So… “Lobbyist Mike” McGavick says he’ll balance the budget by cutting taxes, and he promises never, ever to raise taxes under any circumstances whatsoever, regardless of national emergency or unexpected crisis or anything, anything at all!

Uh-huh. Sure. I guess that’s his idea of responsible governance.

Almost worked — Goldy tell us more about the Slade connection. Slade in NOT liked in the Blue counties. Good card to keep Dems tracking on the goal…….all Gordon ever lacked were fangs.

Slade has a gay son, Todd, that he never put on his campaign literature. Ye, campaign lit with no Todd in phots or mention, just the girls. Gordon admitted the fact years ago on a radio show in Yakima under direct questioning — now that is a model dad.

Let’s talk more about a Slade clone coming down the track. Son of Slade.

Didn’t you guys learn anything from Reagan? Did you have your heads up your horsesass the whole time? If you recall, Reagan cut tax RATES significantly, and during his watch fed gummint revenue nearly DOUBLED. Combine that with getting a handle on social spending and you got a balanced budget. FWIW, I agree with the HAs here for criticizing GWB for not cutting social spending to get a balanced budget.

  13. Green Thumb spews:

    Tuesday, 4/18/06 at 7:26 pm

MTR, with all of your fancy degrees and suitably arrogant demeanor I assume you learned actual economic policy history.

You know that Reagan didn’t balance the budget — he racked up what at the time were far and away the largest budget deficits, as a percentage of GNP, in the country’s history. The budget wasn’t balanced until well into the Clinton administration. Note that this occurred despite tax increases under both Clinton and Bush I.

You know these things. They are incredibly basic. Yet you can’t seem to help from lying. Why is that?

  14. Mark The Redneck spews:

Read what I wrote you fucking idiot. I said REVENUE nearly doubled. The DEFICIT went up because the democrats in congress FAILED to hold up their end of the deal with 3:2 spending cuts.

Do you remember the term DOA smartfuckingass? When Reagan presented budgets?

So go peddle your swill elsewhere. Doesn’t work here with MTR.

    Mary the Redneck @ 12

Okay, can you actually do math?

Reagan was a Keynesian, although he lied about it. He borrowed and spent on an unprecedented scale. He simply added a new, irresponsible ripple: lower taxes irresponsibly.

He was saved by Volker who, of course, he fought. The tremendous rise in interest rates created unprecedented rewards for investment, overcame fears of inflation, created a near-term recession and then a bull market in bonds that lasted basically until a couple years ago.

Other than all those things, your fantasy definition of what Reagan did is, well, uninformed at best.

Re 12: Reagan had the highest tax hike in history — through the back door. He DOUBLED SOCIAL SECURITY WITHHOLDING and spent it on what he wanted — all of it. This 300 billion dollar off-the-books shot in the arm made Reagan’s numbers better than they actually were. Taxes revenue ALWAYS increase. That’s a historical trend. Look it up.

But tax revenues increased, %-wise, less under Reagan than any other previous president.

    Green Thumb,

You have to pardon Mary the Redneck. Now that the Bush administration has made it completely obvious that Reagan and Bush Jr. are using simple Keynesian economics their panties are all in a bunch.

You see, they need the Magic Laffer Curve (not even the real one will do). Using Magic Laffer economics you find that as taxes approach ZERO tax revenues actually approach INFINITY!!!!

It’s not economics, of course. It’s alchemy.

You say you have four degrees. Do you have a doctorate in an economics-related field?

I don’t believe you do, because even the more ideological scholars (of both the left and right) do a much more sophisticated job of grounding their arguments in facts. Your tendency is to shoot from the hip factually and then try to cover it up with bluster (e.g., overheated name calling).

For all of your bullying rhetoric, you dodged my basic point: The budget was balanced by a Democratic president, with the helpful assist of a moderate Republican president. In your ideological zealousness you will likely refuse to acknowledge this, but a host of credible, mainstream economists have argued that the tax increases of Clinton and Bush I laid the foundation for balancing the budget.

You can’t challenge that, because what I have said is grounded in pretty basic facts that any economist who isn’t blinded by ideology would agree with.

