DNC members discuss rules change to stop Sanders at convention
In conversations on the sidelines of a DNC executive committee meeting and in telephone calls and texts in recent days, about a half-dozen members have discussed the possibility of a policy reversal to ensure that so-called superdelegates can vote on the first ballot at the party’s national convention. Such a move would increase the influence of DNC members, members of Congress and other top party officials…

The United States carried out an airstrike in January that killed a leader of Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen after months of tracking him, according to current and former government officials.
Qassim al-Rimi, 41, was killed in the January strike but officials had been waiting to confirm the information before making public statement, the New York Times reports.

There’s an interesting item in this week’s Barrons.
After listing several potential “black swan” (i.e., low probability, but plausible) events that could disrupt financial markets, an analyst was quoted as saying Trump’s supporters see Warren or Sanders as an “existential threat” and wouldn’t rule out a “violent reaction, analogous to secession” in 1860, if Trump loses to a progressive Democrat.
It’s kinda unthinkable, but thoughtful and well-informed finance professionals apparently are thinking it.
Roger Rabbit spews:
There are many reasons why I think hardcore righties are dumbasses. One reason is that, when they prattle about civil war, they seem to assume they’ll do all the shooting and their enemies (i.e., us) will do all the dying. That’s not how civil wars work. Most people don’t consent to being shot. There are always casualties on both sides.
Another reason is because threatening “cival war” and violence if they don’t get their way is childish. They’re people who never grew up. Most people learn accommodation and compromise by third or fourth grade.
Finally (well, not finally; there’s lots more, but I’ll skip the rest), it’s just plain stupid to spend thousands on guns, ammo, prepper gear, and survival supplies that just sit in their basements or garages collecting dust when that money could be invested in dividend-paying stocks so they won’t be so damn poor in their old age.
Maybe they don’t expect to survive to old age. That’s concerning. The guy who should worry you is the one who intends to die for his cause and take you with him.
Or maybe they’re not completely dumb and realize that tearing the country apart wouldn’t be good for stock investments, and don’t want to be in the market when they make that happen. But in that case, money won’t be useful anyway.
Roger Rabbit spews:
I wonder what Cival War Umpire’s current status is? Will MLB do something about him, or don’t they care if an umpire is moonlighting as a domestic terrorist?
Roger Rabbit spews:
I sometimes think about the deceptions Republicans practice. For example, reducing tax withholding without changing tax rates, so people think they’re getting a tax cut when they aren’t. Of course, the resulting smaller refunds (or owing money to the IRS) would provoke howls of protest, but they figured they’d be safely re-elected by then. Was that Bush41 who did that? I don’t remember. I know he wasn’t re-elected in large part because he raised taxes after saying, “Read my lips! No new taxes!” He had to, because Republican voodoo economics is just that, voodoo economics. It doesn’t work. Reagan did, too, for the same reason.
There’s a strong dose of voodoo in Trump’s economic policies, too. Essentially he’s borrowing from the future (or, in Wall Street speak, pulling future growth forward) to goose growth in the short-term, except it’s not working because GDP is slowing, not accelerating.
The best thing to do is not vote for them in the first place.
WTF?! spews:
@29 your comment reminds me of something I was pondering the other day. Basically what I was thinking about was or is the fluctuations in today’s volatile Stock Market, and how the market depends on volatility to make anyone money. Meaning that it has to have very bad days so that investors, or smart investors (such as yourself), can buy low and then have greater gains as the Market perks up. I really think that market is a bit rigged in the sense that it is influenced from the inside and investors just follow the along with what is initiated. And I think any reason, good or bad, is just an excuse to rationalize what is going on there.
For instance the corona virus. I am fully aware of the negative effects on the global economy with this virus, but one day the virus is a problem and then the next day it’s not an issue, or even hours later in the same day,
By the way the virus is getting worse in China, not better, yet anyways. And if it continues I think it will get worse worldwide to the point where all non essential travel will have to be restricted, and not just from and to China.
But back to my thoughts with the Stock Market – what partly made me think about this is that volatility will only get worse in the future, more so than today, due to Climate Change, viruses, wars, as well as other things. And I just felt that it’s not sustainable, if life isn’t sustainable.
WTF?! spews:

