    QUESTION FOR MR. CYNICAL

Do you think it’s fair to pay 15% on capital gains if a wage earner with the same income is paying 37%? How is that fair? Why should owners of capital get preferential treatment over those who must live by selling their labor?

On capital gains, it should be taxed at ZERO. It’s our fucking money. We live below our means and are able to save. Our savings are used to propel the economy. That’s our “gift” to society; letting others pay us for the use of our money.

RE: your global warming spew, chanting Chi square does not constitute proof. You seem to think you can set the rules of debate and ignore any links provided. How about this excerpt:

That hypothesis was tested by analyzing 928 abstracts, published in refereed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003, and listed in the ISI database with the keywords “climate change” (9).

The 928 papers were divided into six categories: explicit endorsement of the consensus position, evaluation of impacts, mitigation proposals, methods, paleoclimate analysis, and rejection of the consensus position. Of all the papers, 75% fell into the first three categories, either explicitly or implicitly accepting the consensus view; 25% dealt with methods or paleoclimate, taking no position on current anthropogenic climate change. Remarkably, none of the papers disagreed with the consensus position.

    From Science Magazine http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/...../5702/1686

I’m sure one of them used a statistical method to your liking. Until you’re reviewed all 928, we can ignore you.

“How the fuck is it ‘moral’ to tax the Producers at high rates while the Takers get a free ride?” Commentby Mark The Redneck— 5/30/06@ 7:32 pm

That’s my whole point, Redneck. Workers produce everything. The owners of capital do nothing except boss workers around and take profits from what the workers produce.

The lazy owners of capital, who do not work, demand preferential status with respect to wealth, position in society, taxation, political power, etc. They claim to be entitled to this because they “take risks.” What risks? Show me a capitalist, and I’ll show you somebody who gets corporate welfare and government bailouts. Capitalists don’t take risks! Their whole fucking aim is to avoid risks, preferably by passing as many risks as possible to others — namely taxpayers, shareholders, customers, etc.

    They want tort immunity.
They want workers to pay all the taxes.
They want taxpayers to clean up their industrial pollution.
They want government to pay for their workers’ health care.
They want shareholders to bear all the losses.
They want bankruptcy courts to bail them out of labor contracts and pension obligations.
They want government to bail them out of business losses.
    They want subsidies.
    They want government contracts.
They want tax credits, depreciation, depletion, tax deferral, preferential taxation, no taxation.

A “capitalist” is someone who makes other people take all the risks, bear all the costs, and takes all the profits for himself. And the whole fucking point of being a capitalist is so you can be a lazy ass who does no work and produces nothing.

Does that answer your question, Redneck?

The return on investment for trailer park Republicans hasn’t been quite so rosy. In exchange for voting Republican, they get their sons in government-issued metal caskets, they get their jobs shipped to other countries, they get inflation and unemployment, they get higher interest rates and higher future taxes, they lose their health care, and generally get shit on by the people they voted for. Don’t feel sorry for them. They asked for it.

This is what I’ll say about the atrocity incident in Iraq.

Atrocities occur in all wars, usually as a result of combat-stressed troops breaking under accumulated strain. That is what happened at My Lai, and apparently is what happened at Haditha.

The U.S. Marines are justly proud of their service, history, and traditions. Anyone who knows even a little about what the Marines did — and endured — in the island invasions of World War II, at Chosin Reservoir in Korea, and in the jungles of Vietnam has got to admire their fighting prowess, tenacity, and bravery.

What a small group of USMC personnel allegedly did at Habitha is not representative of the Corps or U.S. military forces in general. It is an aberration; a breakdown of discipline; a disregard of training; a departure from everything the Corps stands for. The Marines have earned the right to call themselves “liberators” in countless engagements.

We liberals, as patriotic Americans, should not judge the U.S. military personnel in Iraq or the Marine Corps by this incident.

It is right for us to expect and demand accountability. It is right for us to expect the military justice system to work as intended and designed. Those who committed the atrocity have dishonored the Corps and their country, and do not belong in the Marine Corps, but the meting out of justice to them must be tempered by knowledge of what they were asked to do, and what the daily ambushes by unseen enemies inevitably must do to a fighting unit’s morale and discipline. Farther up the chain of command, their should be no mercy for officers involved in efforts to cover up the incident, block investigation, or obstruct justice. We cannot entrust the command of troops who hold the power of life and death over innocent civilians in their hands to such men. They are unfit to be Marines, and should be drummed out of the Corps.

