Looks like a pretty typical piece of campaign literature, huh? An oversized, glossy, folded pamphlet touting Rep. Dave Reichert’s reelection.
Only it’s not a piece of campaign literature, it’s a piece of congressional franking, paid for with our taxpayer dollars, and a clear violation of the spirit of the franking rules, if not the law itself. Oh… and it’s only one of six such mailings Reichert’s office has recently sent to voters.
Indeed, Reichert’s mailings have been raising eyebrows and filling mailboxes for months. At last night’s Drinking Liberally an experienced campaign staffer actually laughed when he saw the congressional seal on the pamphlet, while another knowledgeable politico rolled his eyes in disbelief. And this morning I corresponded with a longtime Republican consultant who confided that there’s a pretty blurry line between what is or is not a legitimate use of franking privilege, but that this one “crosses it by a mile.”
But it’s not just the content of Reichert’s mailings that pushes the limits of the franking rules. House members are prohibited from franking mass mailings to constituents within 90 days before an election; with a September 19 primary date, that means the last day this latest mailing should have been postmarked was Tuesday, June 20th. Yet this latest flyer didn’t start hitting mailboxes until Monday, June 26th.
Of course, presorted standard mailings like this can take over a week to go cross country, but since the cost is distance sensitive and the mailing was likely produced by local consultant Bruce Boram, chances are it was printed locally and mailed from the USPS’s Seattle Bulk Mail Center.
So the question is… when did this mailing drop? If it actually went out after June 20th, then Reichert broke the franking rules. Not exactly the kind of disregard for the law you’d expect from an ex-sheriff.

If you want more of the same, just keep voting for the people who control the Congress now. Abuse of franking was something the GOP said it would clean up in 1994. This and other mailings are simply more evidence of out of control spending by the GOP congress – spending designed to reelect a GOP majority that only postures as fiscally responsible. Real reporters in the mainstream media should be demaning all the data on use and abuse of the frank.

Billy, state democrats are subverting our constitution by pushing for non citizens to vote and to give them amnesty for breaking the law (the latter one goes both ways nationally). So there you have it. As for the items you may be thinking about, the wire-taps of known terrorists and the banking issue, both are legal and not against the constitution. Even if you really want them to be and say so a bunch of times it doesn’t make it so.
As for being happy, sure the economy is booming, we are safe, the weather is great, the Supreme Court is back being a court and not a “legislative” branch. Things are good. Do I wish we there was a way to speed up Iraq, sure, but that is going very well. If you thought it would be done quickly you do not know history…..hell we’re still in Germany for gods sake.
I do love the passion of this board and get a great laugh at it when I take the time to read some posts. I just miss Roger on this thread…cause he has such great ways of using our language.
Roger Rabbit spews:
First of all, I offer my condolences to Sgt. Plouhar’s family. Their grief is shared by an entire nation grateful for his service. We’ll never get wingnuts to understand this, but we’re against the war, not the soldiers fighting it.
The volunteer military is a good thing. Let me rephrase that. We need a military, and filling the ranks with volunteers is a damn sight better than filling the ranks with conscripts.
Of course, I want “voluntary” service to be truly voluntary. I don’t think recruiters should lie to prospective recruits, or take undue advantage of gullible teenagers. Only the most naive or dishonest person would deny there have been recruiting abuses. The solution is not to be against the military — we need a fully manned military — or against the recruiters, who are trying to do their job. The solution is proper guidelines, and adequate oversight of recruiting practices, so that abuses don’t occur.
I don’t have a great problem with the fact minorities and poor kids are over-represented in the military, compared to the general demographic. Many of these kids see the military as an open door to opportunities that would otherwise be closed to them. It was for me — I went to law school on the G.I. Bill. For no one is this more true than the immigrants who dream of become American citizens, and realize that dream by enlisting in the U.S. armed forces. A door that otherwise might never open for them.
So where am I going with this? Simply this. There are people who claim “supporting the troops” means we have to be for the war. They are wrong. Sgt. Plouhar’s dad says his son believed in the mission and disagreed with Moore’s criticism of the war. I don’t doubt that, and I respect Sgt. Plouhar’s right to his opinion. But — and here is the huge but …
Whether soldiers want us to support their mission is irrelevant.
That’s what I said: Irrelevant. It’s not up to the soldiers to decide whether our country should go to war, or not. Someone once said war is too important to leave it up to generals. In that case, it’s certainly too important to leave it up to sergeants, or privates, to decide whether we should be there or not. Questions of war and peace are for citizens to decide. That is our right, and our obligation. As citizens, we have a right and a duty to insist that our government go to war only when war is justified and necessary. We can’t let Marine sergeants make that decision for us. As citizens, we owe it to Sergeant Plouhar and others like him in our military services to make sure their lives aren’t squandered needlessly or foolishly. Sgt. Plouhar may have disagreed with our opinion of the war he died in. We have our duty, nonetheless; and just as he pressed forward in the line of his duty, so we must press forward with our duty.
And I mean that with the greatest respect for him, his family, and all who loved him and will miss him.
Roger Rabbit spews:

