Rumsfeld’s latest effort at backtracking on his prewar statements came Thursday at a contentious public forum in Atlanta when he faced a handful of hecklers and an anti-war questioner in the audience, who charged that he had lied about Saddam having weapons of mass destruction, which was President Bush’s chief rationale for invading the country and starting the war.
The Pentagon chief denied he had lied and said he had relied on official intelligence reports about Saddam’s weapons.
His questioner persisted: “You said you knew where they were.”
Rumsfeld: “I did not. I said I knew where ‘suspect’ sites were.”

Bush Advises Graduates on Technology
STILLWATER, Okla., May. 7, 2006
AP) President Bush advised college graduates on Saturday to use technology but not become enslaved by it.
“Science offers the prospect of eventual cures for terrible diseases _ and temptations to manipulate life and violate human dignity,” Bush said during commencement exercises at Oklahoma State University. “With the Internet, you can communicate instantly with someone halfway across the world _ and isolate yourself from your family and your neighbors.”
The nation’s young generation will wrestle to resolve these dilemmas, he said.
“My advice: Harness the promise of technology without becoming slaves to technology. My advice is that science serves the cause of humanity and not the other way around,” the president said.
After the speech, some graduates said they couldn’t make out clearly what Bush said because of an echo in the audio system at Boone Pickens Stadium.
“I couldn’t really hear it because the sound was so bad,” said Michelle Ward, who earned a degree in biomedical sciences.
Bush highlighted recent economic gains and told the graduates that an improving job market is giving them more job opportunities
The only people still supporting Bush are those who favor a monarchy. Representative democracy is just too messy for them; they want stay-the-course policies, and too many policymakers can fuck that up. I don’t wish anyone ill, except our nation’s enemies. It’s a good thing that Patrick Kennedy is going back into rehab. But I am very angry.
For nearly three years we witnessed the persecution of Rush Limbaugh, who became addicted to painkillers resulting from back and neck problems. We witnessed leaks by prosecutors who spread lies about him being involved in money laundering, drug rings, and doctor shopping. But the media happily repeated them. Some mocked him.
Rush got help. He has been clean for years. And in most cases, when someone becomes addicted to prescription drugs for the first time, the matter is eventually dropped. Most jurisdictions have set up drug courts for this very purpose. But that didn’t stop the state prosecutor in Palm Beach County from spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars pursuing Rush.
Early on, prosecutors claimed they had evidence of over ten felonies. They demanded that Rush plead guilty to some felony—any felony. He refused, always insisting on his innocence. So, they leaked more lies to the media, hoping to intimidate him. They seized his medical records. They gave his medical records to the media. The media took those records and turned them into graphics for television. Reporters and commentators were studying his prescriptions, discussing both the kinds and amount of medicine he had taken. They were beside themselves with glee. Newsweek, AP and the Palm Beach Post, Rush’s local paper, were especially vicious, serving as lap-dogs for the prosecutors.
In court, Rush fought these people every step of the way—all the way to the Florida Supreme Court. He spent millions of dollars defending himself—despite the fact that he had been a first-time abuser, went to rehab, and was clean. And then last October, the lead prosecutor sauntered into court and in response to questioning told the judge—we have no evidence that Rush Limbaugh has committed any crime! None.
So, I am very angry. You will hear commentator after commentator speaking sympathetically about Patrick Kennedy and his addiction to painkillers. You will hear people say that he is addicted, he has a serious health problem, he deserves to be praised for his forthrightness today, and we should leave him alone. And many of these commentators will be the same people who were giddy in their ceaseless attacks on Rush.
I am angry at the double standard, where liberals are regularly treated one way and conservatives another. I am also glad Patrick Kennedy won’t be abused as Rush was. But you can be sure that the next conservative with a problem won’t be treated like Kennedy.
But there are some aspects to the Kennedy matter that require answers. If Patrick Kennedy, who is not a first offender, is addicted to painkillers, from where did he get them? And there are news reports that he had been drinking earlier at a Capitol Hill bar and alcohol was later smelled on his breath. So, why was the officer on the scene prevented by more senior police officers from performing a routine sobriety test?
I truly wish Patrick Kennedy well. But you bet I’m angry.

I have to say that I feel encouraged by polling results that indicate a growing number of REPUBLICAN CONSERVATIVES have had it with Bush. We liberals can have honest differences of opinion with conservatives, as long as they latter remain true to the Constitution, democratic principles, and their stated beliefs in fiscal responsibility, limited government, and true patriotism. If they show a willingness to turn their backs on a liar and charlatan who calls himself a “conservative” but is nothing more than a con man — if they can admit their error in supporting this usurper and pretender — then we can do business with them.

Redneck, typical Republican that he is, can’t even think of a good torture for Hitler and his ex-wife. (Redneck is referring to HIS ex-wife, not Hitler’s wife, although I suspect they were both married to the same woman.) All he can come up with is throwing ’em into a vat of sulfuric acid. That’s been done before, and lacks imagination, and is fairly mild as far as real suffering goes.
As all of you know, God loves furry little creatures. That’s why She made so many of them! Being one of God’s favorites, I can talk to Her, and here’s what I suggested for Redneck when his Time Comes.
Mark the Redneck dies and goes to Hell for his many sins, including not paying his gambling debts. Satan explains Hell is divided into three compartments, and Mark will have to spend eternity in one of them, but he can choose which compartment he will serve his time in.
Satan opens the door the first compartment. Mark sees a bunch of souls rolling heavy boulders up a steep incline. They groan under the strain, sweat like pigs, and are constantly lashed by demons with whips. When they get to the top, they push the boulders off a precipice, are thrown off the precipice by demons, and have to start all over rolling the boulders up the incline again. They are given no rest.
“Doesn’t look like much fun,” Mark muses. Satan replies, “This is Hell, idiot! It isn’t supposed to be fun. Do you want to see the second compartment?”

No real double standard. Rush was always entitled to diversion, he just needed to admit he had a problem and admit his guilt. Deferred prosecutions require those steps. Rush himself drug this out, blaming everyone else for his problems – his doctors, his maid, the prosecutors. He talked his maid into participating, and when he was caught he tried to leave her holding the bag. It was okay for her to go to jail for participating in his crime, but not him!
Secondly, Rush has, before this problem was made public, been one of the loudest proponants of “lock ’em up” for all drug addicts. It’s all about self-control, right? People who cannot exercise self-control to avoid drug addiction and committing related crimes should all go to jail for a long time, right? Rush’s hypocracy shown through in spades here. If he had offered to be sentenced in the manner he had himself proposed for other drug addicts, then I might have been impressed. Instead, he took the very option of deferred prosecution that he railed against as being “soft” on drug addicts. That is the real hypocracy and double-standard at work here.
I’m sure a fly on the wall at Rush’s hearing would tell us Rush told the judge, “This is Clinton’s fault!”
