    Retired Hawaiian auto dealer, developer, and freedom fighter James Pflueger was fined $500,000 but given no jail time by a Hawaiian court last year for violating environmental laws and land use regulations.

    Last week, he settled a lawsuit by neighboring property owners and environmental groups for $7.8 million, bringing his out of pocket costs for despoiling a section of the small Hawaiian island located less than a mile from a wildlife refuge to over $12 million. Hey — easy come, easy go!

    According to the Honolulu Star Bulletin, “The secluded area on the northeast coast of Kauai is less then a mile from the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and was the site of pristine coral reefs with some colonies more than 100 years old.

    ” … The settlement is the largest storm-water settlement in the country for violations at a single site by a single landowner, said Wayne Nastri, regional administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which enforces the Clean Water Act. The costs announced yesterday are in addition to state fines of $4 million for environmental damage, state criminal penalties of $500,000 and Kauai County fines of $3,075.

    I’M trying. I’ve been trying all week. The other day, I drove another 30 miles or so on the streets and alleys of Baghdad. I’m looking for the civil war that The New York Times declared. And I just can’t find it.
    Maybe actually being on the ground in Iraq prevents me from seeing it. Perhaps the view’s clearer from Manhattan. It could be that my background as an intelligence officer didn’t give me the right skills.
    And riding around with the U.S. Army, looking at things first-hand, is certainly a technique to which The New York Times wouldn’t stoop in such an hour of crisis.
    Let me tell you what I saw anyway. Rolling with the “instant Infantry” gunners of the 1st Platoon of Bravo Battery, 4-320 Field Artillery, I saw children and teenagers in a Shia slum jumping up and down and cheering our troops as they drove by. Cheering our troops.
    All day – and it was a long day – we drove through Shia and Sunni neighborhoods. Everywhere, the reception was warm. No violence. None.
    And no hostility toward our troops. Iraqis went out of their way to tell us we were welcome.
    Instead of a civil war, something very different happened because of the bombing of the Golden Mosque in Samarra. The fanatic attempt to stir up Sunni-vs.-Shia strife, and the subsequent spate of violent attacks, caused popular support for the U.S. presence to spike upward.

    Well, Roger, if I’m supposed to be labled a chickenshit for not showing up (along with those other guys you called chickenshit earlier) at DL last evening, and YOU DON’T GO to DL either, then you’re a chickenshit, too. That’s why it’s my business, and that’s why I care. If you’re going to call me a chickenshit for not doing something, and you don’t do this same activity,you’re a chickenshit by your own definition.

    As for the other guys, I could care less whether you call them chickenshit or not. Just don’t lump me in with those guys. I know none of them.
