Yay! A new open thread! Yesterday, after the debt deal was announced, I predicted the stock market would continue slithering lower, and that’s exactly what it’s doing today. The Dow is currently off about 100 points.

    Reasons?

First of all, the debt deal still has to pass Congress, and that’s not a sure thing as plenty of congress critters (and their constituents) dislike it.

But mainly, the market is reacting to non-debt-issue factors. First and foremost among these is growing evidence that the U.S. economy is sliding into a double-dip recession.

Also, anyone who understands economics, which includes all professional money managers and most investors, realizes that the debt deal reflects a government policy approach that is likely to undermine economic recovery — everyone knows that in a weak economy government policy should be stimulative, not austere.

Finally, there was a general expectation that the strong corporate earnings underpinning the stock market’s comeback following the 2009 crash would weaken going forward, and not only because of the weak economy, but also because the profit gains of 2009-2010 were a one-time that resulted from unrepeatable productivity gains that came from laying off workers during the Great Recession and making the remaining workers work harder.

MSNBC Poll: Public Disses Debt Deal

“Do you think the debt deal is good for the country?”

    1. 4.9% — “Yes, Washington is making a responsible effort to fix the nation’s long-term fiscal problems.”

    2. 12.4% — “Yes, the deal stinks but Congress had to do something quickly to save America’s ‘AAA’ rating.”

    3. 56.8% — “No, the deal relies too much on cutting spending for important government programs without asking more from wealthy individuals and corporations.”

    4. 20.7% — “No, the proposed cuts don’t do enough to bring entitlement programs and other government spending under control.”

    5. 5.2% — “Not sure, there aren’t enough details to make a call.”

RR @ #1: Note that under the debt deal, the Republicans have taken off the table just about every tool the Obama administration has to keep the U.S. economy from going into a double-dip rescession.

It’s pretty clear that’s exactly what they want. They want unemployment above 10% going into the 2012 elections, and by blaming Obama they will try to cash in on voter disatisfaction.

In the meantime, Ken Simac, the Republican Tea Party guy who’s challenging Jim Holperin (D-Wis) in one of the Wisconsin recall elections, compared public schools to the Nazi regime. Apparantly apopletic that a Christmas song wouldn’t be allowed as part of a school performance, he went on to rage against public schools teaching sex ed to kindergardeners, and claimed that teachers threaten to “blow the heads off” students who dont’ pay attention to teachings about carbon emissions. (His source apparantly is Glenn Beck).

His post on the Patriot Action Network (a Tea Party site) was taken down shortly after he won the nomination, but it remains in the Google cache:

The FBI doesn’t claim it’s close to solving the case, but here’s what we know about the new lead:

    1. It involves a new suspect who hasn’t previously been investigated; and

    2. It consists of complete fingerprints on one or more articles supplied to the FBI by a person close to the new suspect. The FBI crime lab is determining whether these fingerprints match partial fingerprints recovered from personal articles D.B. Cooper left on the plane.

Rachel’s donations are getting a small bump today. One of the donation page comments mentioned an appearance by her Mom on CBS this morning. A media bump. It happened with NBC a few days ago. I was hoping for an HA bump, as modest, even as tiny as it might be, by HA doing something a wee bit more than just mentioning her almost in passing in an open thread post. I’ll say that I do give Carl kudos for at least doing that. As for Goldy, he says that the Bible Study thread has a “spirit” that, along with his atheism, would make it inappropriate and somehow insincere. I disagree. No fallen Angels are HA’s posters, obviously, but I believe that even you risen apes can and should raise your spirit and take a pause for the cause. We have 20 days to go and counting.

It’s awful, apparently, that a guy running for election in another state reaffirms Godwin’s Law over schools. Although you guys seem pretty silent about all of the insinuations by the left over the past week that those on the right, who happen to be merely opposed to spending, are the equivalent of terrorists.

I suppose that talking tough that way is better than having to defend the feckless incompetence your leadership displayed over the past week. Just remember, that Satan Sandwich isn’t intended to be a suppository.

That guy is a gal — a Tea Partier running on “family values” who walked into a courthouse hand-in-hand with her boyfriend to file two divorce actions … once against her husband, and one against his wife. Oh, and she doesn’t pay her property taxes on time, either. And she loves to complain about Wisconsin’s business taxes being too high, even though her own business has paid a grand total of $1,800 of state business taxes over the last 10 years … an average of $180 a year. Let me tell you something, blockhead. I was on the Democratic observer team and personally witnessed both recounts in entirety. I spoke with Logan hourly, not daily, and all I saw was an honest man doing his job honestly.

