Open Thread 7/30

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 7/30/12, 7:55 am

– This may be the most ignorant thing anyone has possibly said to anyone ever in any circumstance.

– Why does Thomas Paine hate free enterprise?

– In addition to all of these points, I’m not sure the leaderless Occupy movement and Bane go hand in glove.

– The settlement between Seattle and the DOJ (pdf). I haven’t read it, but most of the commentary about it sounds encouraging. The proof of the pudding will of course be in the eating.

– Charter school advocates are totally above board.

– Not the Olympics, but a great gold medal.

– And as far as I know, this may be the first time ant babies have been given haircuts for science.

Romney doesn’t just get numbers wrong. He doesn’t give a damn about factual information. He’s a pathological liar and a sociopath.

Right, because all Palestinians are fanatical terrorists eager to blow themselves up for the cause. There are an awful lot of Palestinians who have had their homes and farmland bulldozed out in the middle of the night and in broad daylight without notice and at gunpoint. When things get too quiet in Gaza or the West Bank, the Israeli Army increases patrols and snipe farmers in their fields and little kids in the streets. The Israeli Army has been repeatedly been caught using butterfly mines spread by helicopter over Palestinian farmland.

If you think those folks are so wealthy, why don’t you go to the West Bank or Gaza and look around. Those people are so poor most of them are dressed in rags and have no shoes. They’ve had their farms and houses confiscated without notice or any recourse to build Israeli settlements to accommodate the Russian, Polish and Hungarian Jews who are moving there by the thousands.

When they get irritated at the water or electricity being shut off, the Army just goes in and shoots the most vocal individuals dead. They aren’t allowed to make a living for themselves. How the hell do you expect people to react to that shit? Would you be willing to compromise with someone who says flat out “give us all your land, forsake your traditional religion, let us execute your political leaders at will and we’ll allow you to live in abject poverty”?

Israel wasn’t magically created, it was imposed on the area by outside military action. The original Israeli leaders were people who themselves used car bombs, assassinations and incredible economic frauds to create Israel in the first place.

Romney’s comments appearing to revel in Palestinian poverty were highly unusual.

Is it fair to say this is continuation of the continuation of the conservatives idea of Social Darwinism and herman’s caine “If you are poor, blame yourself”.
Or as it could be like Liberal Scientist commented. “Conservatives like to attack people they perceive as weaker than they are.” A man who has so much money he won’t release his tax forms to show where he hid it all, is attacking a culture in poverty.

I wonder what the Palestinian per-capita GDP would be today if Arafat had signed on in 2000 rather than launching an intifada.

Of course, there might not be all that free money handed to them, so that would have to be taken into consideration.

    Goddamn likely voter polls.

The poll, conducted for The Hill by Pulse Opinion Research, suggests voters see little difference between the candidates on character issues that Democrats have cited as key to Obama’s appeal.

It found 48 percent of voters consider Romney the stronger leader, compared to 44 percent who favored Obama.

    http://thehill.com/polls/24091.....-character

All that money the left will spend portraying Obama as a nice guy might not be so successful if the economy continues to trend downward at current pace. Seems competence means something to people who actually show up to vote:

The poll found 93 percent of voters consider “policies and competence” more important than “likability” when choosing who to support for president.

Time for more anti-dressage ads, I guess.

Hell, when has a Republican ever accepted responsibility for their fuckups. You never do. Ever. ” … GM is alive.”

I think that’s the second half of what Rujax spews pretty much daily around here.

GM’s share of the U.S. market fell to 18.1% in the first half of this year from 19.9% a year earlier.

    http://www.latimes.com/busines.....?track=rss

Ah, but GM is selling more cars than last year, I’m told. Sales up 4%. That doesn’t sound bad, until compared with the rest of the industry:

Through June, the automaker has sold a little more than 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S., a 4% gain in a period when the industry has grown sales 15%.

Perhaps the scariest thing about GM is how they’re selling those cars.

    Subprime loans is how:

GM Financial auto loans to customers with FICO scores below 660 rose from 87% of total loans in Q4 2010 to 93% in Q1 2012.

