  7. Great documentary on what until Florida’s Brightline, was the last Private passenger train in the US, the Rio Grande Zephyr. It was a shock in April of 71, with days before Amtrak assumed responsibility for passenger trains,the Denver and Rio Grande Western, opted out of the Federal, allegedly For Profit(will be watered down within a decade) company and would continue operating the Denver-Salt Lake City Rio Grande Zephyr. The reason was, a daily or more California Zephyr was seen as an impediment to fast freight. They were required to operate the RGZ until 1975, but would end up joining Amtrak in 1983. In that decade, as one by one the other opt outs joined, or in the case of Rock Island, quit altogether, the Rio Grande acted like, as long as they are stuck with the train, and their name is on it, they are operating it well. If it weren’t for a landslide, the transition to Amtrak would have been seamless, Weeks before, a set of Superliners and Amtrak locomotives were lent to Rio Grande to operate on the Zephyr, to make sure they could pass the clearances.

    Also in the video, interesting insight of that early decade of Amtrak, and the cuts of Carter and Reagan. First cut under Secretary of Transportation Brock Adams, only the Floridian is back, debut it if only one more was restored, the North Coast Hiawatha Of the Reagan cuts, the Vancouver run is the only one back.

    The Interstate Commerce Commission was probably glad Amtrak acquired the RGZ, as that was the last passenger train they regulated.