Roger Rabbit spews:
@33 “the market depends on volatility to make anyone money”
Actually, this isn’t true. Certainly there are people who profit from trading the swings. But the simplest, easiest, surest, and safest way to make money in stocks — and the method requiring the least expertise and knowledge — is by buying those of well-managed and growing companies, then sitting on them. Numerous academic studies bear this out. Volatility isn’t completely irrelevant; I often wait for market dips to buy stocks, with the obvious aim of getting them at a lower price. But I don’t focus on volatility, I focus on compounding, which is the most powerful investment tool there is, and works in all market conditions. If you reinvest all your dividends and capital gains, compounding will make you a lot of money over time, even if the market doesn’t go up (or down) at all. Warren Buffet understands this; he famously wants stocks to go down, not up, so he can buy them more cheaply.

@34 My guess is there will be massive celebrations in Times Square, outside the White House, in downtown Seattle and other cities, and all over the world — eclipsing when Osama bin Laden was killed — should Trump be defeated. Perhaps reminiscent of V-J Day.

Just imagine if Goldy hadn’t been able to write his pre-election “bullshit polls” piece because someone at Trafalgar didn’t like the result it got.
Either Bernie did really well in this poll, Warren did really poorly, or both. Bernie doing really well, Warren tanking, and the remaining three candidates splitting the votes in a fairly even manner during the caucus would mean Warren’s votes end up going to Bernie, and further amplifying his success.
The DNC wouldn’t like that. CNN needs uncertainty amongst the candidates in the caucus results to ensure that the Bloomberg and Steyer ad money continues to flow.

The latest NBC/WSJ poll doesn’t look so good for Mayor Pete: He would lose to Trump, while Biden continues to be the strongest challenger.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/nbc-wsj-poll-country-remains-divided-over-trump-s-impeachment-n1128326
Roger Rabbit: I think Democrats have to be practical, set aside ideology and their policy aspirations (which they can’t enact anyway if McConnell retains the Senate gavel), and nominate the candidate with the best odds of beating Trump. In the polls, that’s consistently been Biden. While most polls until now have shown all the top Democratic contenders leading over Trump, I strongly suspect the polls undercount Trump’s voters because at least some of them are lying to pollsters. Now add in voter suppression, fabricated smears, and all the other lowdown dirty tricks Republicans will deploy to thwart “the people” — who, just last week, were proclaimed to be the proper authority to decide Trump’s fate — and you end up with the Democratic candidate needing an extra 5 or 6 percentage points just to offset the unleveling of the playing field. Democrats need to go into this with their eyes wide open: It’s going to be like playing football against 11 guys armed with knives, baseball bats, and brass knuckles, with no referees on the field calling out their unsportsmanlike conduct.

Warren- 2%
Klobuchar-.5%
The rest were less than .01 percent, so they stopped there.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@57 It doesn’t appear you scrolled down to the fine print, so let me help you with that:
“When the poll narrows the matchup to include only respondents from 11 battleground states — Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — Biden’s lead over Trump is 5 points, 49 percent to 44 percent.”
Shoot from the lip, look like a fool.
@godwinha spews:
@ 60
Little better. It’s a blend of states that will have varied results.
If Trump takes FL by 1% it exceeds the electoral votes Biden would take by winning Maine, New Hampshire, and Nevada by 10%.
You’re a clown, Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit.
Again, Fucking Moron II, do not fall for his bullshit.
Roger Rabbit spews:
This reinforces my point @56 — directed to my fellow liberals, not you, dumbfuck — that my Party of Truth, Honesty, and American Patriotism will need that 5-point spread which Biden (and nobody else) has in the battleground states that our resident Trump spokesperson keeps banging his shoe on the table about. As he says — and this certainly is not his original idea — the national spread doesn’t matter. Or, at least, not nearly as much. We should thank him for reminding us that a nominee who loses those states will lose the election, and temper our individual yearnings accordingly. However much the Democratic base may like Warren or Sanders, they need to shoot straight down the middle this time, or they’ll court disaster in November. Trump has an unshakable 42%, which may be as high as 47% or 48%, so there’s no extra margin of swing votes in that handful of states. That’s my opinion.
@godwinha spews:
There is some redeeming value @ 60 to Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit’s lame effort to rally Dem support.
Look at the list of “battleground states”.
Where’s Ohio? Iowa? These are no longer battleground states. They are red states.
Why is Minnesota a battleground state this year? Because The Chardonnay Lady 2.0 carried MN by only 0.5%. It’s a battleground state because it’s in danger of going red. Serious danger.
Arizona? Hillary made that mistake in 2016, thinking it was within reach. It won’t be within reach this year, either.
Finally, it’s nice to see that Texas isn’t being considered as within reach for Democrats this year. Let’s not waste time talking about how Texas might turn blue for Trump’s opponent in 2020. Y’all are going after guns. That comes at a price, and for quite awhile that price is the Lone Star State’s electoral votes.