My liberal friends, let us remember, as the investigation and prosecution of this (and any other) atrocity incident unfolds, that 99% of our troops serving in Iraq are brave and honorable soldiers who deserve our respect and admiration, and who do not deserve to be judged by the bad judgment and discipline failures of the other 1%.

This figure is not fully accurate. The latest data from the Dept. of Homeland Security shows that the wealthy pay 98.264 percent of the tax burden. This is even after the implementation of the George W. Bush Administration’s first phase of tax-relief legislation.

This hugely unfair burden is why the Republican National Committee supports the immediate approval of Phase Two of the Bush Administration’s proposed tax reform package currently before Congress. Without passage of the full package, our economic sustainability is in doubt.

Roger – I ran your figures through Turbo Tax (2005). With two exemtions (married and filing jointly) one would have to had made over $9 million dollars in wage income to have paid 36+% in taxes. The 15% wage rate is about $105K. So what is your arguement as your original statement is pure nonsense.

(“Do you think it’s fair to pay 15% on capital gains if a wage earner with the same income is paying 37%? How is that fair? Why should owners of capital get preferential treatment over those who must live by selling their labor?”)

If I made $9M a year in wages I would love to invest a lot of it to get a lower tax rate. If I made $100K a year, I would love to invest the max in I could in a IRA and any discretionary income in the market. If I made $50K a year I would invest as much as I could afford in my IRA.

Congress has built in incentives in the tax code to encourage investment as that helps the economy and the investor. Are you suggesting that that incentive is wrong? If so and you were a member of Congress, how would you fix it? Do you totally want to kill all investment in the United States by taxing Investments at 40%?

It’s not quite that simple, Art, although you do make an important point; to wit, politicians should KNOW what happens in wars, and should KNOW that when they decide to lead their nations to war, those things are GOING to happen.

Although a nation’s leaders bear ultimate responsibility for their decisions on matters of war and peace, that does not exonerate soldiers from their responsibility for breakdowns of military discipline.

These guys know what the rules are, and — if the allegations are true — they knew damn well they were breaking them. Nothing in their training or orders gave them any basis to think they had any permission or authority to randomly select unarmed civilians and kill them in revenge for casualties they suffered at the hands of armed adversaries. No one ever gave them any reason to believe they were authorized to deliberately shoot babies and chidren. In any place, at any time, under any circumstances, that is murder. Pure and simple. And individuals who commit murder are accountable to society and humanity for their criminal acts — we established and enforced that principle at Nuremberg. If the allegations are true, there should be no free pass for the Marines who did the unauthorized and illegal shooting.

Well the producers pay most of the taxes. The top 50% of wage earners pay over 96% of the taxes…see:

    Only The Rich Pay Taxes

Top 50% of Wage Earners Pay 96.03% of Income Taxes

    October 10, 2003

There is new data for 2001. The share of total income taxes paid by the top 1% fell to 33.89% from 37.42% in 2000. This is mainly because their income share (not just wages) fell from 20.81% to 17.53%. However, their average tax rate actually rose slightly from 27.45% to 27.50%.

*Data covers calendar year 2001, not fiscal year 2001 – and includes all income, not just wages, excluding Social Security

This proves that it was not the tax cut that caused revenues from the rich to fall, but the recession and the stock market crash. In other words, you live by the sword, you die by the sword. If you are going to benefit from the rich paying more taxes, due to progressivity, on the upside, you are going to lose more revenue from these people on the downside. This is a good argument for reducing progressivity.

Think of it this way: less than four dollars out of every $100 paid in income taxes in the United States is paid by someone in the bottom 50% of wage earners. Are the top half millionaires? Noooo, more like “thousandaires.” The top 50% were those individuals or couples filing jointly who earned $26,000 and up in 1999. (The top 1% earned $293,000-plus.) Americans who want to are continuing to improve their lives – and those who don’t want to, aren’t. Here are the wage earners in each category and the percentages they pay:

Top 5% pay 53.25% of all income taxes (Down from 2000 figure: 56.47%). The top 10% pay 64.89% (Down from 2000 figure: 67.33%). The top 25% pay 82.9% (Down from 2000 figure: 84.01%). The top 50% pay 96.03% (Down from 2000 figure: 96.09%). The bottom 50%? They pay a paltry 3.97% of all income taxes. The top 1% is paying more than ten times the federal income taxes than the bottom 50%! And who earns what? The top 1% earns 17.53 (2000: 20.81%) of all income. The top 5% earns 31.99 (2000: 35.30%). The top 10% earns 43.11% (2000: 46.01%); the top 25% earns 65.23% (2000: 67.15%), and the top 50% earns 86.19% (2000: 87.01%) of all the income.