The worse the FICO score, the bigger the increase. From Q4 2010 to Q1 2012, GM Financial loans to customers with the worst FICO scores — below 540 — shot up 79% to more than $2.3 billion. The second worst category, 540-599, rose 28% from about $3.4 billion to $4.3 billion.

Prime loans, those above 660, dropped 42% to $676 million.

    http://news.investors.com/arti.....-sales.htm

To summarize, a government-owned corporation is lagging behind the free market in the industry, and is stooping to the subprime market at a rate about a third higher than the industry as a whole. Gotta make numbers? Sell to those who are least able to buy.

OK, GM is alive, with an awful lot of taxpayer subsidy. But for how long?

It’s a weird argument – Bush43 was incompetent so it’s alright for Obama to be incompetent, too.

“Doctor Steve repeatedly brings up spending excess and poor controls of spending by the Bush administration as an excuse for Obama to do the exact same thing.”

Buy yourself a clue, Bob. Republican spending excesses go back decades. Reagan ran up deficits. Bush 41 ran up deficits. Bush 43 ran up deficits. Hell, as you ran up trillions in debt unnder Bush 43 we heard from you that “deficits don’t matter”. It certainly didn’t matter if you held both congress and the White House because, as the nation witnessed, you still ran up deficits.

What are you going to do that’s different, Bob? Anything at all? Given your dismal track record on deficit spending, why on earth should anybody believe you when you refuse to even discuss what your candidate would do that’s good for America?

    “policies and competence”

Mitt Romney, “We can almost speak in shorthand,” Mr. Romney said in an interview. “We share common experiences and have a perspective and underpinning which is similar.” […] “Before I made a statement of that nature, I’d get on the phone to my friend Bibi Netanyahu and say: ‘Would it help if I say this? What would you like me to do?’”

Bibi Netanyahu, “I remember him for sure, but I don’t think we had any particular connections” “I knew him and he knew me, I suppose.”

Seeing as how you are either unwilling or simply incapable of talking about your candidate’s “policies and competence”, would you care to talk about this instead, Bob? What does this reveal about your candidate?

Your candidate insulted Great Britain, and now Bibi Netanyahu makes him look like a liar. That’s some tour abroad your candidate is having. Would you please explain how anything Romney’s done on this tour would inspire voter confidence in your candidate’s “competence”?

You provided no link but here’s one:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04.....wanted=all

Sounds like they went way back.

Also sounds like Bibi had enough of an impression of Romney to tell stories about him during their time together at Bain:

Over dinner years later, aides said, Mr. Netanyahu would reveal the depth of his own scorekeeping, when he quipped, with mostly playful chagrin, that Mr. Romney had been “Henderson’s favorite.”

“His star,” the prime minister said of Mr. Romney’s time at Boston Consulting, “had already risen.”

So, Doctor Steve, I would say you have one unsourced statement contradicted by an entire article in the NYT.

I wasn’t there, you weren’t there. The article I provided talks about frequent meetings over a period of more than 30 years, and a sharing of advice between the two men that involved business and government.

Why is Medicare Part D a pariah around here? Yes, there could have been efforts to control costs by trying to take more from the pharmaceutical firms, but isn’t the outcome of the law a benefit to seniors?

As an analogy, Obama could have taken from the UAW during the GM bankruptcy (Chrysler, too), but did not. Does that make what Obama did a bad thing, in the eyes of HAers?

Yes, Medicare D costs money. So does Social Security.

Why is it disliked? Because costs escalated above the gimmicked level touted? You guys think that won’t happen with ACA?

Serious question. What’s the problem with Medicare D that makes it viewed differently from Social Security and ACA, both programs that will cost far more than ‘officially’ envisioned?

Do HAers want to see Medicare D go away?

    I’d like to know.

So, again, how is this different from ACA, which is added on to the national debt because it isn’t paid for? Recall it was scored as a little less than a trillion dollars over the first 10 years, mostly because the revenues flow in far sooner than the costs begin to add up.

I understand that Medicare D wasn’t paid for. What I don’t understand is how it differs from ACA in that regard.

I’d argue the same with Social Security, but then we’d have to have the fight over whether Social Security really affects the deficit…..

