This is what Conservatives want. They see pregnancy as divine retribution for the sin of getting pregnant, and the woman must be punished for making herself sexually unavailable to the man for the time she is pregnant. When she is raped, she must be punished with carrying her rapists baby to term. When she is 11 years old and porked by her daddy or her uncle and gets pregnant, she has committed sin.
That case in Ireland is what the conservatives see as being the ideal situation, the woman sinned, became pregnant, and was punished accordingly.

Saw that, what a horrific story.
Once again mindless religiosity and dogma destroy, in this case a beautiful, young, accomplished woman – probably someone our resident trolls would call a ‘maker’, not a ‘taker’.
And the story is totally germane to our domestic discussion of women’s rights – this woman was experiencing a miscarriage of her pregnancy at 17 weeks – and as the fetus dies and putrifies (archaic term for necrosis or rotting that captures the process well), it introduces overwhelming bacterial infection and a process termed ‘sepsis’ or ‘septicemia’ – a condition with a horrific mortality rate, as witnessed here.
It is germane because this is exactly the sort of situation that now-kicked-to-the-curb Teahaddists and puddl-hero Joe Walsh told us couldn’t happen with ‘modern technology’.
This is part and parcel of the Republican war on women, which is actually a war on all of us who think – you know, us liberals and feminists and environmentalists and unionists – people who strive for freedom and fairness by applying thought and reason.
May this fucking tragedy open some hearts and minds….

Roger Rabbit spews:
@17 “Can any of these people talk?”
Most people can’t, nor write either.
Back in 1962, I became a Goldwaterite because conservatives of that time seemed to have a knack for making complicated things simple. (There were some problems with that, of the jamming-square-peg-into-round-hole variety, as I learned later.) While I now believe simpletons shouldn’t be put in charge of complicated problems, I continue to admire written expression that distills things down to their essence. (Kind of like Jack Daniels No. 7 does.) Which brings me to this:
“What [conservatives] fail to understand, in their self-righteous umbrage … at liberal economist Paul Krugman, who called for the President to hang tough against Republicans in the ‘fiscal cliff’ negotiations, is that Krugman is … right …, as in correct. Because a Depression – and that’s what has been threatening ever since the U.S. economy went off a cliff in 2008 – requires different medicine from a common recession, just as cancer requires different medicine from a cold.
“My real hero in this case is the other man conservatives most love to vilify these days, Fed chair Ben Bernanke. ‘Helicopter Ben’ got his nickname for suggesting that the government could just throw money from helicopters to halt a market collapse. In the end, in 2008, he didn’t do that. Instead the Fed gave trillions to the big banks, at the behest of then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson.
“The banks stuck the money in their vaults, gave each other huge bonuses, kept the bad loans Bernanke’s money had re-paid to squeeze debtors a little more, and stuck the rest in the Romney campaign kitty.
“What Bernanke originally suggested, what Krugman said should have been done, was to simply spend the money, instead of trying to get it into the system through the bankers whose policies had caused the collapse. And that’s the classic cure for Depression, which is a crisis in demand that eventually results in deflation as supply can’t find a market, contracting supply and collapsing the economy like an airplane falling from the sky.
“The Recovery Act of 2009 tried to do some of that. Krugman argues it didn’t do enough and, due to political opposition, did much of its work in inefficient ways, lowering some folks’ taxes instead of just getting people to work.
“The act was sized based on what government economists said the economy was doing at the end of 2008 – falling at an annual rate of 4%/year. Instead, it was falling at a rate of 9%, twice as fast. And it kept falling at that rate through the first part of 2009, while the act was being debated. Things were that bad.
“Krugman argues that because the Recovery Act wasn’t big enough, and because it didn’t focus enough on direct job creation, the recovery from that point has been weak. And it has been. He says the inability to get additional stimulus from a Republican Congress, combined with Europe’s decision to act like Republicans and plop for austerity, has kept the recovery weak. What he wants now isn’t austerity, but more stimulus, and he thinks calling the Republicans’ bluff on the ‘fiscal cliff’ – which he calls nonsense – is the best way forward.
“You know who agrees with Krugman? China. Our biggest creditor, Europe’s biggest creditor, wants growth policies instead of austerity. … When the world’s biggest creditor says we’ve gone too far in trying to repay his loans, pay attention.
“When you have bad loans, you write them off. That reduces the money supply so you order up new money. Then you put that money to work on new loans, for things that will lead to more economic growth. Like infrastructure. That’s what would get our unemployment rate down …. Put people to work building stuff that the rest of us can use to expand the economy at an accelerating rate, and we’ll be fine in no time.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: This is about the most concise explanation I’ve seen of why Obama is right, and Romney and Boehner and Austrian School guys and supply siders are wrong, and why it’s essential for Obama to stick to his guys and slap those guys down. I doubt very many of the voters who slapped them down on Nov. 6 understood the economic mechanics — at least, not as clearly as this writer does — but they instinctively realized who is screwing them and had enough sense to not vote for getting screwed even more.
Not that it was hard to see, when the one-percenters ran a ham-fisted vulture capitalist, who got rich the dirty way, for president (what were they thinking?), which perhaps is a measure of how far their hubris and arrogance had gone.
It may be that raising taxes on the rich won’t solve the deficit problem and is merely punitive. But that’s fine, too. Revenge has its place in any social order. Obama, like Lincoln, has been far more conciliatory toward a group of people who trashed our country than they deserve. Lincoln didn’t put the Confederates on trial because of the kind of people they were, but because of the kind of man he was. Same with Obama vis-a-vis the banksters. Obama’s idea of revenge is to make them pay the same taxes the rest of us do.
They should take that deal.

