Six Climbers Presumed Killed On Mount Rainier
A guided climbing party on Mt. Rainier’s difficult Liberty Ridge route apparently has been swept off the mountain by rockfall or avalanche. Search helicopters spotted camping and climbing gear strewn over a large debris field and detected pings from avalanche beacons more than 3,000 feet below the climbers’ last known position. The climbers apparently are buried in snow, and park rangers said this afternoon there’s no hope any survived. Search efforts have been suspended for the night because of dangerous conditions in the area.