“That will be handled by the appropriate body. It doesn’t look good, but I will wait for the proper authorities to make the call.”
The whole problem is that with the GOP running congress, the “appropriate body” and “proper authorities” not only aren’t “making the call,” they’re the perpetrators.
In other words, what you’re suggesting is akin to waiting for the police to investigate thefts of pot from the station house evidence room.

Bernard B. Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner, is close to reaching an agreement with prosecutors to plead guilty to having accepted improper gifts totaling tens of thousands of dollars while he was a city official in the late 1990’s, two people with information on the plea negotiations said yesterday. . . .
Under the proposed agreement, Mr. Kerik would plead guilty to failing to report accepting roughly $200,000 in renovations to his Bronx apartment — a violation of the city’s administrative code. The work, officials have said, was paid for by a New Jersey construction company that the city had long accused of having ties to organized crime.
Mr. Kerik nearly rose. . . to the rank of cabinet secretary, when President Bush nominated him to head the Department of Homeland Security in December 2004. But he was forced to withdraw a week later, citing possible tax problems involving his family’s nanny.

“1.) Why would Jim McDimwitt have to send political material in a “SAFE” congressional district? That is a non-sequitor.”
I would agree that McDermott has less need than Reichert to send out campaign propaganda. But, campaign material should be produced and paid for by the campaign (i.e. not produced and paid for by the taxpayers).
There is no reason that McDermott would have any more or less reason to send out franked informational mailings (which are official U.S. Government business). The fact that you refer to this as “political material” and hint that it should somehow relate to how “safe” a seat is, betrays a complete misunderstanding of the franking privilege.
“2.) You admitting to writing him and receiving materials proves to me I am correct! You ARE that mummified brain moonbat librul!”

So when Bush leaves office in 2008, lets make sure the new Democratic president keeps Gitmo open. Then arrest Bush, Rove, Cheney, Rumsfield, Gonzales, etc. for endangering the national security of our country by violating the Constitution. Then put them in cages at Gitmo for the next four years, refuse to provide attorneys, argue that they are exempt from writ of HC, and even refuse to confirm or deny that they are being held.

“As for…the banking issue…legal and not against the constitution.”
Umm, how do you know? It’s a SECRET program, and even though its existence has been revealed, the details are still tightly held. According to the NY Times, it was because SWFT executives were worried about the program’s legality and were discussing pulling out because of their concerns about legal and financial risks if the program were revealed, which is when the administration placed the first controls on the program, in 2003. Was it legal before that? Not known. The applicable laws, including the Right to Financial Privacy Act, have not been tested in national security cases.
“Initially, there appear to have been few formal limits on the searches…”At first, they got everything – the entire Swift database,” one person close to the operation said.”
Was that legal?
And some of the “20 current and former government officials and industry executives [who] discussed aspects of the Swift operation with The New York Times on condition of anonymity” said that “what they viewed as an urgent, temporary measure had become permanent nearly five years later without specific Congressional approval or formal authorization.”
Is that legal? Rhetorical question, BTW. I’m not asking you to answer.
At least three sources said that this transaction tracing involved involving “many thousands” of people or groups in the United States. Here’s a question you CAN answer: Would the administration be able to get legal warrants justified by probable cause for “many thousands” of transations?
“Even if you really want them to be and say so a bunch of times it doesn’t make it so.”
That oes for asserting the legality and constitutionality of the administration’s actions.

I can hardly wait to see Ohio’s new district map after Blackwell’s bid for governor goes down in flames.