Now here’s something else. I attended GOP chair Chris Vance’s daily press conferences out in the parking lot. I read every name in the daily sign-in books. Not once did Vance every set foot inside the building where the ballots were actually being counted. Everything he said to the media out in the parking lot was scripted in advance. Want to know what the GOP’s “observers” where doing inside? They were knitting, reading, and gossiping with each other. They were doing everything except watching ballots being counted. Why? Because there was nothing to see. As a Democratic observer, I spent my time keeping an eye on the Republican observers who weren’t observing anything, and documenting the fact they weren’t observing anything, so the Democratic Party had the evidence it needed to rebut the GOP’s lies.

I was there, you weren’t; I know what happened, you’re regurgitating hearsay party propaganda. Fuck you, Josef. Your boy Rossi lost that election because our candidate had more votes, not because of any ball0t-counting shenanigans. Every single ballot was counted at least seven times, and GOP observers were present every time any ballot was counted. And let me add that Loserboy Rossi diminished himself and his party by being one of the most graceless and whiny losers in our state’s history. And the whole whining WSRP wasn’t any better.

@18 Fuck you back. I know the whole story. The several hundred provisional ballots that went unverified before counting… the thousands of felons who weren’t supposed to vote… the thousands more votes than voters…

Dean Logan quit because of the superior airpower brought by SecDefWA Marummy. Here’s what he said…

“County employees are not treated with respect. There’s a lack of civility in the discussion,” Logan said Tuesday. “I did reach a point when I no longer wanted to subject myself to appearing before the council and giving them the forum for them to be uncivil.”
    …
Sims also said Logan’s resignation — which he blamed on partisan politics — will create a recruiting challenge.

“We could change more of the political environment here so it would be more attractive to people,” Sims said. “As we move away from the 2004 election, I think the rhetoric will die down, but it’s been pretty toxic regarding Dean.”
    …
King County’s vote counting in 2004 was marred by problems that included poor accounting.

Chelan County Superior Court Judge John Bridges blasted King County’s election administration but rejected the state Republican Party’s claim that those problems justified a revote.

    SOURCE

Also, Ron Sims admitted: “Dean has been personally hurt by the constant barrage of harsh personal attacks on his character and professionalism leveled by some partisan extremists and elected officials.”

Oh and Dean Logan was ocnviently absent when it came time to be accountable. Like this time.

Now who did that, who chased Dean Logan out? Marummy did it. She led the way. The observing that mattered was the voter rolls.

Once Dean was gone, we fixed the elections systems. Marummy Did It. Period.

    # 29 said…”I know the whole story. The several hundred provisional ballots that went unverified before counting… the thousands of felons who weren’t supposed to vote… the thousands more votes than voters…”

Funny, Republicans threw every allegation they could find into the suit to overthrow Gregoire’s 2004 election. They even picked a solidly Republican county, with Republican judges, to make sure they got the best judgement money could buy.

Problem was, they couldn’t prove their case. After all the press releases about thousands of felons voting, they were able to turn up only a handful, and at the end of the day one vote was taken away from the Rossi column. Overall, Gregoire’s lead actually INCREASED at the end of the election challenge.

So they got a fair hearing in front of a Republican judge, in a Republican county, and they still lost. The facts simply didn’t support their claims.

But they raised a lot of money, nationally, by complaining about how the election was “stolen” from them. Personally, I think it was just a scheme by the Repubilcan Party to seperate more money from the pockets of middle-class Republicans.

You do, huh? If hundreds of unverified ballots were counted how did WSRP manage to lose its $2 million lawsuit before a handpicked Republican judge in a handpicked Repoublican County? Incompetent lawyers?

Trust me on this pal, the GOPers fought hard over every disputed ballot, and every single ballot they disputed went to the county canvassing board, on which sat your Republican county prosecutor.

How many criminal charges did your Republican prosecutor file against Dean Logan or anyone else? None. How many criminal charges did your Bush-appointed Republican U.S. Attorney file against Dean Logan or anyone else? None.

