The pardons:
“This threatens the very fabric of our justice system”
Nah. Not really. But it’s bad.
Look, I agree with most of what Devin Stone says about the Trump corruption pardons. They suck. Some merely test the limits of run-of-the-mill political pardons, like Kushner, etc. But the Mueller OSC pardons are indeed different. They challenge the rule of law at the highest level. They describe a system where the President can openly engage in a criminal conspiracy to obstruct and not only escape punishment himself (so far), but also reward those who assisted him by seeing that they also escape punishment.
But they don’t “escape justice”. They all got caught. Including Trump. For all their efforts to conceal their conspiracies, destroy the evidence, and lie again and again and again to law enforcement, they all got caught. Most of the truth came out. And the rest probably will, now that Trump/Rosenstein/Barr can no longer take steps to prevent it.
And we should always remember that the pardon power was written into the constitution specifically because the founders were deeply skeptical of a government empowered to take away freedom. They would be appalled at our modern carceral industrial complex and police state.
That doesn’t mean Trump’s final abuse of democracy should be ignored. But it’s important to put it into perspective before we over react or react in the wrong way. We should embrace pardons more broadly as a society for the tens of thousands who deserve them. But if the GOP chooses to abdicate their Congressional constitutional responsibility to remove a criminal president, and look the other way when he tries to close the deal by releasing his co-conspirators then Democrats and a Democratic President and Attorney General have a further duty. And this goes well beyond “healing”.
Criminally corrupt presidential pardons fundamentally wound the rule of law. “Healing” that involves aggressively investigating and prosecuting that president. It’s crucial. Justice and democracy can’t heal without it. Because it closes the loop hole, corrects the fundamental injustice, and destroys the perverse incentive. Trump is gambling that he can escape justice for his crimes. It must be demonstrated that he can’t.
Liberals, you claim to dislike the GOP, yet you don’t plot to kidnap and kill them… Curious.

The other parties either remain silent, or in the case of Raffensberger and Germany, they specifically object and refuse.
Beyond that, the two provide a valuable service to state officials elsewhere, particularly those in two-party consent states. This puts them on notice, alerts them to the criminal nature of the proposals, and offers them the opportunity to protect themselves from any legal jeopardy that might arise.
Smartest move overall is to decline to take part in any such conversation. Meadows isn’t going to have much authority to persuade awaiting indictment.

There’s a big risk of missing the forest for the trees here.
This is ultimately about an ongoing election challenge lawsuit in Georgia. A lawsuit that is ultimately mooted on Wednesday of this week. So we should all be asking ourselves why go to all this trouble?
The GOP is asking primarily for access to voter registration and ballot data from a bunch of largely African American counties in Georgia. They can’t change the election outcome. But they can do a couple of other things: they can cherry pick the data and manipulate it to discredit procedures in those African American counties, and they can purge hundreds of thousands of African American voters. They want to use this to roll back access to voting, remove voters, and impose changes in election procedures that make it harder for African Americans to vote. And they are not going to stop in Georgia.
Trump being Trump will always make everything about him. But in reality, for the national and state GOP this is 100% about restricting voting rights for The Blacks in future elections, in Georgia and anywhere else they can get away with it. They know their future depends on it. And if Trump can give him the cover they need to do what they need to do and distract Democrats while they are doing it, good for him.
Still leaves me curious about Trump’s future intentions. He’s no “Party Man”. He’s in this for himself. Maybe he just needs this in order to feel better about getting his ass kicked. And maybe GOP election lawyers and officials are just using him in the short term. But that’s not very different from how they approached his candidacy way back in 2015. And look how that turned out.
