  98. Regarding the “sex offender” mailing.

    Part of the Republican “Lies & Smears” campaign that Karl Rove has perfected so well over the past twenty years or so. He knows Republicans will lose a rational debate on the issues regarding domestic issues such as social security, disaster response, budget deficits, no-bid contracts, etc., so instead he tries to distract the voters by deamonizing the opposition.

    The recent “sex offender is living in your district” ad is an example of that type of tactic – somehow trying to tie, in voter’s minds, Democrats with sex offenders, and Republicans as the “protectors”.

    But just this past year I was sorry to hear that a family I consider my “step-family” had one of their sons convicted of a sex offense. I won’t go into the details, as there is some doubt as to his guilt, but his degree of inebriation during the night in question really makes it difficult for him to respond to the allegations. The bad news (for him and his family) is that he plead guilty to avoid the financial hardship on his family, is now in work-release, and will be tagged as a “sex offender” for the rest of his life. The good news is that he finally got treatment for alchoholism.

    Another Democratic sex offender? Hardly, He and his family are lifelong Republicans, big fans of Rush Limbaugh and the NRA. They remain among the 29% who still think Bush is doing a great job. They were crushed when I reminded them that if he was going to live in their house when he was released, they had to get rid of all their guns (it’s a pretty impressive arsenal). He may not be allowed to live at home due to the number of children that live nearby. They think this is patently unfair, as he really isn’t the “danger to the community” posed by all the “other sex offenders”.

    So does this mean that Republicans are sex offenders? Hardly. Sex-offense crimes are not partison issues. Attempts to create it as such, just like “Sheriff Dave’s” recent campaign to “protect the suburbs from street gangs”, is just another “Willie Horton” campaign tactic. I hope the average voter is smarter than this.

Sure there have been Democrats who have committed similar despicable acts, but never on such a wide scale level as is currently going on in D.C.

  111. I agree that congress is off the deep end of spending. A lone voice in coburn from Oklahoma is fighting a valiant battle against earmarks, and the corruption they represent. What is interesting is that the dems are lined up against him, and with the big spending repubs. The dems want to preserve their right to spend in secret just as much as the old bulls of the repub party.

    That is why the polls are deceptive. Two thirds of the nation might not think bush or congress are doing a good job. That doesn’t mean they all want the dems. They want to go in the other direction, toward more freedom and smaller govt. The dems don’t offer that. Probably these disenchanted will just stay home, serving up victory to the dems.

    1) We have a volunteer military. They are doing an outstanding job. I don’t have children who qualify for the military. So why do you keep saying this?

    3) A woman who spends years getting pregnant, and then willingly takes a job that takes her away from the child during the most important years of that child’s life, is in my mind of questionable values.
