I am never going to get pregnant. I have never understood why conservatives are so obsessed with abortion, but then hate the idea of helping take care of kids.
I want abortion to be safe, legal and as rare as possible. I get that some conservatives see it as murder. But we allow murder under controlled circumstances. The military gets to kill, so do cops and executioners in prisons. I don’t hear many conservatives calling for police, the military and executioners to be tried for murder.
So back to my fundamental question, why don’t conservatives put their efforts into mitigating the reasons women get pregnant and want an abortion and why don’t they incentivize childbirth?

Because it’s not really about abortion, per se. It’s a broader anti-woman, anti-autonomy, anti-sex agenda deriving its roots from a medieval paternal superstition.
If they were rationally and honestly against abortion as murder, they would be doing everything possible to ensure that the need for such procedures was as rare as possible – like fact-based sex education and widespread accessibility of contraception. It’s telling that those sorts of policies are exactly what they’re against, as well as abortion.

Problem there is that it’s a problem that has gone way beyond one that is solved, or even improved, by merely spending more money for education and creating more community problems.
It’s gone beyond role models and TV ads saying ‘Stay in School.’.
I don’t have an answer because my answer is unconstitutional on probably more levels than I could properly enumerate. Off the top of my head I’d violate at least three, probably four of the Amendments enumerated in the Bill of Rights.
So, more money into education to help the six year olds really doesn’t address the 15-25 year olds that are murdering each other every weekend. Stopping that means cleaning house and there’s no way to do that without some major declaration causing wholesale loss of civil rights.
Short of treating it like a war zone and clearing it out, I don’t have an answer. But short of that, I am unconvinced there is a successful solution. Cue Doctor Steve.

Well, I news flashes on Tropical Strom/Hurricane Isaac’s (the “Laughter of God”) possible disruption of the Republican convention for several days, so it’s only fitting that I finish the subject today.
On Saturday the Republicans bowed to reality and cancelled the first day of their convention. They will open the convention with a few formalites, and then recess until sometime tomorrow. As of this morning, they were still working on re-juggling their schedule, cutting out some speaches and cutting the time limits on others. Mitt’s and Ann Romney’s speaches probably won’t be reduced in time.
The center of the storm is still several hundred miles west of Tampa, with predicted landfall around New Orleans as a Cat. 1 or Cat. 2 Hurricane. Our prayers to those people there – many are still struggling to recover after the devastation of Katrina. In the meantime, Tampa – and much of southern Florida – is getting drenched with heavy rains and winds, with some local flooding.

One of the things that Chicago needs and has never had is a plan to manage it’s contraction. Chicago has been contracting since the 50’s and will never be a city of 3,600,000 again. For example:
It’s time to shrink the city. Take most of that land off the market so that the remaining land can be developed at a profit and you can employ some of those aimless young people in the building trades.
A square mile is about 700 acres, btw.

The Saltwater Beach Park on the shore of Puget Sound in the Richmond Beach area of Shoreline is on fire.
About 5 acres of brush between the water and railroad tracks are on fire, and numerous fire and police units are on the scene. Local news organizations also are there.
