    Hey guys. Here’s an interesting little thought experiment I think everyone should try out.

    You know those COVID-19 graphs that are so popular right now? In particular I’m talking about the ones that show a pair of neat sinusoidal curves comparing the effects of the virus on a particular population with and without “stay-at-home” orders. The ones everyone popularized with the phrase “flattening the curve”. Go take a look at your favorite right now if you like. I can wait. In the mean time, here’s my favorite:

    Now that you’ve had a chance to look at those curves and maybe even play around with them for a minute or two here’s the thing to think about: What is the difference between the two outcomes in practical terms? What is going on in the two scenarios that makes the difference?

    In our present circumstances it’s people staying home, right? We all get that now, even if it obviously took a little while for it to sink in with some. When people stay home it reduces what epidemiologists call the “basic reproduction number” Ro, of the pandemic. And that is what flattens the curve.

    Now go back for just a sec and look at the curves again. Notice the area under the curve in each scenario. Do you know what that is? Do you know what that area represents? Well, it literally represents people who are infected (or hospitalized, or dead, depending on what you are measuring). People. People just like us, but hopefully not us. Right?

    Now here’s the fun part.
    What is the difference between those two areas under the curve in terms of people? Well, though we don’t talk about it at all right now, it isn’t hard to answer really. The difference is people who can stay home and people who can’t (or won’t). That’s the practical difference between the two models represented by those curves. So that’s the difference between those two populations of people represented by the area under the curves.

    The “stay-at-home” orders reduce the Ro and in so doing they protect some people from becoming infected. But that protection ultimately will not be shared equally. For people whose employers don’t let them stay home, and in many cases it is because their jobs simply cannot be performed from home, there is no protection provided by the intervention. Essentially, hourly employees and a few salaried, in a huge swath of industries and workplaces are left without the protective benefit of the intervention.

    Yes, some of them are healthcare workers. But at least, for the most part, they are allowed to work with PPE, rigorous cleaning and sanitation, and in an environment that recognizes the risk and takes appropriate measures. All the other job categories, and workplaces are not so fortunate. Retailers and convenience food take out stores that remain open are busier than ever. Amazon, UPS, FedEx are overwhelmed. And they are just the most visible. Basically they and tens of thousands of our friends and neighbors just like them are the people under the “flattened” curve.

    As a society we are making this choice. Most of them are not. Many are not thinking about it much right now. But that will change in the weeks ahead as they watch their co-workers fall ill and disappear, and then the stories trickle back in to the workplace. We as a society are choosing to fuck these people over, making many of them and their family members sick, and killing many of them as well.

    I don’t know if we have a better choice right now. But maybe it wouldn’t fucking kill us to raise minimum wage, to subsidize day care, to make sure they all have access to health care, and to pass a few laws that offered them some simple workplace protections and benefits while the rest of us all attend Zoom meetings from our back yard patio this spring.

    What the fuck do you think happens to all that? A few hundred low wage workers in safety vests, and hard hats with ear plugs (but no masks – ran out sorry!) standing shoulder to shoulder in a recycling center and touching our garbage in order to sort it and decontaminate it. That’s us. We could as utility rate payers decide to take the tiny hit, let them go home and be safe with their families, and just landfill all of it for the next four weeks. But I guess that would “look bad”.

    Just another invisible example. There are literally thousands. And many will get sick and die, or perhaps worse, bring deadly virus home and infect their loved ones. For min wage.

    There is obviously a lot of ethical complexity in such studies involving potentially fatal disease, but also in any medical setting. But even limited clinical trials without placebo controls demand protocols no just for ethical and moral reasons, but for scientific rigor. In almost all of these clinical settings we have no idea how these patients are being chosen for treatment and what other medically relevant factors and comorbidities are involved and not being reported.

    In the case of the clinical trial in France each patient had fairly severe comorbidities (obesity, cancer, HIV). Hopeful idiots are going to conclude without a shred of evidence that this factor somehow prevented or interfered with the treatment. This genie is out of the bottle now. And regardless of whether this stuff is just laetrile, it will be diverted from legitimate medical use, stockpiled, and administered to patients thanks almost entirely to Dr. Stable Genius.

    Again, president Panglossian is rolling the dice here with other people’s lives. He hopes that if enough good sales and marketing material can be pushed out the door touting the new and improved, lemony fresh miracle cure then he can claim to be a “Stable Genius who saved many lives”.     We saw a lot of this during Vietnam, too. The people at the time fucked up, big time, and then tried to shovel the blame down the chain of command. It ended up landing on the troops who reported for induction instead of fleeing to Canada, did what they were told, endured the hardships and made the sacrifices, and then if they were lucky enough to survive, were met with hostility and were blamed for losing the war when they returned home.

    I don’t have a lot of patience with fake warriors. Maybe you can tell. The worst thing about these civilians assholes is they never fly to the battlefield to chew out the troops, who at least got opportunities to shoot at their officers’ helicopters as a sort of compensation for suffering under homicidally incompetent leadership.
