    When all is said and done, I don’t think people go to war, (real war) over whether or not they get to tell racist jokes about Tiger Woods around the company water cooler.

    Straight, aging, white men living in North America may finally be having to get used to surrendering a tiny bit of their privilege. But they still enjoy a life of unprecedented freedom, prosperity, and opportunity regardless of who wins what election. And the outcome of any election will never alter the things they are really frustrated by: hair loss, erectile dysfunction, loss of mobility and strength, and the inevitability of aging into a period of life where nobody pay much attention to you anymore – not your boss, not your co-workers, not the marketplace (other than the makers of dick pills and investments), not the “hot barista”, and probably not even your spouse.

    But in my opinion those just aren’t the kinds of things that move large numbers of people toward the kind of peril and self-sacrifice that inevitably accompany real warfare. Don’t get me wrong. I agree we are probably heading into an increasingly dangerous time. But calling it “civil war” is just the GOP valorizing something far more cowardly, desperate, and depressing. More suicides and more domestic terrorism coming from the GOP. But that’s been trending since the 1980s.

I’m confident the Republicans like Teh Dumbfuck will continue to turn the page to a new excuse as soon as whatever current excuse is swept aside by the tide of incriminating testimony and documents.* And they’ll never run out. But the excuses they turn to will become increasingly bizarre and irrational. And as I’ve pointed out so many times before, the adoption of bizarre and irrational beliefs has a damaging effect on those who do it, making them increasingly unable to observe, contemplate, and react to objective reality.

I suppose next up will be the “extortion/bribery is business-as-usual” excuse that’s been in beta test for about a week now. Somehow before this is over we will reach a point where the majority of Senate Republicans will be arguing that criminality and abuse of office is simply how they intend to do things going forward. And their base will adopt that as well. But I’m not convinced that most Americans will be comfortable with that in the end.

    Was Trump’s tweet blasting Yovanovitch while she was testifying before Congress a prosecutable act of witness tampering? There are arguments pro and con.

    Trump claims he has an “absolute right” to recall ambassadors. That’s true, but irrelevant. Yovanovitch was recalled months ago and is not an ambassador today.

    Trump also claims he was exercising his “free speech” rights. He has such rights, of course, but the First Amendment doesn’t protect all speech, and courts have ruled that witness intimidation or tampering is “corrupt speech” outside the First Amendment’s protections and can be prosecuted.

    But the whole question of whether Trump committed a crime by tweeting about Yovanovitch in the manner he did is a red herring, because a presidential act doesn’t have to be a crime to constitute an impeachable offense.

    Clearly, this could (and likely will) be viewed by Democrats as another effort by Trump to obstruct and hinder the House investigation into his corrupt activities involving Ukraine.

    And as he’s certainly going to be impeached for obstruction anyway, what’s he got to lose?
