    Let’s talk about women having control over their own bodies.. Being able to walk away from pregnancy as quickly as an asshat walks away from any responsibility for fatherhood..

    Good news! The abortion rate has DROPPED in this country.

    Why? Oh it’s gotta be because of all the crazy-shit teabagger anti-abortion legislation that created so many jobs since the teabagger explosion in 2010? That’s gotta be it right?

    Wrong!

    It would be easy to point to the wave of abortion restrictions that swept through state legislatures in 2011 — except that this data come from 2009, when those new laws weren’t yet in place. 

    No kids. It looks likes there’s just more effective contraception out there and women are using it.

    That research, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, found that use of long-acting contraceptives tripled between 2002 and 2009. Most of that increase happened, however, in the last two years. The proportion of contraceptive users using this method increased from 2.4 percent in 2002 to 3.7 percent in 2007. Between 2007 and 2009, though, it shot up to 8.5 percent.

    So good news. If you’re a woman and you don’t want to be left holding the bag, i.e. autonomy you have options other than a surgical procedure or an uncomfortable ordeal with a pharmaceutical abortifacent like RU-486.

    However one thing we haven’t talked about here is that in this last election almost all of the red states have turned REDDER even as some blue states like CA have turned completely blue. This means MORE oppression for women in red States..

    Great. Ladies make like a tree and LEAVE those backward places.. Depopulate the fuckers!

    Alternatively we lefties can INVADE the red states and take over! Wouldn’t that be sweet revenge??

    Two things.
    As you mention, the debate over abortion is not about abortion or fetuses. It is about control over a woman’s body. If the anti-choice crowd were really concerned about teh fetuses they’d be pounding the table for sex education and free contraception. But they aren’t, are they?

    More Red Red States – they’re in a death spiral in all ways shapes and forms. And in the end, those who can get out will and the powers in place now will reap the whirlwind.

    Now, back to our regularly scheduled Turkey Feed II.

    Don’t know where this fits, but up in Canada next week, there are 3 special elections to fill vacancies in Ottawa, the seats in Victoria and Durham, ONtario are not that interesting, but the one in Calgary Centre, which is usually a shoe in for Conservatives, is anything but. Going into the final days, it’s a horse race, as the Conservative candidate has not yet got too much support. This seat has been held by the Conservatives since the late 1960s. The only saving grace for PM Harper(who represents a seat in the Calgary area as well) could be, that there are 3 center to left of center parties competing, and the Federal Opposition, which currently is the New Democratic Party, is in 4th place. When more than one like-minded party competes in a race, it only splits the vote.

    THe Liberal candidate has gotten support(could be a bad omen for that candidate) from Liberal leadership candidate Justin Truedeau. Policies of his father are one of the reasons the Liberals have not won a seat federally in Alberta in decades. Although, listening to a podcast earlier this year of the CBCs only call-in talk show, a caller from Eastern BC/Alberta actually told a Liberal party operative that one of the reasons people in his area don’t give the Liberals much of a chance is that the Liberals actually seem to write off Alberata, and the people there don’t like a quitter. This by-election(the term the Canadians use), seems to be changing that.(The Conservatives currently hold all but one seat from Alberta, the NDP hold the seat of Edmonton-Strathcona).

    That’s an interesting story. Thom Hartmann has picked up on it, as well. I generally reject conspiracy theories out of hand, but I’m not sure that this one doesn’t have legs. Lord, the thought of Karl Rove spending his dotage in a federal prison is delicious, isn’t it?

    With the “Thanksgiving” holiday behind us, it was on to “Black Friday,” so named because of the pall it casts over our already devastated economy. Like you, I could hardly believe the socialist nightmare of repression that kept Americans trapped in their homes, penniless & desperate. Conditions were, of course, worse than during the Great Depression. Not since the 1930s have there been so many lined up for bread… makers, outside Williams Sonoma.

    Nate Silver also has some advice for future GOP candidates: “[A] Republican candidate’s path of least resistance runs not through … Pennsylvania or Colorado, but … through New Hampshire. Winning it, along with Virginia, Ohio and Florida, would give a Republican 270 electoral votes, just enough to win.”

    @22 As the article I linked @19 points out, if the Ohio SoS’s electoral vote scheme had been in effect this year, Romney would have won 12 of Ohio’s 18 EVs, even though Obama carried the state’s popular vote.

    Harper’s magazine has an article this month (which I can’t link to, because their website is down) about election-rigging. Basically it says 80% of America’s votes are counted by two companies controlled by rightwing partisans, nearly all of whose top executives are convicted felons, and the media and politicians are in denial about the massive vote stealing going on.

    The GOP’s vote-stealing schemes, when combined with their pervasive vote suppression efforts, make it clear that America is overwhelmingly anti-GOP, and if we had honest voting in this country Obama would have won both his elections by massive landslides. As it was, the antipathy against Republicans runs so deep that even vote-stealing and vote-suppression, combined, couldn’t stop the tidal wave of pro-Obama voters.

    Given what we know about the private companies who have their fingers in the election pie, I’m convinced the entire process should be kept in the public sector. Get rid of the fancy-shmanzy voting machines and have everyone vote on paper ballots, and count and tabulate them by hand, under the watchful eyes of party observers. That’ll solve the hacking problem.

    Roger Rabbit Commentary: As I said @20 above, we’re going over the fiscal cliff in January, because the unteachable Republicans learned nothing from their election defeat. What possesses them to believe they can get away with repackaging Romney’s fiscal plan as a “compromise”? Surely they know the Democrats won’t fall for that ploy. It looks like they want a recession so they can blame it on the Democrats.

    I saw the intolerance and racism the Democratic party showed in the passage of the 13th amendment, and see the same crap today.
