The statement, broadcast Sunday on Up Front with Robert Mak, is even worse in context, coming in the wake of Sea-Tac Airport’s Christmas tree fiasco and the torrent of anti-semitic comments it generated on KING-5 TV’s own blog. So it strikes me as more than a little bit insensitive for a prominent public figure to go on the air and say that the Rabbi deserved the condemnation he was getting, that nobody travels for Hannukah anyway, and that Jews are basically a bunch of greedy merchants who should be satisfied enough to just celebrate their profits.
I don’t get it. Seattle has a reputation for political correctness ad absurdum, and yet this clearly insensitive if not downright anti-semitic comment from a major public figure doesn’t even generate a yawn.
Joe Fuiten is the pastor of our region’s largest mega-church, Bothell’s Cedar Park Church. He is also an influential player in Republican Party politics, a close advisor to Mike McGavick during his failed senate campaign, and a publicity hound who actively seeks to interject himself into controversial political and social issues. Fuiten gets air time exactly because he is perceived to be credible.
So I guess in this town, it must be credible to perpetuate anti-Jewish sentiment in pursuit of one’s political agenda. Huh. Who knew?
More likely, the three people who were listening to the show weren’t journalists!

Perhaps you are the only one still listening to Fulton? Personally, I don’t hear anything he says (or read anything he is quoted as saying) once I determine it is he who is doing the talking. As for the air time, they don’t give it to him because he is creditable, they give it to him because he is entertaining because he says controversial things.
And even Mike McGavick didn’t really listen to his advice, he just wanted Fulton to think he was a valued member of the campaign, so that he could bring out the Evangelical vote. Preachers are often a bit awed when political figures pay attention to them and talk to them nicely, and they can therefore be manipulated rather easily for political purposes.
If McGavick had asked or listened to Fulton, or any other Evangelical preacher, he would have known that he should have promised total abstinance from alchohol after admitting his drunk-driving arrest. But instead, McGavick rather stubbornly insisted that he would continue to drink, and drive, but not drink quite so much when he was driving. Hardly a promise which inspires confidence that the event won’t be repeated again.

Today Bush signed the bill continuing the Federal Income Tax deduction for State Sales Taxes. He also commented that the was in favor of some form of minimum wage increase.

Being an evangelical theologian myself I am appalled at Fuiten’s statement. If anybody should be toting the line for not judging (read Jesus), not being anti-ethnic/gender(read Paul), and not hastily generalizing segments of populations (read a good book on logic), it should be an evangelical minister.
Just because a statement begets laughs it does not necessitate slandering an entire ethnicity. Btw…let’s not forget that Jesus and his followers, including the early Church were considered a Jewish sect. They even perceived themselves as an extension of Judaism meeting and teaching in synagogues.
Whereas I find Goldy’s political leanings to be a bit leftist for me I truly respect Goldy’s ability to voice opinions even if they do grate at me from time to time. Personal assaults are absolutely uncalled for unless you want to own up to your name and email and be man/woman enough.
Fuiten is an embarrassment to good Christians. Any politician who seeks his support lacks both principles and pride. I don’t see too much wrong with someone saying that merchants should pay some homage to religious holidays that create a large portion of their business — regardless of whether the merchant is an adherent of that religion or not. I am sure Christian merchants in Moslem countries give considerable respect to Muslim religious holidays — especially those which tend to be associated with increased business for the merchant.
Pastor Fuiten, however, is obviously wrong when he says that no one travels for Hanukah. Clearly, many Jewish people do — probably nearly a similar number as Christians who travel for Christmas. Maybe a lot of this travel is due to a plethora of secular holidays and leave taking in December, but many Jews still travel for Hanukah, even if a lot of the motivation is secular rather than religious.
To whatever extent Pastor Fuiten may have anti-Jewish feelings, I don’t see the Jewish community as a whole getting outraged. Probably because Fuiten is sympathetic to Jewish issues most of the time. There are a lot more serious threats to Jews than Fuiten — such as Muslim extremists who are virulently anti-Jewish 100% of the time.
That may explain why most of the folks knocking anti-Jewish statements from Pastor Fuiten tend to be people who disagree with Fuiten politically (regardless of their own faith or ethnicity), as opposed to Jewish religious groups. We don’t even see extreme Jewish fundamentalists — such as the ultra-Orthodox Chabad Lubavitch movement — attacking Fuiten.
