DLBottleIt’s January 20th, and it’s been one hell of a year. The Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally will be getting together this evening. Because we need a drink!

We meet tonight and every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. You’ll find us in the back room starting about 8:00pm.

    The thought that immediately comes to mind is that if Trump sends U.S. troops to seize Greenland, the Danish and other defenders have every right to shoot at them, but here’s the catch: If we cheer for the victims of this invasion, Trump and his legal thugs might accuse us of treason. You know, aiding and abetting the enemy in time of war.

    In fact, they might apply it retroactively, so notice I said “if” to cover my cute cottontail, although that could still get me arrested because these guys aren’t into nuances of language, freedom of speech, or anything else. So if I disappear immediately after the war starts, assume I’ve been rendered to one of their black sites and tortured.

    Meanwhile, Republicans are showing us what they’re not made of. They’re not impeaching him. They’re not invoking 25th Amendment. Some even support this madness. What Republicans are proving to the world is that if we were in 1930s Germany they would all be Hitler’s useful idiots.

    Well, count me out of that. I’m not giving up my right to criticize the actions of my government, and if Doctor Dumbfuck doesn’t like it, he can pry my keyboard from my cold dead carcass.

    One of the most far-right Catholic archbishops in the entire country just came out against President Donald Trump’s threats to invade Greenland — and urged devout troops to refuse to follow any orders to do so. …

    Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who oversees the archdiocese for the U.S. military, … has backed the right-wing crusade against COVID vaccine mandates in the armed forces, supported Trump’s ban on transgender individuals from military service, and even told servicemembers that the Affordable Care Act undermines the freedoms for which they fought.

    However, … “in a BBC interview this past weekend … Broglio addressed President Donald Trump’s increasingly explicit threats to seize Greenland by force. Broglio’s judgment was unambiguous. Such an operation, he said, could not satisfy the Church’s moral criteria for the use of force. More pointedly, he added that Catholic military personnel would not be morally bound to carry out an order to invade a friendly nation.” …

    Furthermore, he said, if such an invasion happens, Catholic troops could find themselves compelled to engage in actions they find “morally questionable,” and could refuse such orders.

    And if they do go after him, what will SCOTUS’s conservative justices, all Catholics, do with this? Side with Trump or their Church? The Pope should excommunicate them if they hand over one of his Archbishops for the Nazi treatment.

    The idea of a wider European boycott of US bonds appears to have unnerved US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who protested during remarks at the annual World Economic Forum summit in Davos that it “defies any logic” and urged European nations not to “listen to the media who are hysterical.”

    George Saravelos, head of FX research at Deutsche Bank, said if Trump is intent on shredding the long-standing US military alliance with Europe, it can return the favor by backing out of its role as America’s number-one lender, which could trigger heightened inflation, dollar depreciation, and higher interest rates that make borrowing and spending more costly.

    “For all its military and economic strength,” Saravelos wrote, “the US has one key weakness: It relies on others to pay its bills via large external deficits.”

  9. Calls to “rise up” against the tactics Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are using grew louder on Tuesday after a group of Minneapolis-area doctors spoke out about abuses they’ve seen.
