Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 5/3/23, 8:13 am

Jay Inslee is not going to seek a 4th term. Not totally unexpected, but still, it feels like the end of an era. It’s still a year and a half away from the election to replace him, so no need to pick just yet. Ferguson and Franz have both done a good job at their current positions, although I was not impressed with Ferguson on the King County Council. Should be an exciting campaign.

Open Thread, Monday

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 5/1/23, 8:09 am

A new connection between Downtown and the waterfront just opened. I live nearby, so I gave it a bit of a test walk. It’s not as bad as maybe Twitter would have you believe. There are buildings blocking most of it from the waterfront. So it isn’t Viaduct Part 2, but at the same time, there isn’t much of a view.

There are sidewalks and bike paths. They may be smaller than you might want, but I am glad that activists have made that sort of thing necessary in projects, even if they absolutely shouldn’t be satisfied. I think when family comes to town and we show them Pike Place, it’ll be easier to show them the waterfront.

But ultimately, the issue is more cars on the waterfront and in the urban core. And yeah, there are already a lot of cars on it. I imagine it will be gridlocked pretty frequently, especially during rush hour.

Friday Open Thread

– What is happening with the transit tunnel? I understand the tracks needing repair. Shitty but it happens. But if hypothetically, I want to go North, I go to the South platform and make sure the bus is Northbound (presumably from the direction, but also hopefully signage and the intercom). I’m sure there will be signs, but what a mess.

– Man, Jenny Durkan, the more that comes out. Jeez.

The Seattle/ King County free clinic is happening at Seattle Center. Happening now through the weekend.

Hey, hey. Hey you. Get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

I wasn’t too worried when the legislature didn’t pass a permanent drug possession bill. I would have preferred money and effort to get people help. Still, we shouldn’t criminalize addiction. And sometimes no solution can be better than a bad solution just to make a deadline. But man, some of the localities that would fill the void. Gross on toast.

Don’t forget to get your ballot postmarked or dropped off by tomorrow. If you live in King County, please vote yes. If you don’t like voting on levies regularly, you can take an Office chair from Tim Eyman.

Anyway, please vote yes on the King County crisis center levy. I have been told that the Vashon parks levy is a good one.

Friday Thread

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 4/21/23, 8:13 am

After the Tacoma boat fire, I have been thinking about why it got so much less attention than East Palestine. It got plenty of attention locally, and it wasn’t ignored nationally. But national media and activists just haven’t run with it the same.

The visuals are as compelling, and the toxicity is probably worse. It will effect more people, because it’s in a city.

It might be as simple as it is in a city, and people have pretty fucked up notions about cities are dirty already. It might be Tacoma specific: A very diverse place, with a certain reputation plays different from a heartland town. There are also some left activists who are obsessed with blaming everything bad on Pete Buttigieg, and maybe a fishing boat isn’t an excuse to complain about him winning the Iowa Caucasus. Maybe I am too cynical.

Wednesday Morning Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 4/19/23, 8:14 am

Good morning. Yes, SPD should apologize for how it handled the 2020 protests. But as noted in the article, Chief Diaz has already apologized. The department should apologize and apologize and apologize. It was really bad. But absent real reform, or more, does anyone believe it wouldn’t happen again?

Monday!

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 4/17/23, 8:00 am

I got rid of my car recently. I didn’t use it during the pandemic. And then I hardly ever used it outside of commuting. So I finally ditched it. I don’t really miss it.

So I am glad to live in a city where you can (usually) get around without a car. In more cases than a lot of people realize, it’s easier than driving. I’m lucky enough to have an employer who pays for my ORCA Card, so it’s much cheaper.

More than you might ever want to know about Seattle street trees? Impossible! The map! The pictures! The personal stories! The tree ordinance! What a great read.

Wednesday!

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 4/12/23, 8:08 am

– We just passed the missing middle bill. Very, very exciting.

– Still, I am uncomfortable with property rights arguments from lefties. I like the idea of a strong tree ordinance and it seems like it’s not in conflict with the city planting more trees.

– Gosh, Republican appointed judges doing what they were appointed to do. You would think that they would celebrate it.

If you’re in King County, you should be getting a ballot if you haven’t yet. It’s for the crisis centers. I hope that you will vote yes. The need is there. I would prefer we pay for these things through the normal government process, voting no won’t make the County Council take it up.

And for goodness sake, please wash your hands right now, and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Wednesday!

We’re stocking up on mifepristone in Washington. It’s important to have local leadership who are prepared in case of a bad outcome in the Texas case. Honestly, it’s awful that it might come to this. People who need abortions should be able to get them.

We’re entering the final weeks of this year’s legislature. I hope the legislature doesn’t weaken the police pursuit law. Let’s avoid car chases in our neighborhoods if possible. I encourage you to see what’s important to you in those stories and write your legislator.

Wednesday Morning Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 3/29/23, 8:09 am

I’m sure you all have discussed the capital gains tax ruling. But here’s me. It seems that there were a lot of people claiming that this is an income tax. So even though it wasn’t in the ruling, they now should argue that income taxes are legal. Exciting. Of course they won’t. The courts are about enacting policy Republicans can’t enact legislatively.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now and get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.