It’s funny how you can call someone a dumbass when you still didn’t address my point: Welfare even at its peak represented a tiny percentage of the federal budget. Even if Republicans had achieved their wet dream of eliminating it altogether that would have made very little difference in federal spending.

When you get all riled up about welfare that isn’t because of its cost — it’s because of your values. If you were making an honest argument you would acknowlege this. Instead you play the politics of obfuscation. How do you expect folks to take you seriously when you do this?

  50. Hillary [JCH]Clinton spews:

    Tuesday, 4/18/06 at 9:09 pm

Now we have crude oil up at over $70 a barrel. Gas prices have gone up about 10 cents in the last week. If you’re driving a car that gets 15 miles per gallon that means that you’re spending less than three-fourths of one penny more for every mile you drive. If you have a 15 mile commute to work, this 10 cent rise in gas prices is costing you 20 cents a day. Wow! I can see why you’re so upset!

With these gas prices going up politicians are seeing another golden opportunity to demagogue the oil companies. Hitler blamed the Jews. Demagogue politicians blame the oil companies. They know they’re blowing smoke, but they also know that the average American was educated in government schools and is simply too ignorant to understand the truth about gas prices and oil company profits.

Most government school graduates can’t even so much as explain the difference between a profit and a profit margin. Let’s say that you’re selling a widget for $10 and you’re making a 10% profit. Your profit is $1.00. Your profit margin is 10%. Now let’s say that your costs go up by $9 a widget. So, you double the price at the widget store. Now widgets are selling for $20. Your costs are $18 per widget, so you’re making $2.00 on every sale. Your profit has doubled to $2.00 per widget, but your profit margin is still 10%. You’re still making the same profit on every dollar that you invest in your business, but your profits have doubled! So … as surely as wet streets follow rain … along comes the politician to demagogue you for doubling your profits. He starts to talk about a windfall profits tax to take that extra dollar away from you. Oh, to be sure, he knows what the real story is here — but he also knows that his poorly educated constituents don’t know. The playing field is set for some grandstanding and pandering … and our politico is off to the races!

Sometimes it makes you wonder what the real purpose of our hideous government school system is. Are those schools there to educate Americans to the greatest extent possible? Or are those schools there to educate people just to the point that they can become good little servants of our increasingly-powerful Imperial Federal Government?

Although without Social Security and its surplus the Budget Deficit would be much worse, we are stopping the entire program because Rufus says so. We are also hereby reversing Bush Administration policy and radically decreasing Domestic Discretionary Spending, which the President and Republican Congress have increased faster than President Johnson and the Great Society program. Yes, compared to Johnson, Bush’s spending spree has produced nothing and most of the money has gone to waste and people who don’t need it. Still, we know you are all going to be pretty upset when we take that 300 Billion or so out of the budget. Still, we have to do what RUFUS says. Swimmer, Carter didn’t print too much money — the Federal Reserve was the key player there. Indeed, Carter generated antipathy from Democrats in Congress (and a challenge by Ted Kennedy in the primaries) because he championed cuts in federal spending.

Carter also selected Paul Volcker — a rather zealous fiscal conservative — to head the Fed. That proved to be Carter’s undoing, because Volcker pushed interest rates to dangerously high levels, thereby plunging the economy into a deep recession.

It isn’t fair to blame Carter for the stagflation of the 1970s.

Let’s revue the economic genius of the Republi-trolls:

Mary the Redneck told us, quite correctly, that interest rates peaked during the Administration of the “worst President of the 10th Century”. Since Rates peaked in ’81, when Ronald Reagan was President, that is true. Except Mary thought it was Carter. Ah well, close.

Then he pointed out that during a time of unprecedented deficit spending we should expect tax revenues to go up. Of course this is well known. Of course he thinks it was all due to lowering taxes, because of the Magic Laffer Curve where when taxes go to zero, revenues go to infinity. Nobody names Laffer actually ever had this theory, but it is funny.

Rufus tells us that 300-400 Billion = 1.5 Trillion, but that’s pretty much whatwe’ve come to expect from him.

