    I can see why the AG did not want to testify before the staff counsel’s of the committee. 30 minutes is harder to out-talk than 5 minutes per Comgressmember. Then again, the committee counsel’s sometimes ask the toughest questions, like the Watergate tapes.

    One side effect of the upcoming discontinuance of Amtrak’s Hoosier State service, fears of job cuts at Amtrak’s shop in Beech Grove. It runs between Indianapolis and Chicago, and under a 2008 law, Amrak can’t fund it. Personally, the Hoosier State should have been replaced by a Daily Cardinal, and the issue of how to get coaches and locomotives to Beech Grove for repair would be moot. Barring that, Indiana should have negotiated for something better.

    Did some checking, both mayors are Democrats (As an excluded city in the Indianapolis/Marion County unified government, Beech Grove has some autonomy, with it’s own mayor qnd council, as well as the ability to vote for Mayor of Indianapolis and the city-county council), but their State rep is a Republican. Also, on some advocacy pages on Facebook,that supposedly the Beech Grove mayor may not have liked the shop in the past, plus the current Amtrak CEO came from Delta Airlines, probably not used to facilities like Beech Grove, Willmington, and Bear.

    In this video, an interesting side note. The Wisconsin Talgos survived Walker. At roughly 0:57 into the video, the locomotive being shunted around the shop, the two trainsets are on the track behind them. With the push from Minnesota for a second Twin Cities-Milwaukee-Chicago service, and the new Governor in Wisconsin, They may end up being used after all.

    There’s a lot of speculation right now about whether the allegedly “strong” economy is enough to reelect Trump, who seems to think he can get away with anything if he puts a few dollars in the suckers’ pockets. But, as the ouster of conservative cult leaders like Brownback and Walker illustrates, voters know a con job when they see one. They’ll put up with a certain amount of b.s. in return for results, but that has limits. It’s too late to turn back the clock on racial integration; too many people live in mixed-race neighborhoods now, have neighbors of different colors and cultures, and have learned from living next door to them that they’re perfectly okay. And cozying up to the likes of Putin and Kim Jong Un doesn’t sell well even in red precincts; there are still plenty of Korean and Vietnam veterans around, and families who lost relatives fighting the “Evil Empire” in those wars. To them, Trump must look like a madman, or at least like an infantry colonel about to give a hill back to the enemy their buddies just shed blood for — it’s inexplicable, senseless, they can’t make head or tails of it. When you drill down into it, 2020 won’t be about the economy, no matter how good it may seem on the surface (the fact it’s not that great underneath also is a problem for the GOP); 2020 will boil down to “what the hell is going on?” and “what is happening to America?” and people will pull the lever to go back to the way things were, not in 1875 or 1975, but in 2015. The silent majority will think, “make Trump go away, and things won’t be perfect, but will be all right.”

    These arbitration “agreements” in employment contracts need to be outlawed. There’s nothing voluntary about them; you either sign it or don’t get the job.     Not in New York State. Since 2018 NY invalidates mandatory arbitration clauses in employment disputes involving claims of discrimination. Also removed NDAs unless requested by the employee. So they may have to go throgh the motions. But once arbitration is complete they are free to re-file. UHC must then challenge under the Federal Arbitration Act. This might not be a good case for that. Which thus creates incentive for UHC to bargain in good faith through arbitration. And opens the door for the plaintiff to use the record of arbitration against UHC.

    The camp conducted an ID check and limited background check when he arrived there, but not a thorough criminal history check that would have revealed he had a conviction record in another state (Texas). Suppose they had, and had turned him away, how would that have prevented the rape?

    It wouldn’t have. He would’ve been on the streets, he would’ve gone to the car dealership, he would’ve attacked the victim anyway. Don’t blame the homeless camp for failing to prevent this crime; they couldn’t have prevented it.

    As for the victim, the suspect was caught, has been charged, and if he’s convicted he’s likely going to be locked up for a long time, especially given his prior record. What more do <i<you want from this? Other than leaving out these details in order to score cheap talking points in your anti-homeless rant.

    If people are homeless, they’re going to be somewhere. They don’t just evaporate. Do you want them in some sort of supervised setting or just wandering the streets? Don’t knock the efforts of those trying to provide safe and supervised places for these people. However much these camps may fall short of some sort of ideal, they’re better than nothing.