    So I won’t.

Here’s something else Republicans are always lying about, from Huffpo.

In another interview on CNN’s Situation Room, Israel’s defense minister, Ehud Barak, told Blitzer that Obama’s administration had done more to support the relationship between the two nations than any he could remember.

“I think that from my point of view as defense minister they are extremely good, extremely deep and profound. I can see long years, [sic] administrations of both sides of political aisle deeply supporting the state of Israeli and I believe that reflects a profound feeling among the American people,” Barak said. “But I should tell you honestly that this administration under President Obama is doing in regard to our security more than anything that I can remember in the past.”

Is Puddy really keep trying to shovel that argument that some minor mistakes in the Olympics prove Romney was “right???”

The point is, dumbbut, that it’s incredibly stupid to go on a foreign trip which your PR people say will demonstrate your foreign policy and diplomatic skills, and then insult your hosts shortly after getting off the airplane.

And the Prime Minister WAS right – the London Olympics are incredibly more complicated than the Salt Lake City Olympics ever were – the Summer games are inherently MUCH bigger than the winger games, and putting them on in a major cosmopolitan city with centuries-old street layouts can’t be compared with putting them on in the very small Salt Lake City.

Of course, that’s not the REAL reason why Romney went to London, to play diplomat. He went there because that’s where the cameras were going to be, and more importantly, that’s where the money is. He attended a fundraiser on foreign soil taking money from foreign bankers to influence U.S. banking policy. Not only that, but the very people giving him money were the ones responsible for the LIBOR scandel in Britain, which is about to spread to the U.S. Those bankers were just hedging their bets, they want assurance that Romney will be a “bought man” who will make sure the U.S. Justice Dept. doesn’t seek to extradite them and put them in jail.

Whatever became of the Republican insistence that U.S. politicians, and even entertainers, should not criticize U.S. policy abroad?

At one point he claimed he did, but he couldn’t point to the thread where he did so. It’s such a simple thing to do, yet for Puddy it seems so hard. It must be profoundly embarrasing to align yourself with white supremecist killers when you, yourself, are not white.

It’s like they can’t run against the real man and his actual record or something. Yup: Romney’s plan would indeed cut billions from cops, firefighters and teachers
    By Greg Sargent
Yesterday Mitt Romney claimed that it was “ completely absurd” of the Obama campaign to argue that he favors cutbacks in cops, firefighters and teachers. “The federal government doesn’t pay for teachers, firefighters or policemen,” Romney said, adding that they were paid by states and localities.

What’s getting lost in the back and forth here is that Romney’s actual economic plan would, in fact, cut billions of dollars in federal money that goes to cops, firefighters, and teachers — perhaps more than $10 billion a year, in fact.

Obama signed a law handing Israel $70M so that Israel could defend itself from the Palestinian rockets.

I suppose I could make two points:

    1. Barak thanked Obama for doing something for Israel that most leftists would object to – helping Israel against the Palestinians.

    2. It’s an incredible coinky-dinky, isn’t it, that the moolah flows from The One to Israel just as Romney arrives to meet with Bibi. Almost as coinky-dinky as when Obama hastily scheduled a speech to be given just before a foreign policy speech that Dick Cheney gave a couple of years back. That’s one nervous president we have. This leaked report isn’t about Holder. But if Obama waives his previous Executive Privilege claim, the last couple of reports will probably be withheld while the investigators look into the emails they have been trying to review.

If there’s nothing in the withheld emails, no reason not to release them, right? Especially if a deal gets cut, say, to release them in exchange for no leaks and for no report until after the election.

Or maybe those emails are so damning that Obama can’t let them see the light of day.

You’re already making shit up, Bob. Quite understandable, given that you have so little to work with, what with your candidate being so hugely unpoular within his own party.

    What was actually said,

“But I should tell you honestly that this administration under President Obama is doing in regard to our security more than anything that I can remember in the past.”

Nothing about leftists. But there’s certainly a very strong inference that the Obama administration has done far more than any recent Republican administration. But you’d rather not talk about that, right, Bob?