Everything has a bottom. The ocean does; falling stock markets do; alcoholics hit rock bottom; perhaps even the Republican Party has bottomed and is beginning a turnaround.
Maybe the decline of organized labor has bottomed out, too. With workers beaten down by increasingly greedy and abusive employers, and a labor-friendly Democratic president making appointments to the NLRB and federal courts, it may be time for a labor turnaround. There certainly are signs.
“As snack eaters mourn the loss of their beloved Twinkies — Hostess Brands says a worker strike is shutting them down — more employees across the country seem to have an appetite for walking off the job.
“Analysts say the reason may be that workers feel they’ve had enough when it comes to issues over pay, hours and benefits and that it’s time to fight back. ‘There’s nothing to lose when you’re up against the wall,’ said Emily Rosenberg, director of the labor education center at DePaul University. ‘Workers feel that the courts are against them,’ she added. ‘The politicians are against them and the boss says there are 15 workers waiting to take your job at a lower rate of pay. There is no other answer than to organize.’ …
“During the 1970s, there was a yearly average of 289 major work stoppages involving 1,000 or more workers in the U.S. By the 1990s, that had dropped to some 35 each year. In 2009, there were only five. But in 2010, there were 11 major work stoppages in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That climbed to 19 in 2011.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: We’re still a very long way from the union clout of the 1950s or the labor activism of 1970s, but maybe the pendulum is starting to swing the other way.
Before we go further, let me point out a couple of things here. First, the 1950s were the high water mark of union membership (as a percentage of the workforce) and union jobs. Who were those union men of the 1950s? They were the returning veterans from World War 2, the heroes who fought and defeated Hitler and Tojo, who then faced off against Stalin and Khrushchev in the Cold War — all staunch anti-communists. In the 1950s, American union halls were among the most anti-communist places on earth.
Union activism ramped up in the 1970s because that’s when the Decline of the American Worker began. Anti-worker government policies kicked into high gear at the same time as recession and inflation — which are not acts of God or nature, but engineered by humans — squeezed the working class. As we now know, the Forces of Greed didn’t stop at the factory gate, but reached ever higher into the middle and professional classes. The lesson of that time is that even such traditionally non-union professional workers as doctors, lawyers, and accountants need to be in solidarity with the guys on America’s shop floors, because the greed of the banking and Wall Street elites has no bounds and will consume everyone in their path if they aren’t stopped early on.
And before our conservative friends chime in with wails about “union thugs,” let me point out that CEOs, stockholders, and one-percenters are doing just fine. The Owner Class now gets nearly 60% of America’s GDP, the working classes only 40%; it used to be the other way around. And I don’t need to remind you which group is the “takers” and which the “makers,” do I? The resurgence of labor and the uptick in strikes isn’t a Bolshevik movement aimed at overthrowing capitalism. It’s simply the “makers” bargaining for a fairer share of what they produce, i.e. there’s no logical reason for the “takers” to take it all. What is bargaining if not capitalism? You can’t get much more capitalist than a management-labor bargaining table. About the only thing more capitalist than that is a farmer’s market.
Workers demanding their fair share will be good for the economy. The Greed Class is too short-sighted to realize that workers are their customers, and beating down wages destroys their markets. The Hostess Bakery strike will turn out to be a good thing. Twinkies will come back, but in the hands of new owners who are better stewards of an iconic product and brand than the economic rapists of the Hedge Fund Era ever were, and the bakery jobs that will return will be better jobs than those lost when the pirate capitalists went under.

