I think 87% is appropriate, because Esser prematurely called McCain the “winner” with less than a 2% lead and 13% of the precincts outstanding. And perhaps even more so, because the dynamics of the Republican Party rules guarantee absolutely nothing to a candidate with 26% to begin with.
And yes, Matty, the state Republicans now claims 96% reporting (same percentage basically as the state Democrats website has at this moment). But the Republicans don’t even break their totals down by county, while the Democrats do.
It would be nice to see the actual attendance figures from both parties. From what I hear, and my best intuition, 250,000 attended the Democratic caucuses, while only 25,000 attended the Republican caucuses. The Republicans had a few areas of relatively high attendance, while the Democrats had a few areas of relatively low attendance.

“Looking at it from the perspective of a businessman, this was an awfully sweet deal for the business,” said Sodd. “Looking at it as a public official, we think it’s lousy policy to use government money to subsidize billionaires in the pursuit of their business interests.”
So Bush the businessman did prosper. But not by his bootstraps — with help from wealthy friends and taxpayer subsidies. ”
That reminds me of today’s news about the campus shooter, where we were reminded that most such shooters really don’t come from nowhere, and their really are plenty of warning signs available if those near to them care to heed them. Similarly, with Bush, there were plenty of warning signs. But why did anybody swallow that “compassionate conservative” or “successful businessman” crap?

In 1992 when I-134 passed, the provision that prevented public financing of elections was hidden in the “small print” and was not the main point of the initiative. Previously, Seattle had been one of the first cities that provided some form of publicly-financed elections in the form of matching funds. It has gone down the memory hole because of I-134.
The new “local option” bill that was passed in this session allows for local CHOICE to finance elections through public monies, it is not a mandate. Additionally, any locality or jurisdiction that wants to finance their elections with public money must pass a popular referendum in order to do so. No state money is involved.
Washington Public Campaigns (washclean.org) has been at the forefront of this battle for years. Go to the website for more information about what makes voter-owned elections the next wave of democratic action on a local level.
Next, voter-owned elections coming to a referedum in Seattle this coming fall. Stay tuned.

B>BREAKING NEWS
Dave Reichert has just announced he will not seek re-election in 2008. Sources say he’s going to retire from congress and return to the King County Sheriffs department as a Deputy Sheriff’.
It’s also being reported that Dave will be assigned to the Special Victims Unit. Dave’s first case will be to identify the body of a local black man, about 6’ 2” tall, goes by the blogger name of Puddybud. Ironically, he was found dead, face down in his bathtub filled with milk, Life cereal, and a banana protruding from his anus. Deputy sheriff Reichert was quoted as saying “It looks as if we have a cereal killer on our hands.”
When asked if there were any suspects in the case, Deputy Dave responded “It must’ve been someone Puddybud knew, someone Puddybud trusted and that someone had to strong enough to hold his head under the milk until he drowned. Most likely a man. A man who could pack a banana in his anus. I will dub the suspect ‘PackMan’.”
More new on this developing case as details emerge.
