But I think it’s very important to put that in context when a concern troll like Dumbfuck goes out and recruits someone like James Carville for his messaging.
Carville made a career out of shamelessly miming and appropriating all the culture and mannerisms of Southern Black Democrats to win their trust while stabbing them repeatedly in the back. It worked on an older generation. Maybe still does. But black political leaders today despise him most of all. Trust never even enters into it.
Because Carville’s career was predicated almost entirely on drawing into the coalitions he pursued the older, less educated, white voters now rolling coal flying Trump flags. And he did it more or less in the same way Trump did. By scapegoating. By appealing to white fragility.
But a lot can change in thirty years. Literally millions of the voters Carville reached for in 1992 are now dead. And the generation that came behind them are not burdened by the same crippling prejudices. So concern trolling the same old white fragility and threatening white rage simply does not have the same impact in 2022 as it did in 1992. The world moves on. The rules change. The ground shifts beneath our feet. The old center no longer holds.
The Economist poll has Biden favorability at only 49%, and his strong unfavorables are at 34% while his strong favorables are at only 29%. Meaning a lot of Democrats know they elected a turnip.
