Comedian John Fugelsang perhaps best described the way modern society would look at Jesus if he appeared among us today the way he is described in the New Testament. He said:
“Jesus was a radical nonviolent revolutionary who hung around with lepers, hookers and crooks; wasn’t American and never spoke English; was anti-wealth, anti-death penalty, anti-public prayer; but was never anti-gay, never mentioned abortion or birth control, never called the poor lazy, never justified torture, never fought for tax cuts for the wealthiest Nazarenes, never asked a leper for a co-pay; and was a long-haired brown-skinned homeless community-organizing anti-slut-shaming Middle Eastern Jew.”
That’s the Jesus I believe in. Not that god of the conservatives, who is pretty much the polar opposite of all those qualities, a religious overlay of Ayn Rand.

It really looks like the right is planning to make Lewinsky a campaign issue. I guess that was to be expected, given the foreign policy incompetence of their party and candidates, and the unpopularity of their positions on abortion, the economy, taxes, Social Security and Medicare, etc.

This is why we should retain the death penalty in this country.* It should be used sparingly, and only for heinous crimes where guilt is not in doubt, but some crimes cry out for ultimate justice.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@9 Pop Rabbit was a reporter for nearly 40 years, and spent most of his career with a major midwestern newspaper. He covered the local government beat, and he was an old-school journalist who exposed corrupt politicians, reported campaigns and elections objectively, etc. He never had yard signs on his lawn or bumper stickers on his car, and didn’t let his kids associate his name with their youthful political activities. When he retired in the late ’70s, he told me things were changing in the news business, in ways he didn’t like, and he was glad to be getting out of the business. So, even back then, partisan bias in news reporting was becoming a problem. It has only gotten worse over time.
Of course, nearly all the owners of newspapers and TV stations are rich white guys, and the so-called “liberal-biased media” is and always has been a laughable myth. Just look at our own local rag — the Seattle Times — as an example. But needless to say this doesn’t stop rightwing propaganda shops from ginning up a phony “liberal media” myth to discredit news reports that don’t kowtow to Republican interests as much as they’d like, e.g., as when a news story mentions “climate change” as something that might actually be happening.
Just last month, Sheldon Adelson, an odious gambling magnate and, along with the Koch brothers, the biggest bankroller of reactionary causes of them all, bought the Las Vegas newspaper. His first act as new owner was to assign three reporters full-time to digging up dirt on the judge presiding over lawsuits against him because she made rulings he didn’t like. This is abuse of media power at its worst, but unfortunately, is all too typical of how rightwing billionaire control of America’s media is being used today.
Fortunately, the rise of the internet has given us an alternative to the traditional billionaire-controlled media, and the entry barriers are so low that anyone, even schoolkids, can disseminate information and news on the internet. Of nearly equal importance is the advent of cheap and ubiquitous cellphones with video recording capabilities, and the existence of YouTube and other internet platforms for the dissemination of videos. These developments turn virtually every person into a news reporter, and undercuts the ability of wealthy and powerful interests to control the flow of news and information.
Here in Seattle, it also helps that for over 10 years now Goldy’s blog has provided a venue for the truthful and objective reporting of local political news, and for debunking rightwing lies, such as the propaganda formerly disseminated by Stefan’s now-defunct sucky little blog. In the end, truth prevails; HA is thriving more than ever while (u)SP lies under the sod, unloved and unmourned, dead and buried in an unmarked grave.

I just got the February 2016 electronic edition(print goes on sale next month) of TRAINS Magazine, and the cover story is about the construction and installation of Continuously Welded Rail. Something interesting I learned, besides sourcing some from domestic sources(three US mills, ArcelorMittal Steelton Works, Steelton, PA, Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel, Pueblo, CO(once owned by Colorado Fuel and Iron), and a new player, Steel Dynamics, Columbia City, Indiana), Union Pacific is buying some rail from a mill in Japan. Two, maybe all three of the domestic suppliers use Electric Arc Furnaces, which work with scrap iron, while it was mentioned that foreign mills tend to be of the integrated type, which use raw iron ore. On a lighter note, the name of the ship that hauls the rail from Nippon Steel to the Port of Stockton, the Pacific Spike.
Willy Vomit spews:
@ ER
This is how that’s done. The rail segments are really about 60 feet long, and welded on site. They’ve been doing huge improvements on signals and all new rail up in my area and the work has been mostly continuous for the last few years. They’ve added a third siding line that is about 3 miles long up along the Custer segment and the turnaround/offload loop at the BP refinery is getting a lot of new work done to it.
They still think they’re going to build a coal terminal but that idea is all but dead. The local folks found out that it was going to be an almost entirely automated switching control system with the control office in Kansas or some shit. So any local jobs that are being promised are most certainly bullshit.

Was back home visiting with family and friends. My buddy, a mis guided Republican, said he likes Trump. I really don’t get it.
Well we talked a little about politics. As we walked to our cars in the parking lot separated by a few spots, He said to me that although we disagree in politics that he still loved me, and then he walked towards me and said to me “give me a hug”, so we hugged. He knows I’m gay – he has a beautiful wife and two great kids. He use to start on his college football team and held or holds the title of top wrestler in high school in the state he grew up. I told him I loved him too.
But I really worry that politics is pulling us further apart. We have to do something in this country before it gets to ugly.

George Will better check in with the racist Republicans out there, they are drooling about this guy. Will may be correct but what he might be wrong about is that that the majority of “Republicans” will vote for him…..and if Trump and the rest of the Republicans can brain wash their fools into the frenzy that Hillary is evil, then he just may win the Presidency.
The Republican’s if they knew any better (which they don’t) would stick with the issues and run Trump out of the race before the start attacking Hillary.
My friend that I mentioned above, said he likes Trump and is voting for him because he’s not voting for Hillary. He didn’t say Bernie or a Democrat. He said Hillary. I think if he said he’s voting Republican over a Democrat, then I wouldn’t feel like this is not necessarily going to end up being a vote for Trump but against Hillary – and Trump can thank his opponents running against him for that, they are doing all the work for him.
