U-S-A! U-S-A!

by Goldy — Wednesday, 6/23/10, 9:23 am

The United States advances to the second round of the World Cup tournament with a 1-0 victory over Algeria, after dramatically scoring their second goal of the match in the 91st minute of, um, a 90 minute game. Go figure.

Is anybody else annoyed by the fact that the English “National Anthem,” ‘God Save the Queen(King)’ is sung to the tune of ‘My Country Tis of Thee?’ How dare those English! While we’re on the subject, what the hell does “tis of thee” mean anyway?

To the subject at hand, they were very fortunate to score so late. I think we’re very fortunate that they did as well, otherwise we would be endlessly subjected to replays of the Dempsey offside call from now until the end of the World Cup. Sure, it was a terrible call, as was the call at the end of the Slovenia game, but the whining by the commentators, particularly the Big Red Donkey would have been unbearable. Thanks, Donovan (and Altidore!)

    @ Siberian Dog

Not as annoyed as I am at the fact that my country have to sing the national anthem of a different state; God Save The Queen is the British national anthem, not the English. And what the heck do we want to save the Queen for anyway?

Good win for you chaps today. I was watching England of course and 30 seconds after we’d won to finish top (with Slovenia on second), you lot scored to go top and push us into second.

You should have a very good chance to get to the semis now. You’ll get Ghana or Serbia in the second round, followed by Uruguay or Mexico. All of those are winnable for the US with Serbia probably being the hardest of the four.

Luckily for us, your last minute goal means we’ll have to get past Germany and then Argentina to get to the semis.

Good luck for the next round though.

    Way to go USA!

Also, did anybody see how badly North Korea got beat? Wonder if they will be defecting, after losing 2-1 to Brazil, and then 7-0 to Brazil’s former Colonizer, Portugal?

Actually, several of them don’t have to. Three players from the Winged Horses (I call them ‘Ros Ronery Boys’), play overseas, and I actually came across an article in the soccer blogosphere (sorry that I can’t provide the link) that stated that several more aren’t actually citizens of the Hermit Kingdom, but are natural-born citizens of Japan who were raised and educated Kim-style despite living in a free country.

That said, anything Kooky Kim might do to punish Ros Ronery Boys will likely pale in comparison to what Saddam Hussein’s boys did to Iraqi athletes that didn’t meet expectations. There were lots of stories on the internet about how they tortured and killed athletes back in their day.

Good Job team USA. Hey Goldy, think of the goal in the 91st minute of a 90 minute game as overtime.

    @ 7
Apparently the Portugal-North Korea result hasn’t been publicised in the DPRK. Goodness only knows what the team will be thinking in the next game. At least it’ll be easier.

And now Italy are out! Could be a good year for the plucky, athletic, battling but ultimately unskilled underdog.