Yes, Puddy, we know you need to “read the pundits” (translation: consult the Noise Machine) before you can collect your “thoughts.”

I hope nobody asks Puttyferbrains to explain separation of powers or due process of law. God only knows what would spurt out of his ass.

“ANNOUNCER: Seven out of every ten black children are born out of wedlock”
Actually, Puttybutt, the correct number is 64% — and you plastered a racial connotation on it that simply doesn’t exist. Out-of-wedlock birth rates have also soared among whites. A Brookings Institution study concluded the rapid growth of out-of-wedlock births after 1970 is due to the disappearance of “shotgun weddings” from American culture. http://www.brookings.edu/comm/.....s/pb05.htm

But then, we already knew Puttybutt is a racist.

So it seems Reichert could be a lawbreaker. Send him to Gitmo with that other traitor to the Constitution, Rep. Peter King, who seems to be in league with al-Qaida in an attempt to destroy American institutions.

“What the fuck are you babbling about? She isn’t allowed to attend a protest against Bush that is outside her district? What fucking planet are you from?”
By all means she is entitled and I encourage her to spend all the time she wants with her liberal idealogical kin. And that appears to be exactly what she has been doing, as pointed out by the PI’s Joel Connelly:
“she is running for Congress from the 8th District on the Eastside, but Democrat Darcy Burner has become as familiar a public presence in Seattle as ubiquitous 43rd District legislative candidates.
Burner spoke at a Westlake Mall rally as President Bush attended a fundraiser for her opponent in Medina. She has been feted at a Belltown fundraiser with Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and at a Seattle Labor Temple event with Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., boss of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
She has lifted cups with liberal bloggers at the Montlake Ale House, been the object of a fundraising appeal from Seattle’s Rep. Jim McDermott, and was a delightful seatmate at Conservation Northwest’s dinner-auction at the Woodland Park Zoo.”
Perhaps the 8th is really the wrong district for her to compete. After all, she seems to avoid it and relishes the 43 legislative district much more. And by all indications, her liberal worldview is probably a better fit with those voters anyway.

Are you really that naive?
Big fucking whoop. She visits Seattle. Reichert does fundraisers in Alaska. Almost every congressperson goes all kinds of places to attend events and raise funds.
“Perhaps the 8th is really the wrong district for her to compete.”
Well…that would be a lot of work since she lives in the 8th. Geez…you think Sheriff Dave should run for congress in Alaska, too?
“After all, she seems to avoid it and relishes the 43 legislative district much more.”
Of course, you are spewing ignorant bullshit, since the vast majority of her events have been held in the 8th.
(This is such a typical bullshitting wingnut tactic…pbj reads about one or two events outside the 8th and makes up a generalization. Next time, try to do a quantitative analysis of all her events over a 2 month period, dipshit.)
“And by all indications, her liberal worldview is probably a better fit with those voters anyway.”
Well…Bush lost in the 8th in 2000 and 2004, so it is not like the 8th is solid wingnut or anything…

pbj makes a great point. BUrner is obviously far more comfortable in the 7th. Perhaps she missed her calling. if you guys love her so much, why not have her take on McDermott?? He needs the competition. OTherwise, it looks like downtown Seattle special interests are trying to run their own candidate for the 8th congressional seat. In other words, someone who ,may live in the 8th, but seems to wish she didn’t. She clearly is more comfortable with the downtown Seattle special interests.

Nope…actually it was a completely vacuous point…she lives in the 8th, not the 7th or the 1st.
“BUrner is obviously far more comfortable in the 7th.”
More wingnut bullshit. Tell ya what, dipshit…quantify your belief. What percentage of her appearances and events in the last three months have been out of the 8th.
“if you guys love her so much, why not have her take on McDermott?? He needs the competition.”
Yaaawwwwnnnn.
“OTherwise, it looks like downtown Seattle special interests are trying to run their own candidate for the 8th congressional seat.”
Could be worse…she could feel most comfortable somewhere in, oh…I don’t know…like, Alaska.

Thank GOODNESS Darcy is a liberal. All these so-called conservatives have created the largest budget deficit in history, the largest federal budget in history and the largest federal agency in history. In addition, more babies have been aborted in the USA in six years of Bush than were aborted in eight years under President Clinton. Yep we need more liberals.
