Hey gang, how are you doing? I was in Tacoma on Saturday and I went to an anti ICE rally there. Man, there were a lot of cops there. Like, bike cops and cops just standing there. Feels very oppressive compared to Seattle and Suburbia where the police have kept their distance, at protests I’ve been to. Maybe that’s the point but it really is a noticeable contrast.

    Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 27, a former neonatal intensive care nurse in Virginia, has pleaded no contest to nine counts of felony child abuse. The plea deal follows a lengthy investigation into unexplained fractures suffered by newborns at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Under the terms of the agreement, Strotman faces a maximum of three years in prison, with several malicious wounding charges being dropped.

    The investigation began in 2023 after multiple infants were found with broken bones. Evidence presented in court included video footage of Strotman appearing to lean her full body weight onto a crying infant. Other reports alleged she lifted newborns by their heads and used excessive force during routine care. While her defense argued the actions were “perceived as rough” but lacked intent to harm, investigators noted that unexplained injuries ceased during a year-long period when Strotman was placed on administrative leave.

    As part of the resolution, Strotman is permanently barred from practicing nursing or working with minors and vulnerable adults. The hospital also faced scrutiny for failing to report the suspected abuse in a timely manner and for lacking proper documentation of staff interactions in the NICU. Families of the affected children, some of whom suffered the highest level of physical abuse recognized in Virginia, are expected to provide impact statements at the sentencing hearing scheduled for June 5.

    Any reason Senate Majority Leader Thune should pass the bill with the goodies before passing the bill with the DHS funding?

    Orders for long-lasting items such as appliances, aircraft and computers rose more than expected in November, the Commerce Department reported Monday.

    Durable goods demand jumped 5.3% for the month, according to Census Bureau data delayed by the government shutdown. The total reversed a 2.1% decline in October and was better than the 4.5% Dow Jones consensus estimate.

    Excluding defense orders, the number was even better with a 6./6% rise. Excluding transportation, which saw a 14.7% surge, orders still rose 0.5%.

    Didn’t libbies say all the new tariffs would tank the economy?

    Only one I can think of.

    That was Thune’s and Johnson’s commitment to Democratic Leaders ahead of these votes.

    Keeping their word they gave in order to secure the previously agreed upon support of Democratic leaders probably doesn’t mean much to Thune and Johnson. But it will mean a lot to the members whose support those Democratic leaders depend on for their leadership positions.