The only airpower I saw was a stream of corporate jets flying in RNC lawyers and propagandists. The ballot-counting facility was directly under the Boeing Field landing approach, so I could count ’em as they flew in from D.C. There were about two dozen. But the GOP’s air force wasn’t big enough, because you guys lost anyway. See “Battle of Britain” for historical parallel (Nazi pun intentional).

@51 Obviously, you forget that Judge Bridges said:

I have been asked in closing argument to send a message. I’m going to decline that invitation. This Court is not in a position to fix the deficiencies in the election process that we heard about in this courtroom over the past nine days. However, the voters of this state are in a position to demand of their executive and legislative bodies that remedial measures be instituted immediately. And clearly, the evidence here suggests that the problems require more than just constructing new buildings and hiring more staff.

Mr. Logan in his testimony in court and, more particularly, in his deposition testimony
referred to the culture he found when he assumed the responsibilities of the Director of
    Elections in King County.
Almost anyone who works in state or local government knows exactly what this culture is. It’s inertia. It’s selfishness. It’s taking our paycheck but not
doing the work. It’s not caring about either our fellow workers or the public we are supposed to serve. It’s not taking responsibility. It’s refusing to be held accountable. And so it is the voters who should send the message.
    …
The petition did not assert fraud by any election official. The petition alleged that it was impossible to determine which gubernatorial candidate received the greatest number of
    legitimate votes.
Petitioners sought an order declaring the election null and void, setting the election aside, declaring that the certification of the results of the election and any election — I’m sorry, any certificate of election issued as a result of the election be void and directing that a new election be conducted.
    …
This Court concludes that the statutes and Supreme Court case law of this state require
that petitioner establish not only that illegal, invalid or improper votes were cast and/or
that there has been misconduct on the part of any member of any precinct election board
but also, that the petitioners must establish the element of causation, that is, in the
language of RCW 29A.68.070, that such irregularity or improper conduct was such as to
    procure Ms. Gregoire’s certification.
While there is evidence of irregularity, as there
appears to be in every election, based on the testimony of various county election
officials, there is no substantial evidence by clear and convincing evidence that improper
conduct or irregularity procured Ms. Gregoire’s election to the Office of Governor.

Massively abridged, but the point is state law doesn’t say if Y votes is the spread and X>Y where X = illegal votes, you can’t throw out the election. Judge Bridges wanted We The People to act, and we did.

Dicta aside, Judge Bridge’s ruling can be condensed to the following points:

    1. The Republicans failed to prove that more valid votes were cast for the Republican candidate;

    2. The Republicans failed to prove that thousands of felons voted illegally for Greguire (only one felon was identified as having voted illegally, and he voted for Rossi);

    3. The judge refused to assume, in the absence of evidence, that any discrepencies adhered to Gregoire’s benefit;

    4. The judge refused to throw out the election and call for a “do-over”, pointing out that he had no authority to do that under the State Constitution and statutes. (Funny, Republicans LIKE activists judges, and hate strict construction, when they think it would work for their benefit!)

I would note that the 2004 election was peculiar in that it was the one state-wide election where the largest counties were conducting both mail-in and precinct voting on a wide scale, which multiplied the problems encountered by Mr. Logan and his department. Despite this, the “discrepency” rate was very small, well under a fraction of 1%.

The remedial action taken was to go to an all-mail system (which will be fully in effect this year).

Did Jefferson’s claim of innocence sway Dems? After all, they had control of the House as of 2007 and if they were so willing to clean House, forcing Dollar Bill out would have been an obvious place to start, would it not?

    Regarding Sarah Palin’s “Undefeated”:

I think she’s got more support than the movie ticket sales indicate. It’s just that her support basis (unlike the financial interests which control mainstream republican politics) has very limited means. They may only go to the movie theatres once or twice a summer.

Sure, they’l buy her book, but paying $10 more per ticket when they can rent it on DVD for $1 at Redbox in a few weeks? Besides, who wants to go to the theatres to watch what, at best, would be described as a documentary? Isn’t that something you watch for free on TV when there’s nothing else on?

The President has a lot more supporters than Pailin ever did, but I doubt a documentary about him would do very well – especially in the highly competative summer season.

Which just goes to show the comparison between the President and Sarah Palin. The President knows better than to try to make a doumentary about him to be shown in movie theatres, especially on which will compete during the busy summer months. He would dismiss such an idea out of hand. Sarah Palin, however, doesn’t have the judgement to even question why it wouldn’t work, and she surrounds herself with sycophants who are more likely than not to encourage her with her self-delusions.