They may have been in the top 50%, but they were not wealthy by any means. The 96% figure gets whittled down a lot with even the most cursory examination of your numbers and the actual social facts behind them.

So, I am left to wonder if you are really that stupid or if you have ulterior motives for presenting the 96% figure when a simple examination of your own information puts the lie to your assertion.

At least not in the first degree. For one it was not premeditated. Second, their psychological state has to be taken into account due to the accumulated battle fatigue you mentioned.

The latter is most critical. To avoid the diatribe answer as to why it is happening, simply put: George W. Bush did not execute a comprehensive war plan. He failed to plan for post combat operations beyond ordinary Iraqi citizens electing their leaders. That is NOT democracy. What George W. Bush fails to realize to this very day is that democracy will not and cannot flourish in the midst of pure chaos.

    Our military is designed for:
    Blowing things up.
    Killing adversaries.

    Our military is not for:
    Police actions.
    Peace keeping.

The effective military option expired within 2 weeks after the fall of Baghdad. The ensuing chaos, rioting, looting, and rising insurgency is proof positive that George W. Bush lacks the mental fortitude to understand the obvious outcome that his father predicted in his book.

““Trying to eliminate Saddam .. would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible … We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq …there was no viable “exit strategy” we could see, violating another of our principles. Furthermore, we had been self-consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-Cold War world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations’ mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land.“

“. . . an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land.”

That’s why they are under such heavy stress. The AWOL from the TANG CinC just doesn’t get real sacrifice.

Folks your worst fears are taking place someone is starting a new war and they did not ask you for permission.

Iran’s military plans for invasion by U.S.
    By Iason Athanasiadis
    THE WASHINGTON TIMES
    May 31, 2006
TEHRAN — Iran, apparently anticipating an American invasion, has quietly been restructuring its military and testing a new military doctrine that calls for a decentralized, Iraqi-style guerrilla campaign against an invading force.
Iran’s military planners are acutely aware that a military confrontation with technologically more advanced U.S. armed forces would be rapid and multifronted, unlike the static and slow-paced 1980-88 war with Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.
Therefore, a series of war games have been carried out since late last year to test the army’s readiness.
In December, more than 15,000 members of the regular armed forces participated in an exercise in northwestern Iran’s strategically sensitive Azerbaijan border provinces that focused on irregular warfare carried out by highly mobile army units, according to the official MENA news agency.
A second exercise was conducted in the majority-Arab province of Khuzestan in September, according to the Iranian press, aimed at quelling insurgencies in areas subject to ethnic unrest and prone to foreign influence.
Involving a reported 100,000 troops, the exercise provided an example of how the Islamic Republic would respond to further disturbances in the strategic, oil-rich province that has been the scene of a year-old terrorist bombing campaign.
Iranian officials, including the interior and the intelligence ministers, as well as several religious leaders, have repeatedly blamed the disturbances on British forces occupying nearby southern Iraq.

I think the main point I want to make about the Habitha incident is that we liberals are not going to suddenly get stupid and take out our frustrations with Bush’s misbegotten war on the troops he sent it fight it, no matter how much the righties might wish we would.

You know that traitor Rove has already planned on putting “rouge” war protesters at peace rallies to protest against the troops. That way they can wag their fingers and say “see, those liberals hate the troops.”

Everyone should be taxed equally, plain and simple. Flat tax is the only fair way to go. xx% is still xx%, whether it’s xx% of $20,000 or xx% of $500,000. If the government takes all your money away when you work hard to earn it then there’s little incentive to work hard to get ahead, and poof! there goes one of the basic tenets of capitalism. Oh, but that’s right, you all would love to live in a socialist wonderland if you could, despite the fact that it’s well-proven that no socialist economy has ever worked in the history of humanity. Ever. Never ever.

Capitalism has significant flaws, no doubt about it, but no matter how bad or unfair you think it is, it’s much worse elsewhere. And you know what, LIFE ISN’T FAIR and some people really do get the short end of the stick. That’s REALITY folks, and it’s not my responsiblity to pay for all those schmucks who have no desire or drive to better themselves.