At the urging of Valerie Jarrett, President Barack Obama canceled the operation to kill Osama bin Laden on three separate occasions before finally approving the May 2, 2011 Navy SEAL mission, according to an explosive new book scheduled for release August 21. The Daily Caller has seen a portion of the chapter in which the stunning revelation appears.

In ”Leading From Behind: The Reluctant President and the Advisors Who Decide for Him,“ Richard Miniter writes that Obama canceled the “kill” mission in January 2011, again in February, and a third time in March. Obama’s close adviser Valerie Jarrett persuaded him to hold off each time, according to the book.

As I read this this morning, I knew puddles was going to show up slobbering over a Daily Caller ‘bombshell’ – and, lo and behold, there he goes, right on time.

The Media Matters (OH NOEZ! SOROS!!) article I linked to thoroughly debunks whatever talking point puddles was striving to make.

It had me thinking…the premise they’re putting forward is that Obama ‘killed’ a mission to take out bin Laden three times in the winter/spring 2011.
Then, apparently, he authorized it, and it was a smashing success.

Even if you accept their ‘interpretation’ (which the MediaMatters article completely undermines), you have a situation where Obama was directly and actively managing the development of a military operation that was ultimately successful. He did this within 2.5 years of taking over the Presidency, and it was something George W. Bush could not do in 7 years, despite making the “War on Terrah” his signature accomplishment.

Once again we confront the eternal question provoked by interactions with Republicans: “Stupid or Lying?”

Hmmm, Romney’s camp was ectstatic over the “endorsement” of Lech Walensa. They hoped to turn it into a trifecta, gaining the support of American labor unions, catholics, and Polish descendents.

But Solidarity immediately issued a press release saying it had nothing to do with Romney’s trip, and that in their view Romney was against the trade union movement as evidenced by his own words (relatively recently) and actions while at Baine Capital. Others pointed out that just last year, Walesa wrote that in his opinion, “temporary communism” was the only hope for poorer countries in Africa.

Then Romney gave a speech, which was marred by the crowd shouting “Obama! Obama!”. It’s not clear whether they disagreed with Romney, or whether Republican references to “our next president” caused them to believe that Romney was merely the advance man for President Obama, whom they expected to appear next.

Finally, Der Spiegel, Germany’s biggest news magazine, declared Romney to have proven that he isn’t qualified to lead America on the international front.

Oh, and a final note to Puddy: It doesn’t matter whether there were organizational or logistics problems at the Olympics. Every modern Olympics has had their share of them. What IS important that in diplomacy, words DO matter, and even a slight difference in words can make a big difference in results. Romney thought he could make some patronizing statements which would appeal to the home audience and make him look good, and he insulted his hosts. He also referred to the “backside” of 10 Downing Street, which in English popular usage means he was looking out it’s ass. The he gratuitously referred to a meeting with the head of MI6, the existence of which is NEVER officially admitted to by the government or the press (Gee, even I knew that!).

Not ready for prime time, despite spending over eight years campaigning. Obama managed to hit the ground running and quickly bring himself up to speed, but Romney just doesn’t get it.

News Item: Romney, who’s campaign has suffered reverses this week due to mistakes made during his trip to London, Israel, and Poland, has decided to take a cue from his Baine Capital days and issued layoff notices to his entire staff, including himself. Instead, all work on the Romney for President campaign will be out-sourced to China, where they are testing a new high-technology robot to replace the one which suffered failures in it’s initial version.

Provide one little snippet of support for your direct statement that Romney expected to get American labor union support out of this.

Walesa was a symbol of resistance to oppression by communism, essentially a symbol of a struggle for freedom. That’s far different from the US labor movement today.

Finally, Der Spiegel, Germany’s biggest news magazine, declared Romney to have proven that he isn’t qualified to lead America on the international front.

Actually, that quote was from Center-left daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, as Der Spiegel called it. Since I’ve never heard of that paper, I doubt it’s Germany’s biggest.

One paper I HAVE heard of, Die Weit, had this to say, in the same article:

The Middle East is a weak flank for Obama, who has demanded one-sided concessions from Jerusalem, thus casting a massive shadow on the bilateral relationship.

Gee, cherry-picking quotes according to one’s ideology is a game two can play.