Your Orange Duce needs 270 EVs, dumbfuck. He can’t lose more than 34 of the ones he won in 2016. Florida is 29 of those. Clinton won the other states you mention, which are likely to remain blue. You’re looking in the wrong place. Figure out what happens if the Democrat flips Wisconsin and Michigan, or substitute Arizona for one of those, and either Pennsylvania or Ohio, then get back to us with your revised projections.
Of course, if he does lose Florida, then he can’t afford to lose any other state he won in 2016, unless it’s an unpopulated Siberia like West Virginia or the Dakotas, assuming the Democrats keep all of theirs.
Would you like to take a stab at identifying a 2016 blue state you think Trump can flip in 2020?

Hey, I’m not saying Trump won’t win. He surely can. I’m worried about my country, and not just for that reason, but in broader strokes. Too many people like you in it.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
49,
My only prediction is that both Warren and Sanders will probably over perform with respect to the latest Iowa polls. Thus the outcome may be quite a bit closer than some might have guessed.
But it bears remembering for any “diehard Trump supporter” that things like Huckabee happen in Iowa too. So whatever the polling results might be, and however well they might have predicted “preference”, many Iowa precinct delegate equivalents will be rewarded based upon realignment following the initial preference count.
And since each precinct essentially represents a given number of state delegate equivalents, how many delegates any candidate receives will also be determined by how well distributed their support is. Winning all the delegate equivalents from any one precinct is good. Running up the score may not be. Because Iowa goes first, and follows this process, some campaigns (particularly trailing campaigns) have sought to run up the score in select precincts as a way of making a case for their candidate, despite in the end not earning very many delegates.
Probably each of the three or four campaigns finishing with the most delegates will declare the result a success that is a mandate for broad support of their candidate. Until the next primary result. I don’t expect to see much shaking out among those top campaigns until after March. Even if one of the poll leading campaigns were to somehow finish out of the top three or four, or worse out of the money, at most that means a reshuffling of the staff and resources.
@godwinha spews:
@ 17
From this I take it that you believe Warren starts at 15+%.
Why do you think that both of them will overperform?
Roger Rabbit spews:

History has also taught us what can happen when you remove the restraints from somebody who demonizes, scapegoats, and talks about “locking up” and “shooting” people in his speeches.
The thing is, dumbfuck, you won’t be exempt if that’s where this ultimately goes. Hitler went after his fellow Nazis before going after the general population; Stalin went after his fellow communists before going after ordinary citizens. Cleansing the party of independent thinkers — and you’re clearly one — is a necessary step in the process of seizing absolute power.
Trump likes power, doesn’t like to share, and we’ve already seen how he rewards your kind of loyalty. And while I’m low to the ground, you stick out like a sore thumb on your high horse. His minions will notice you before they see me. Your years of shilling for him on an obscure liberal blog will county for nothing. All they’ll pay attention to is that you’ve been keeping company with liberals.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
56,
I don’t really think there’s ever been strong evidence that people lie in properly designed and conducted independent telephone polls enough to overcome well designed weighting. But certainly not all polls are well designed or well conducted, nor are all weighting factors.
But I do think there is a pretty significant tendency for respondents to over represent their engagement with either issues or candidates or both. And all other things being equal (they never are) that probably introduces more uncertainty for incumbent candidates. What I mean is that at an early point, some relatively disengaged respondents could gravitate towards name recognition (which is always highest for incumbents) and then over represent their support for that candidate as a way of signaling their good citizenship/engagement/virtue/etc. As time passes that level of support indicated in polls can either soften or harden depending quite a bit on whatever “new information” voters modeled by these relatively disengaged respondents learn about the candidates. Longitudinal polls (polls that sample the same respondents over time) are probably unable to capture this effect. Because we know that once a particular respondent indicates support for a candidate or an issue position they will strongly tend to maintain that in subsequent measures for nothing more than consistency.
This could have dire consequences for an incumbent like president Republican RapeHero. If a “diehard Trump supporter” like bot-farm has been willing of late to abandon consistency with his previous commitments, then it is certainly possible that large numbers of disengaged voters who might have indicated support for RapeHero could just as easily decide to stay home this November. In states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin that would produce a disaster for Republicans.

