Naturally I was really busy on Thursday, on a news day replete with interesting Republican accomplishments. Here’s a recap….

First there was Bush’s report to Congress (and the nation) on “progress” in Iraq since the Surge™ began. Check out Fred Kaplin’s Slate piece on the “accomplishments” titled “You Call That Progress? The outrageous White House report on Iraq.” I sense skepticism.

President George W. Bush achieved something of his own “benchmark” when he tied Richard Nixon’s low mark in a recent Harris poll of presidential approval.

Florida Rep. Bob Allen (R-Men’s Room) shows that even Republicans can try earning $20 the good ol’ fashion way.

President George W. Bush creates more scandal by trying to fire someone.

Now 3600+ U.S. soldiers have given their life for Saddam’s WMD Saddam’s role in 9-11-2001 stopping the Iraqi humanitarian crisis ousting Saddam training…er…fighting them over there oil somethin’ or the other that is really, really worthwhile.

Daniel at On the Road to 2008 noticed that Rep. Dave Reichert’s web site has carefully documented Reichert’s “record of independence and bi-partisan leadership.” Mmmmmm….impressive!

Republicans show their fund raising prowess by finishing somewhere in the top five.

Wingnut Pundit Jack Burkman demonstrates his commitment to small businesses.

President George W. Bush finally takes credit for his administration’s accomplishments in the Valerie Wilson covert dissemination case.

    Now EVERY PIECE OF LEGISLATION GOING THROUGH THE SENATE is being blocked by Republican filibuster. That’s right, every single bill. Every single bill needs 60 votes for cloture to proceed to the floor. But wait!

    Nary a peep comes from the mouths of Republicans on this travesty of “the tyranny of the minority” and how it must end. The newspapers are silent on the issue, and good Republicans are happily pointing out how disappointing the Democratic legislative record is.

    The police can’t do too much when the politicians refuse to allow them to enforce laws. This guy should have been deported as soon as he completed his sentence for incest. Given the timing, I’m betting that would have been during the 1990’s, when the Clinton Administration was in charge of the federal government.

    Pierce County failed to have him register as a sex offender, and the state legislature failed to toughen the laws on sex offenders. Don’t lay blame for this one on the Republicans.

    BTW, isn’t Seattle a sanctuary city? Do all of you still think that is a good idea?

    This is one of my favorite quotes about Libertarians. Care to comment or critique?

    If you want a place like Manhattan to exist you have to accept the masssive government that is a necessary condition for such a place. All of those people and buildings piled on top of each other requires a rather invasive and elaborate regulatory structure, as well as substantial government provision of public services. One can cosmetically “privatize” some of those services, a process which in practice involves expanding the local patronage machine, but that doesn’t change the fact that the government is basically paying the bill. You need the kind of collective action which only government, or some equivalent with a different name, can provide.

    Having said that, I do think libertarians could find their calling by focusing on stupid state and local laws, and I don’t mean symbolic but not especially important things like seatbelt laws and smoking bans. Small businesses do face rather onerous regulations and taxation, often applied by corrupt and/or incompetent agencies, in many municipalities. There are genuine and pointless barriers to the kind of economic freedom libertarians talk about, but the federal payroll tax isn’t really a particularly important one.

    Sens.
