building a version of the Class 66 Diesel Electric locomotive in Europe, that meets tougher EU diesel emissions rules, it appears that they are throwing in the towel with the SD-70ACe in North America. The reason with the Class 66 is the market for Diesel Electric locomotives has collapsed, partly due to electrification advancing, and a new option in Electric locomotives, called last-mile. On Bombardier’s TRAXX Last Mile, the diesel generator used in sidings, yards, and ports, is supplied by Caterpillar.

    I was looking at the article I mentioned at 33), and it did say that EMD does have a backlog of orders, including from UP and BNSF. Still, Diesel Electric locomotive emission rules have been tightening for over a decade, EMD should have been ready, but they may have decided to continue with the tried and true 710 series engine, a two-stroke design, instead of starting fresh.