72,
So I guess you meant to type 71? Get that tremor looked at. It could be something serious. Whatever it was, it probably killed Puddy.
If we pretend there’s 100 people attending an imaginary “average” Iowa caucus, do I think that at the beginning of Monday night 15 of them (again, on average) would align with Warren? Does not seem unreasonable at all. Polls are bad at this. Pollsters get mad at Iowa for this reason. The media love it because “unexpected, dramatic” shit can happen. But starting right out, the number of “unaligned” measured in earlier polls is almost always much higher than what is actually seen on Monday night. Many people wait until the last minute to decide or to commit. Who they are, how they break, is a tough thing to predict. But probably some of them break to the leading candidates.
Beyond that, and as far as “over performing”, there’s the fact that most of the recent polls play some fairly stupid games with “likely voter” measure. Not a few will toss responses from anyone who did not participate in either of the last two cycles. Turns out that has caused some big errors in recent Iowa primary polling by discounting engagement among less frequent voters. Adding to that picture is lots of strong evidence that engagement has continued to grow during the last mid term and off years. So campaigns that have pursued a retail strategy of micro-targeting individual voters based upon on their data profiles are automatically better situated to reach “new” and “less historically engaged” voters not being measured in the polls.

As far as I’m concerned it’s all good.
Bloomberg is not on track or even in closing position. And it takes more than money and ad buys. But even if his real intention is to win the nomination (and I think that’s very debatable) his presence throughout the primary running as a Democrat, and focusing almost his entire message on attacking the Republican Party, Senate Republicans, and the Republican RapeHero is to the good of all Americans, including the other campaigns and the eventual Democratic nominee.
Until now, there has been essentially no well funded national messaging campaign to directly challenge the RapeHero narrative. The media is stuck permanently in the both-siderist waiting room. The DNC is sidelined until the convention. Bloomberg can rent space in RapeHero’s head and he has the money to do it.

Kerry-Clinton 2020.
Or would it be Clinton-Kerry 2020?
John Kerry overheard discussing possible 2020 bid amid concern of ‘Sanders taking down the Democratic Party’
DES MOINES, Iowa — Former Secretary of State John Kerry — one of Joe Biden’s highest-profile endorsers — was overheard Sunday on the phone at a Des Moines hotel explaining what he would have to do to enter the presidential race amid “the possibility of Bernie Sanders taking down the Democratic Party — down whole.”
Sitting in the lobby restaurant of the Renaissance Savery hotel, Kerry was overheard by an NBC News analyst saying “maybe I’m f—ing deluding myself here” and explaining that to run, he’d have to step down from the board of Bank of America and give up his ability to make paid speeches. Kerry said donors like venture capitalist Doug Hickey would have to “raise a couple of million,” adding that such donors “now have the reality of Bernie.”
Asked about the call later Sunday, Kerry said he was “absolutely not” contemplating joining the Democratic primary race. He reiterated the sentiment in a tweet later, saying “any report otherwise is f—ing (or categorically) false.” Minutes later, he deleted the tweet and reposted it without the expletive.

It doesn’t personally cost him a penny, because he’s just pay money to the IRS that he’s giving to charity (and presumably wouldn’t continue giving it to charity, because you can’t spend the same dollar more than once). No tax on wealth, only income, and only a piddling “5% surtax” at that. The billionaires will dance in the streets when they see this. But it will hit the dividends paid to middle class owners of stocks, IRAs, and 401(k)s, because a lot of that corporate tax cut money went to raising dividends — companies sure as hell didn’t use it for business investment or creating more jobs. Bloomberg is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

But it won’t happen. It’s no more possible for GOP senators to vote for censure than removal without enraging their voters. I don’t believe there would be a single GOP vote for censure — not Collins, Murkowski, Alexander, Gardner, not any of them. Because they’re all moral cowards. And it’s precisely for this reason that Democrats should push for censure: To put Republicans on record as being unable to defend the Constitution or democracy, so our citizens who aren’t hopelessly brainwashed will know exactly where they stand if they recklessly vote for Republicans.
