    Mass deportations were one of Trump’s most controversial promises. Now, the Trump administration is claiming they have begun, touting deportation flights on military aircraft and ICE’s arrest of more than 500 people on Thursday.

    But deportation flights went out all the time under the Biden administration — all that’s new here is the use of military aircraft. And 500 arrests are, essentially, a normal day for ICE, at or below their daily average during the final year of the Biden administration.

    So why am I hearing about this now? A hallmark of the first Trump administration was the president taking something that was already happening and claiming it was the result of his revolutionary leadership. That seems to be what’s happening here.

    President Trump’s new deportation plan is underway, using military planes to send migrants back to their home countries. These flights cost way more than regular ones used by DHS. For example, a recent flight from Texas to Guatemala cost up to $852,000, while a DHS flight for the same trip is around $8,500.

    I think California should seriously consider adopting a voter ID law in exchange for disaster relief. Think of the advantageous position this puts Democrats in when it’s their turn to demand voting concessions in exchange for disaster aid.

    Trading a voter ID law in one blue state for voting rights, redistricting, and ending voter suppression in two red dozen states is a deal Democrats should take.

    Of course Republicans won’t want to keep up their end of the bargain, but a deal is a deal, and they established the precedent: No voting law changes, no federal money.

For example, local police can write speeding tickets on interstate highways, and states can ban fruit coming from other states.     A recent Ohio Supreme Court decision struck down a state law limiting the length of time a stopped train can block a crossing, ruling the law was not a safety regulation, therefore was preempted. SCOTUS denied cert., but this decision applies only in Ohio.

    A Washington law regulating oil trains is valid because it pertains to the explosion danger from oil vapor, and therefore is a safety regulation.

    Many states, including Washington, have introduced bills to limit train length. These bills often include a time limit on blocking crossings, similar to the Ohio law that was struck down. Whether states can restrict train lengths appears to be in legal limbo for now.
