    So the police officer who choked Eric Garner to death five years ago was fired this week. An obviously very lengthy process examining his actions by multiple agencies and jurisdictions ultimately determined that at the time the officer choked Mr. Garner to death during a misdemeanor arrest for selling cigarettes on the street, a department-wide ban was in effect prohibiting the type of choke hold the officer employed. The agencies and jurisdictions further determined that the officer was fully aware of the ban, aware that the reason for the ban was because of an exceptional risk of death, and proceeded to intentionally employ the prohibited choke hold in violation of the ban with reckless disregard for any consequences. So he was fired for recklessly refusing to abide by binding workplace regulations that he understood and that resulted in the death of a suspect in custody.

    In response, New York’s largest police union is calling for an organized (albeit highly illegal) work slow down in which officers will refrain from making certain kinds of arrests for minor offenses. The threat implicit in the call for a work slow down is that the city would descend into chaos and mayhem if police stop arresting “suspicious types” for petty shit like selling cigarettes, double parking, or smoking in a bus shelter.

    But we’ve seen this movie before. And it doesn’t end like that at all.