JCH, tells us that it’s all the Democrats’ fault that oil is expensive. Iraq, Iran and the deluge of instability that Bush has created apparently mean nothing. Okay, obviously all the oil traders are concerned with Iran, but JCH lives in a weird alternate reality.

If you think this is all really strange, welcome to the world of Republican economics.

And Regan reappointed Paul Volcker who served until 1987. He was an inflation hawk. And that is why the interest rates were raised during the Carter Administration.

Remember the “WIN” buttons during the Ford administration?

That stood for “WIP Inflation Now”

Ford had slogans. Carter had solutions.

Reagan reaped the rewards of Carter’s good sense.

Actually Green thumb it was Volker under Reagan who got us out of high inflation by adopting the monetarist approach of keeping the money supply stable. This caused the recession of 82/83. Reagan combated the recession through deregulation and a series of tax policies (ACRS). The combination of lower stable interest rates, tax cuts for capital expenditures (ACRS) and deregulation set the stage for the economic boom from late 84 through early 2000.

Looks like Teddie and Alaska have meddled where they don’t belong once too many times. This should make Goldy feel good.

From the Letters to the Editor in the PI today…
We don’t want Alaska senator in charge of us

Before Ted Stevens’ visit to Seattle, I was determined to vote against Sen. Maria Cantwell because of her support of this ridiculous Iraq war.
Now Stevens has come here and wants to control Washington state affairs. That did it: I’m voting for Cantwell. I don’t want Stevens to get the idea he controls our state. If Mike McGavick gets elected, he will owe Stevens big time. Who wants that?

    To Swimmer at 61:

Gee, why is it Republicans can’t seem to keep the cause and effect straight?

Clinton didn’t start the modern cycle of inflation. It’s roots lie in the late 1960’s, when we tried to do three things at once: fund the Vietnam war, start the Great Society program, and win the Space Race, all without raising taxes. In fact, taxes had already been reduced from their highest rates. (Reagan’s rants against taxes were based on his memories of the high post-WWII tax rates he had to pay as an actor, although those taxes had been reduced long before he took office). The mistake of Johnson AND NIXON

DANG – HIT THE WRONG BUTTON. to continue:

the mistake of Johnson AND NIXON was that they didn’t RAISE TAXES to pay for the war effort, because they felt it would be too unpopular and would increase the calls to bring the soldiers home from Vietnam. Thus: Inflation.

Remember the WIN buttons from the Ford Administration? (Whip Inflation Now). He thought if the unions didn’t ask for wage increases to keep up with inflation, it would stop inflation. Didn’t work.

So Carter inherits an infationary economy, at the same time as the military is being re-organized from the bottom up, and we are paying for the cost of the Vietnam war but the space race and immediate Vietnam War spending is over, so there are recessionary pressures. Inflation continues to rise, mostly because of the increase in oil prices due to the Arab oil embargo, but not because of Clinton’s spending. In fact, Clinton cut the overhead to the point that even the Reagan administration later complained. Clinton charged guests at the white house for the cost of breakfast served at meetings. When Stockman became budget director, the first thing he complained about was how dirty the offices were, because cleaning services had been cut back to once a month. Republicans even campained against Clinton for cancelling the B1 project, even though they knew from intelligence briefings that the Stealth project was making the B1 obsolete before it was even built.

So Clinton gets a bad rap from the Republicans as having caused the problem, but he was the one who took the political heat for making the cuts which would have resulted in a second-term economic recovery, if he had been re-elected.

Instead, the Republicans (who campaigned hard on reducing the deficit and fiscal responsibility) cut taxes and actually increased spending overall. At its high point one-fourth of the federal budget was going toward interest payments on debt, much of it to foreign investors purchasing our treasury certificates at 10%+ interest rates.

Yet Reagan takes credit for the recovery, but Bush I and Clinton had to pay for it with tax increases.

If I borrow enough money and count it as revenue, I can look like I’m doing pretty well too. I guess I can let my kids pay for it later?

In your 3rd and 4th paragraps above, you meant to say “Carter” rather than “Clinton”, am I right?

Federal Income Tax cuts during times of deficits aren’t tax cuts at all – they are merely cowardly tax deferments to future generations who currently have no say in the matter.