Where did you get that? The monthly unemployment claims statistics? The fact is, puddydope, the economy is adding net 160,000+ jobs a month.
Romney, of course, knew that when he promised 12 million jobs in 4 years. Two-thirds of those are a gimme, no matter who’s in the White House, because the economy will add 8 million jobs over the next 4 years if the administration does absolutely nothing. Romney figured to get the other 4 million by repealing Obamacare, eviscerating the EPA, and allowing union-busting to continue apace. Most of those 4 million jobs would have been minimum-wage service jobs.

Investing Or Gambling?
Macao casino mogul Sheldon Adelson poured $100 million into Romney’s and other Republicans’ campaigns this year. A Romney victory was worth about $2 billion of tax breaks to Adelson over 4 years. That’s a 20-to-1 ROI (return on investment), or about 500% a year. (Compare that to the 1/10 of 1% your bank pays you on your passbook savings.) Not hard to see what Adelson’s motivation was. Only problem is, Romney lost, and Adelson’s “investment” went up in smoke. Still, his wage of $100M against a potential $2B return is probably far better odds than he gives the patrons of his casinos. So he can’t say he was rooked.

I can’t stop giggling at the look of disbelief on that Fox anchor’s face when Obama won Ohio and the election … and Karl Rove’s meltdown was one for the ages … those stupid fucks actually thought Romney was going to win, because they believed their own bullshit about the polls being wrong! That’s like a fish baiting a hook and catching itself!! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Roger Rabbit spews:
Those people live in a bubble. I mean, really, they’re in a make-believe world! Right before the election, a Barron’s editor wrote at least two separate feature-length articles about why the polls were wrong and Romney was gonna win a smashing electoral college victory! It’s all in the data crunching, you see.
“At the moment, Romney looks likely to capture at least 289 and possibly 299 [electoral votes], says John Morgan, who retired a few years back after nearly 30 years as one of the Republican Party’s top election demographers. Obama, he says, has 211 electoral votes in his pocket now, mainly from the East and West coasts, Illinois, and New Mexico. And, as Al Gore learned to his rue in 2000, electoral — not popular — votes determine who resides in the White House.”
Yeah I’m sure Team Obama needed the tutorial on how presidents are elected! As if they didn’t know. But here’s the money quote, farther into the article:
“Morgan says that demographic trends in the counties, not the polls, are the best predictors of an election outcome.”
Yeah right! We know how that worked out!
http://online.barrons.com/arti.....48558.html
That was in August. Then, in late October, McTague tied an even longer rope around his editorial neck:
“Former GOP demographer John Morgan Sr. says Obama’s biggest problem is that the national temperament leans Republican, as evidenced by the 2010 midterm elections, where Republican victories were both widespread and deep. … Political scientists generally discount the predictive power of midterms — and with good reason — but this time may be different.”
http://online.barrons.com/arti.....rticle%3D1
Nope, this time wasn’t different. Those good reasons worked the same as they always do. Hey Jim! You might want to read this book before the next election:
http://www.amazon.com/This-Tim.....+different
After all, you’re editing a financial magazine, so it’s relevant to your work. You might learn something. For example, you might learn that repeating bullshit over and over doesn’t make it come true.

