    Even if Rubio can negotiate a truce with Univision, make a post convention turn toward the Latino vote, and carry his home state (three very big ifs) it leaves him incredibly weakened. Right now he has zero ground game in swings other than FL. And he would be potentially trading a high turnout population for a low turnout one. And he begins his GOTV march in the other swings on his heels. Bush isn’t letting go of any donors or PACs yet, nor is he likely to before spring.
    Rubio’s path to 270 is very unclear and ultimately will depend upon him winning over his natural enemies in key swings in a matter of a few months. Despite Boob’s girlish enthusiasm Rubio hasn’t demonstrated that kind of charisma so far.

    Roger Rabbit Commentary: So much for Boob’s meme that paying civilized wages is running the industry into the ground. Number one, restaurants aren’t paying civilized wages, and number two, restaurants aren’t being forced out of business.

    The issue with on-call scheduling, of course, is that workers can’t take a second job to make ends meet if their employers aren’t giving them enough hours. Being on call essentially means the employer has a claim on that time but doesn’t have to pay the worker anything for it. That needs to change. The law should require employers to pay workers some sort of compensation workers for unused on-call time, because that’s time workers can’t sell to another employer.

    Businessmen are used to hearing and using the expression, “time is money,” so they should be able to understand the principle behind this argument without much difficulty.

    What happens to the Bush Super PAC money and organization if Bush drops out? There are an awful lot of Bush supporters hoping that a cage match between Bush and Rubio doesn’t break out, because Rubio’s their fall-back option.

    If the billionaire taps @ 7 begin to open for Rubio, is three months enough to increase his ground game in swing states? What if the Bush machine steps in to help him?

    Remember how much money Dean had in 2003-04, until he didn’t? Poor spending discipline was one of the things that tanked Dean. Rubio started ’15 Q4 with $11M cash on hand. He’s not spent wildly yet, and with the post-debate publicity he’s received, he doesn’t need to.

    Bush or Rubio (or Fiorina) winning the nomination gives the GOP an opportunity to put a woman on the ticket. There are a few GOP women who would be strong candidates for that slot. Hillary’s already hemorrhaging white blue-collar voters. Put an appealing woman next to Rubio and Hillary may start to lose women (the ones she hasn’t already lost) as well. Put a staunch conservative woman on the ticket – Nicki Haley, say – and the conservative faction of the GOP may decide to show up and vote. Put a woman like Condi Rice on the ticket and you’ve covered the Hispanic, black, and female demographics, as well as doing for Rubio what Biden supposedly did for Obama in 2008.

    When Bush decides it’s over and does what his family expects of him, Rubio won’t have any ground-game worries.

    Oh. Rubio’s wife’s physical appearance isn’t going to hurt, either. Not creepy.

    Hospitality on-call is much worse than you think.
    In as many as a third of full service, white tablecloth properties servers, runners, and bussers are required to report in person to the business a few hours before the start of dinner seating and wait on-site without punching in until they are needed. Blatantly illegal, of course. But tipped workers in the fanciest houses accept it in order to have access to the affluent diners with big table checks and fat tips. Unfortunately, the practice filters down to lesser dining rooms and becomes abusive.

    @1 I actually think that’s OK in the primary phase, although it’s not what I prefer. Choosing a nominee is an intraparty affair, and the parties should be able to do that in whatever manner they like. If they want to stage lovefests with friendly moderators and easy questions, instead of real debates, that’s their privilege. (Whether that’s in their best interest or is a good strategy to attract viewers, though, is another matter.) For that matter, if they want to nominate their candidate by drawing straws or playing rock-paper-scissors, that’s their business.

    Of course, the general election debates between the parties’ nominees is a different matter. The news media, not the parties or campaign organizations, should design and control those debates, and the candidates should get tough questions — including questions calling out their lies, unrealistic promises, and personal flaws. Because now you’re no longer talking about a party choosing its candidate, but about the American people choosing their leader.