I heard reports that the Republicans tried to arrange a Tea Party rally in Washington D.C. to be held last Saturday to support their budget positions. The number of news media outnumbered the protestors.

Last summer, a Tea Party convention in Las Vegas had to be canceled for, well, lack of interest – just a couple of weeks before the event, if I remember correctly.

What’s hilarious about this is that the Republicans who are trying to use the Tea Party faithful as their “base” don’t understand the first thing about them. They aren’t well-off like the GOP financial elites who control the party. Most of them are either retired or work for a living, and a large number live in rural settins and presumably work on farms or make a living off supplying farmers.

Quite simply, most of them can’t take off at the drop of a hat during the summer months at the party’s bidding. Workers have to plan vacations months in advance, and they may only have a week available which they devote to family trips. Others can’t afford to travel to expensive cities.

The Las Vegas disaster a year ago was entirely predicatable, but they failed to see it. Many of the “Tea Party” base are Evangelicals, and the idea of going to “Sin City” didn’t appeal to them. Other than touring Hoover Dam, what other “family entertainment” could they do? Most of them would forego the expensive room rentals in favor of a spot at an RV park, which isn’t very comfortable in a hot Nevada summer.

What you think is hilarious, I think is fucking admirable. It’s how the democratic system is supposed to work.

As long as you’re going to make unsubstantiated allegations of racism, best not mention in the same paragraph that your family hails from the SE US. The opportunity to discuss roots of racism in southern Democrats is too tempting. Don’t forget that according to the flexible definition of racism, anyone who supported HRC in ’08 is racist. Even our First Black President is racist, according to the flowing CW of that primary election campaign.

The Tea Party objects to uncontrolled, baseless spending. Money thrown at unions, to save Chrysler, to patch over state deficits so the states can throw money at unions, and for health care everyone knows will cost more and provide less is objectionable. They’ll never be Democrats. Your basic premise is incorrect.

Since then, they’ve been a bit more nuanced, but just barely. From Willie Horton to false allegations of Obama as the “Kenyan candidate” and beneficiary of special advantages due to his race, the Republicans have continued to cash in on the race card.

I know from experience that not all southerners are racists, and there are plenty of racists even here in the Pacific Northwest. But only the Republicans have made it a consistent part of their political strategy.

    Activist And…

President of the Harvard Law Review (elected in great part by the support of conservatives by the way) – where did you get that arschloch – kook-aid site? From the NY Times

    Change in Selection System

Mr. Obama was elected after a meeting of the review’s 80 editors that convened Sunday and lasted until early this morning, a participant said.

Until the 1970’s the editors were picked on the basis of grades, and the president of the Law Review was the student with the highest academic rank. Among these were Elliot L. Richardson, the former Attorney General, and Irwin Griswold, a dean of the Harvard Law School and Solicitor General under Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon.

That system came under attack in the 1970’s and was replaced by a program in which about half the editors are chosen for their grades and the other half are chosen by fellow students after a special writing competition. The new system, disputed when it began, was meant to help insure that minority students became editors of The Law Review.

Attorney – So? What/who did he represent in court

    Constitutional Law instructor – So

8 year State Senator – Voted present 130 times

brief tenure in the U.S. Senate with some notable accomplishments… Yeah here’s one he’s now following in da whitey house…

But there were a number of people that would have met that criterion. There were at least a large handful who probably had the intellectual and personal characteristics to be good leaders of the Review. From among those, the conservatives were eager to have somebody who would treat them fairly, who would listen to what they had to say, who would not abuse the powers of the office to favor his ideological soul mates and punish those who had different views. Somebody who would basically play it straight, I think was really what we were looking for.

    Was that hard to find?

It was very hard to find. And ultimately, the conservatives on the Review supported Barack as president in the final rounds of balloting because he fit that bill far better than the other people who were running. …

Bob — Do you know why they are called entitlements? Because we pay for them, and , ipso fatso are entitled to them. If you cut SS, where will Republicans get all the extra cash that they like spending under the table? There’s only so many arms that you can sell on the sly to the Iranians.

The ‘spending cuts’ that your hallowed nitwits of the ‘bagger movement are pushing are cuts that will only hurt their own interests — and they don’t understand that.

