I have been for the idea of reactivating the Waterfront Streetcar in the past, but in as they say after a NFL Replay , upon further review,not so much. Still would like to see better transit for Colman Dock to accommodate more Walk on and POF Traffic, but I don’t want a route that goes in a roundabout way, or contributes to a T3 problem. Specifically serving Seattle Center. I would rather see the proposed line on 1st Ave resumed with a branch all the way to Seattle Center, specifically CPA. I doubt old Metro 99 could have served CPA. First a bridge over the BNSF Scenic Sub at Broad Street would be necessary, and I don’t know how steep the grade on Broad from Western to Denny. Seattles old network had some challenging unassisted grades like E Madison in Madison Valley-Madison Park, and Rt14 on Jackson Street, supposedly the portion the First Hill Streetcar on Jackson Street is 8-9%.
Other reasons I am not sure about Councilmember Straus’s suggestion, is I want any restoration of the Waterfront line to be interlined with the existing system, and because the South Lake Union line saved money by piggybacking on a Portland order, we were stuck with Portland specs, specifically the voltage the motors draw. The Waterfront line definitely benefited from older is better, most old streetcar systems used 600V DC, which just happened to be what the trolleybus system used. Most new streetcar and LRT use 750V DC, and LINK is 1500V DC.