Friday’s Stats: Inflation Tame; Deflation Risk Falls
This economist isn’t a media star, but he has a Ph.D. from Yale and impressive academic credentials that include teaching at Dartmouth and the University of Chicago. Here’s what he says is happening:
“U.S. inflation data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that a two-month spike in headline inflation seems to have run its course. Both headline and core inflation measures are now close to or below the Fed’s 2 percent target. In a related development, the Atlanta Fed reports that deflation probabilities have nosedived since President Obama won re-election earlier this month.
“The headline all-items CPI increased at an annual rate of just 1.81 percent in October, down from 7.48 percent in August and 7.06 percent in September. Most of the decrease came from a drop in energy prices, which had soared in the previous two months. New and used car prices also fell. Increases in the prices of food and apparel partly offset the decreases in energy and vehicles. …
“The BLS core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, increased at a 2.18 annual rate in October. The Cleveland Fed’s 16-percent trimmed mean inflation rate increased at annual rate of 1.69 percent. The trimmed mean measure of underlying inflation excludes the 8 percent of prices that increase the most in a given month and also the 8 percent of prices that increase least (or decrease most), whether they are energy, food, or anything else. …
“Meanwhile, an indicator of deflation probability published by the Atlanta Fed has nosedived since the election. The probability that the CPI on April 15, 2017 will be below its level of April 15, 2012 fell from 11.52 percent the day before the election to 8.81 percent on November 14th. The decrease could be interpreted as indicating that investors believe President Obama will safely steer the economy through the recession risk posed by political gridlock and the fiscal cliff. …
“The fact that expectations of both inflation and deflation are falling suggests growing confidence that monetary and fiscal policymakers will neither plunge the economy into a new depression nor allow an outbreak of inflation. … both the five-year and ten-year expected inflation rates are well below the Fed’s target of 2 percent.”
http://tinyurl.com/c57pewe
Roger Rabbit Commentary: What does this mean? First, it means Tea Partiers and other inflation hawks are detached from reality. Second, temporary spikes in gasoline prices are merely fluctuations, normal for markets, that don’t mean anything over the long haul; a market fluctuation isn’t a trend. Third and finally, the majority of voters knew what they were doing when they re-elected President Obama and, in effect, ratified his economic policies. Romney and the GOP didn’t have an economic policy, only phony rationalizations for giving more tax breaks to their millionaire buddies.
Puddybud spews:
They know all about their father’s blogging and know real well you are an ylbuttspigot idiot! HA’s ylbuttspigot, unemployed moron.
See ya tool!
Roger Rabbit spews:
Here’s another reason why Tea Partiers and wingnuts are wrong and should be ignored.
The Economist, a U.K.-based news/opinion weekly with a politically conservative and pro-business orientation (i.e., these guys are real conservatives), says:
“At stake is not just the future of France, but that of the euro. Mr Hollande has correctly badgered Angela Merkel for pushing austerity too hard. But he has hidden behind his napkin when it comes to the political integration needed to solve the euro crisis. There has to be greater European-level control over national economic policies. … While most countries discuss how much sovereignty they will have to give up, France is resolutely avoiding any debate on the future of Europe.”
http://www.economist.com/news/.....bomb-heart
Now, The Economist happens to be discussing France’s role in the Eurozone crisis, but I’m citing this to make a broader point: The solution to Europe’s economic problems is more, not less, political integration and centralizing, not localizing, sovereignty.
This is the exact opposite of what is advocated by states’ righters, secessionists, and the devolve-everything-to-the-states vocalizers of Republican social and economic policy thinking. (If you can call it “thinking,” which perhaps is too generous.) They’re wrong about austerity, too; their fiscal prescriptions would make our recession worse, not better.
In short, the sign-waving, garbage-lid-pounding, pistol-packing loudmouths that have been driving Republican policy thinking (see above) don’t know what they’re talking about and should be ignored.
And if Republican electeds and leaders don’t start ignoring them, our citizens shouldn’t listen to Republicans or vote for them.
Sometimes this really is a black-and-white world. A stove burner is either hot or cold. If it’s hot and you touch it, you get burned. And when you do, no amount of false rhetoric from empty suits can wish the burn away. Sometimes, some people are right and others are wrong. Sometimes it really is that simple.

I’m glad to see someone in the financial press has figured out why the USA economy isn’t recovering, and won’t ever recover until the rich stop being so greedy:
“[T]he American economy is geared to Joe Sixpack consuming. But Joe is being starved, and yet asked to produce and consume – much like the farmer who does not feed his horse enough but wants it to plow ever increasing areas. The USA economic dynamics are preventing Joe from getting enough income to increase consumption.”
http://seekingalpha.com/articl.....#038;ifp=0
Roger Rabbit Commentary: During the last 30 years, when Republican economy philosophy has ruled our land, the distribution of GDP has reversed from 60% to labor and 40% to capital, to the other way around. It was inevitable this would implode our consumer-based economy. When your employees are your customers, and you lay off workers and cut wages, you’re cutting your own throat. Henry Ford understood that if he paid his workers well, his business would do better. Now we have a whole generation of CEOs, financial manipulators, and conservative politicians who are stupid. Yes, it’s that simple.

OblamerCare is causing companies to reevaluate health care plans. Puddy’s 2013 health care plan has tremendously increased for the same coverage. It’s an additional tax on the common folk per SCOTUS!