This whole ‘cut spending’ meme is so that the economy will tank and job creation will slow so that Republicans can falsely promise, once again like in 2010, that they will produce jobs.

You won’t have a viable candidate in 2012, so Obama will win by default. Hopefully, he’ll take a cue from the King of Pop and do a little crotch-grabbing victory dance.

He may rediscover in his second term a part of his anatomy that he had forgotten about.

And, yes: A huge ‘bagger poster of Obama with a bone through his nose is racist.

Superhero of color: Spider-Man reveals himself to be Miles Morales, a half-black, half-Hispanic teen. He’s not replacing Peter Parker, though; his story runs in a parallel universe.
    http://www.usatoday.com/life/c.....-man_n.htm

And the racist bigoted comment were running about 10 to 1 against.
    Here are some highlights.

    – “But in the Ultimate line, launched in 2000 to tell contemporary stories”. Why does everything have to be political correct?
    – There you go…must… be a race change due to the Census.
    – Disgusting
    – Miles Morales resembles Barack Obama. Cool!…That in itself makes me want to puke
    – Enough of this politically correct, racist nonsense.
    – Shame on Marvel Comics! This is not diversity; this is a disgrace! Spiderman was Peter Parker, and Peter Parker was white. Create a new character if you want to prove that Marvel Comics is “diverse”. Minorities are typically less than 18% of the population, but they seem to get nearly 100% of the history. Why should white children not have a comic book hero that they can identify with?
    – Well, that nails it. Spidey’s dead to me.
    – Once again, PC run amok! First, who cares what color a super hero’s skin is? Liberals? Second, modifying traditional hero’s to satisfy Leftist PC garbage takes away something from the culture.
    – Peter Parker could not be whiter. A black boy under the mask just don`t look right. This opens up a whole new story line with a whole new set of problems. Who is going to believe a black man in a mask is out for the good of man kind?
    – Actually, we have a half African-American President.
    – WRONG! We have a African President.
    – super hero affirmative action
    – what a load of @#$%. What special interest group is forcing this…
    – Shouldn’t his name be JaMiles NoMorals.
    – Does he speak Spanish or Ebonics?
    – I guess the new villains will be white republicans with jobs.
    – LOL. A crackhead spiderman who steals cars? Cool. Well, it’s different.
    – Makes sense, that’s where all the crime is !
    – Half-black, half-Hispanic = unemployed
    and
    – I can’t believe how latently racist and overtly ignorant this comment section is.

    Post racial socity my ass!
I get that some people don’t want their childhood superhero changed. I hated it when DC rebooted the Legion.
But these people feel that the spiderman change was a subversive plot by liberals and Obama to do something nefarious, like further dilute white culture i guess. Golly ekim, when I visit Eastern Wa for business and look whitey “farmers” straight in the eye they don’t flinch or lose eye contact as we discuss things.

Ah, ButtPutty, of course they don’t flinch or loose eye contact. They are selling you goats at 4 times what they sell to the Mexicans. They are more than happy to take your money.

It is after you’re gone the start laughing.

    Like I said above,

I was at this small golf course in Eastern Washington, sitting in this group of farmers. (All white) One man says as a joke: “I have nothing against *niggers. I think everyone should own one.” The others laughed.

And of course ekim said nothing…

And you are still saying nothing!

BTW bestiality on this site is all your peeps!

Mexicans buy goats for parties. But unlike ButtPutty, Mexicans cook the goats for nice tasty meals.

If you’re invited to a Mexican partiy, be sure to go, but be sure to tell your host how hot you like your food. Some dishes can take your head off.

ButtPutty all unhappy getting called out for his wild goat parties. Too bad, ButtPutty.

ButtPutty protests too much. Of course he fucks the goats. This is well documented on list.

ButtPutty says not true. But ButtPutty never offers proof. ButtPutty guilty. But don’t worry, your secret is safe here.

    Oh my ekim,

You’ve really fallen off the deep end now!

This is well documented on list.

Proving a negative. So ekim prove to everyone you don’t fuck goats or sheep. I went to UD and they have you on record. Check it out! The attached picture was one of your finest they said on UD!

    We’ll wait.

I didn’t see the original post about the racist farmer, but you can find the same statements over here on the west side and you can find plenty of open minded, friendly folks over on the east side of the state.

And WTF’s the deal with every single person in Eastern WA being a farmer and rural? The second largest city in Washington is in Eastern Washington!
