    Railfan, I know how excited you get about railroads and trains, I share your excitement. But I am having a bad experience on Amtrak. Going to have to contact them and tell them that I don’t think I’ll ever take a ride on thier trains again, and I suggest that they go out of business.

    I understand that they don’t own the lines, they lease them, but if they can’t get a better lease condition from the rail owners then they mine as well give up or start building thier own lines.

    They’ve had to break out the snacks for free to keep us happy while we waited an hour. After a second attempt to break out the free snacks, I told them to keep thier free snacks, because If I keep eating thier free snacks I’ll be 350 lbs before I get off this train.

    I would like nothing more than for Amtrak to be better including more funding, but at this point they should consider giving up and going out of business.

    The reality is, that the airline and aircraft building companies have spent decades perfecting their control of the long distance transportation market, and the laws that they’ve lobbied bribed Congress to pass all but prohibit government funds to go to non-airline transportation. That attitude is now biting us in the ass. The current GOP/NeoCon majority that holds our national legislature is absolutely opposed to all public rail transportation except for freight.

    When airlines stop being subsidized and forced to compete on the open market, or passenger rail is subsidized to the same level that the airlines are, that would change. Rail is much, much less expensive to operate over the long term, and more efficient for mass transportation of people.

    Hell, Japan managed to build one of the most comprehensive passenger rail systems in the world in a period when they were still paying off reparations and rebuilding from the second world war. We can do the same here. All it takes is the will. The money already exists.

    I bet who ever runs Amtrak gets a whopping salary, and isn’t being held accountable for improving the system however that may be for the people that use it and the tax payers that pay for it, and the employees that look at it as an income source, instead of happily sitting and doing the status quo. He is doing a dis-service to everyone, by not doing so. I bet he could give two shits about an over due train by 3 hours, on a journey that was probably 3 hours too long to begin with compared to by going by car.

    Not sure if he and the government need to come to a better agreement on the terms of thier agreement withe lease of the lines or other solutions but sitting here thinking everything is great because the northeast corridor lines are fairly descent and profitable isn’t the reason to sit there and think things are great.

    I just had another shitty long trip adventure that had many issues. And when you ssk, the response is, well, we don’t own the tracks. Well how about other solutions and or starting to own the tracks. It can’t be status quo, “oh well, we don’t own the tracks”.

    As for Amtrak, there is an interesting experiment with the Hoosier State . Amtrak providing the engineers and conductors, and it’s right of access, Iowa Pacific providing equipment and on board services. Being a smaller operation, Iowa Pacific is doing something Amtrak and the state of Indiana never did, seek out passengers!

    @3 Sounds like you are sitting on a side track somewhere waiting for another train. Anything interesting about those other trains? Lots of tanker cars? Is it the weather. Sorry it’s just that time of the year for snow, ice, ect it’s February. Are you talking about the general condition of the tracks? This is an issue that has been around for a couple of decades and the main reason we don’t have high speed trains (passenger or otherwise). We need to redo a lot of track to have high speed rail. This will involve public funds to happen as commercial interests aren’t going to fix what aint broke. Freight doesn’t care if the ride is bumpy, jerky ect or if it sits at some sideline for a couple of days or months.

    Meanwhile there are detractors of Amtrak who want you never to take a train again and they want Amtrak sold off and they will happily take the part that makes money. Mainly the east coast lines up and down the coast, and scrap the rest. They would do this with the post office. They manage to do it with cell phones or fiber optics which are purely commercial entities. If your in Seattle just maybe you will get fiber to your house. If your in Enumclaw or Snohomish it might happen in your great great great childrens lifetimes. Odd how areas of the country where there is a low population has no cell phone reception except where there is a major highway.
    These are areas where pure Capitalism doesn’t address very well. unless you like being someone out of yester year in the great frontier.

    @4 The fact Japan and Europe had to rebuild infrastructure after WWII was an advantage that paid dividends later. It was not just in rail transportation the destruction of war gave them a leg up. It was also true in communications. The had to put in new phone switches and those were not the Stroger type of switches here in America, they were able to integrate the digital renaissance coming out of Bell labs that Bell wasn’t using in the states because the system wasn’t broke so why fix it attitude.
    So out of the ashes good things came to Japan and Europe and they are still ahead of us in the United States because of the ashes. Yet I don’t know if we want to achieve what they achieved out of the necessity.

    @10 When the tracks and stations in the area of the Twin Towers are affected or the tracks damaged or destroyed it’s going to affect the subway system throughout New York city, but that doesn’t close down all other train traffic in the five burroughs.

    All aircraft except military aircraft over the US were grounded. This was an overreaction as if there had been another plane taen over by terroists it would have been in the air, and probably on approach to their terminal destination. The only option open to the US government would have been a shoot down which could have been done on any of those airliner if a National Guard fighter had gotten a missile homed on the aircraft. Which would not have been a good political outcome. So were the aircraft grounded because of a credible threat or were they grounded to avoid the potential political backlash of having to splash a civilian airliner? Which should have happened to the 2nd aircraft that went into the twin towers and the two other aircraft or were those guard pilots ordered not to fire?

    @67 – yes pretty much rail traffic. I took a round trip form NYC to New Orleans, on the 19 going down and the 20 coming back. Left on Friday @ 2:15pm. The ride going down was pretty much uneventful, other than being a 30 hour trip – we stopped one time, announced, for about 20 minutes to allow freight to go buy, a little after DC or just after getting into Virginia. Like I said the rest of the trip was pretty uneventful. I really didn’t sleep, but I don’t recall anymore stoppages or interruptions. And I really didn’t see any passing freight traffic when did make that one stop, except quite a few commuter rail went by on track close by but not adjacent to our tracks, maybe further up they shared the same tracks – I don’t know. It was actually a great ride because the train didn’t fill up to much and I had two seats to myself to spread out the whole trip. As we got into Virginia area, less rural areas, it was later at night, an not many people boarded for destinations further south.

    The return trip was the nightmare…..we left New Orleans a 7am on Friday morning. We didn’t get more than an hour or 2 out from New Orleans, and we stopped for a minimum of 1/2 hour. I don’t recall seeing any traffic pass by us, but I think freight did go by. Then at time we had more stoppages for the same reasons. At times we would wait 20 minutes before the freight traffic actually passed us, and then waited a good 5 minutes to 10 minutes after it passing. Before we reached Atlanta, I think we were actually 1 1/2 hours late. Then somewhere in the woods of Virgina, just before the Charlottesville, around 9 am Saturday morning, I awoke to pretty much another sleepless night, to the train going about 5 mph for about 10-20 minutes, before coming to a complete stop, where we stood idle for about 1/2 hour. No announcement to why we stopped…but looking out the window I see a backhoe squeeze between us and the embankment, he goes back and forth a couple of times, no other men, no materials, but a dirty bucket. I asked why were we stopped and nobody kind of wanted to offer any information, until i persisted, then I find out that they were making an emergency repair on the tracks. Before that, just after waiting idle for the 1/2 hour the train moved but it went about 200 feet then stopped. I don’t know what that was all about….why did we sit for 1/2 hour then move for about 2 minutes, only to stop again and wait, until finally everything was all set. This set us back maybe another hour. After I asked what was going on, the crew got nervous, to try to right us they started giving out free snacks.

    One of the crew said, that it could have been worse and that he was surprised that they got started back as quick as we did. All I could envision was that we were stuck there for hours, the toilets overflowing and a revolt happening. I have to say, the people that ride Amtrak are pretty understanding, people were a little upset, but they could really care less.

    Then as we get to two stops after that, around Manassas, we stop again (I think it was manassas), we are about 1-2 miles from the station, I’m using my mapquest on my phone with gps. About 15-20 minutes, freight goes by us, and then we don’t move for another 5 minutes, as we pull into the station, another amtrack train pulls in….at this point Im pissed, I asked is that other amtrak train going ahead of us….why not, we are already 2 hours and more now late. But we leave first. They were about to break out the free snacks again.

    With some other minor delays, we arrive in new york city 3 hours later than scheduled, a 33 hour trip.

    I’ve traveled Amtrak before and had similar problems, but I don’t like to fly, so I figured I’d give it another try. Well, I think Amtrak may have cured me of my fear of flying.

    As soon as I get some time I will be writing them. I’m not looking to get anything free, including any fattening snacks. I merely want to tell them that if they don’t improve, then they aren’t doing anyone a favor. The biggest loser will be their employees.

    oh and what should be a 30 hour train ride, that turned into 33 hours, is only an 18 hour car ride. I was going to drive it but figured id take the train….it was for business, and 1 day of pleasure. I was thinking of driving because i was going to visit a friend in Atlanta. I guess I should have done that instead.

    Actually the ride down wasn’t bad. When we got to Atlanta I said to myself that I’d rather take the train than drive next time I visit my friend….but not sure about that anymore.

    When it comes to station staff, PDX, King Street Station, and Vancouver BC seem to have customer service in mind, with Vancouver BC being the friendliest. The latter is probably due to Amtrak providing twice daily service, while VIA Rail only runs two-three days a week. Portland, on my last trip, the station staff did something interesting. I checked my bag early, because I was doing some last minute exploring before I came home. My suitcase was in Seattle before I was, turned out they sent it to Seattle on an earlier train. Probably because I paid for a business class seat upgrade.
