The new second crossing of the Willamette River for Portland’s MAX Light Rail now has a name. Tillikum Crossing, Bridge of the people. It is a unique bridge, light rail and streetcars will be sharing it with buses and emergency vehicles, and unlike the Steel and Broadway bridges, no car traffic.

Said it was her choice, and she erred on the side of privacy. The Supreme Court basically dismissed his appeal on standing.

Puffy the Chart @ #4 shows a graph of all the job growth from 1981 to present. Obamas legacy, which isn’t over yet, not much different from other presidents. The biggest difference, Obama had to come out of the worst recession created by the worst president. And he is doing so with no help, but with resistance from Republicans. I think the guy is doing great with that respect!

What is a reasonable minimum wage in such a place? Assuming you work 40 hours a week, you’d have to make almost $29/hr. just to pay rent. That’s much, much higher than the minimum wage anywhere in the country, so obviously minimum wage workers can’t live there. If the rest of the neighborhood is equally expensive, they can’t work there, either.

I’ve never lived in New York. I’ve heard salaries are relatively high, but the cost of living is notoriously expensive. My guess is a young business or law school graduate who receives a $100,000 starting pay offer from a Manhattan firm is being low-balled. I get the impression that $250,000 a year is considered laughable on Wall Street — because 250k is barely subsistence there.

Now let’s take a fast jet to Seattle, where rents are lower, but you’re still looking at $1,200/mo. bare-bones minimum and around $1,800/mo. for what most folks would consider an average apartment. Or so young working people who rent have been telling me lately.

Again assuming a 40-hour work week (and that’s a BIG assumption nowadays, especially for low-wage workers), you’d have to earn $10.38/hr. just to pay rent. Of course, no one can “just” pay rent. We all have to pay taxes, and buy food, clothing, transportation, and medical care. Many young workers also have student loans to pay.

Let’s say Seattle adopts a $15/hr. minimum wage. That’s $2,600/mo., which leaves $1,100 for everything else if you can find a moderately priced apartment at $1,500/mo. Obviously, wage rates need to be higher in Seattle than in Yakima or Hoquiam, or employers won’t be able to fill lower-end jobs here because lower-wage workers won’t be able to live here.

The idea of a federal minimum wage that sets a floor on wages everywhere, coupled with state and/or city minimum wage rates that bump the floor higher where living costs are higher than average, makes eminent sense.

Seattle is a high-cost city, compared to average U.S. cities and the rest of Washington state, and should have a higher minimum wage than the federal and state rates. It’s simple math.

    I’ve posted this before:

In 2000, at the end of Clinton’s administration, the Consumer Confidence Index was at a record high 140. By January, 2009 this index had fallen to an historic low of 25.3. Comparatively, when Reagan took office at the end of the economically weak Carter years the Confidence Index was still at 74.4! Today this measure of how people feel about the country is still nowhere near 2000 levels, but it is almost 3 times better than 4 years ago…

Today the Congressional Budget Office is reporting a $200B decrease in the deficit almost entirely due to increased revenue from a growing economy and higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans. The deficit is now only 4% of the GDP, down from over 10% at the end of Bush’s administration – and projections are for it to be only 2% by 2015 (before Obama leaves office.) America’s “debt problem” seems largely solved, and almost all due to growth rather than austerity.

Q- To which President would you compare Obama’s economic performance?

BBBB- By all measures, President Obama has outperformed every modern President

Conservatives have painted themselves into a corner on the minimum wage issue. Confronted with simple math that shows existing minimum wage rates are less than bare subsistence, first they tried to argue that minimum wage workers are kids who live with their parents, or students who work part-time. When real-world demographic data refuted that, they shifted to arguing that government, not employers, should make up the difference. That sounds like BIG GOVERNMENT and WELFARE to me.

Basically, the conservative arguments against raising the minimum wage boil down to this: Someone other than employers should pay for employers’ labor costs. If not the families of low-wage workers, then taxpayers.

To which my answer is: Why?

Gotta link? Sounds like they’re falling back to a last resort:

to expanding the EITC.. Which is a government wage subsidy.

Or is it a government handout to business? Heh.

Conservatives tell us that raising the minimum wage will destroy jobs. Every time we show them another academic study refuting that argument, they attack the study, or its authors, or the publication, or make up excuses about why it doesn’t say what it plainly says.

Their next line of argument is that raising the minimum wage will harm the owners of countless small businesses. They’ll even trot out specific examples of small businesses that are failing, or have failed. The thing is, the minimum wage hasn’t been raised yet, it’s still $7.25 at the federal level and under $10.00 at the state and city levels; so whatever caused those businesses to fail, it wasn’t having higher labor costs imposed on them by government. The most conservatives can argue is that raising the minimum wage won’t save those failing businesses. I’ll concede that point to them, but I’d like to point out that keeping failing businesses on life support breathing for another week or month isn’t the purpose of raising the minimum wage.

We find that after conservatives have exhausted their inventory of arguments against raising the minimum wage, and all of them have been refuted, they’re still as entrenched as ever against raising the minimum wage.

    Why?

I’m not sure. I’m not a conservative, so I can’t speak for them, but I get a feeling they just don’t like the workers who create all of their wealth for them.

Most conservatives have a capitalist mindset, and therefore see the world as a zero-sum game, in which they get less if someone else gets a little more. (This has problems; but then, so does all the rest of their thinking on virtually every subject. We’re not dealing with rational people grounded in reality here.) Where that leads us is there’s no way to make conservatives happy. Basically, they want to take it all, and won’t be satisfied with any minimum wage higher than zero. They want labor provided to their little businesses for free — if not by workers, then by government. There’s a term for such people.

    Freeloaders.

Also, there was an announcement of $20 million for the Island Corridor Foundation to do track and bridge repairs on Vancouver Island, to allow the restoration of the Malahat, which was VIA’s only daily service west of the Quebec-Windsor Corridor. No word on where it will stop in Victoria, since the bridge needed for reaching the current station, is being replaced, with no rail provision on it.

Repeating someone else’s lies posted on some obscure rightwing tool’s shitty blog doesn’t change that at all.

The problem is, you cannot fathom the fact that one cannot successfully debate a liar who is speaking with the specific intention of conveying a false message. There is no way to counter an outright falsehood, told with the deliberate intent to deceive, with anything that would cause the liar to change their mind about anything.

You prove that in this forum practically every single day. Just repeating someone else’s lies, does not render them factual, and only illustrates to everyone how unintelligent and easily mislead, and so desperate to maintain that falsehood you and your TeaNazi pals are.

It’s not unusual for people enforcing judgments to ask for armed police to accompany them because, you know, some debtors go nuts. Ask professional repo guys about this, they have lots of stories to tell.

“How much, if anything does Bundy actually owe? DUMMOCRETINS claimed $1,000,000 but now it’s around $200K”

    Whatever the court order says.

“Why is Scary Land Deal Reid so heavily involved along with his son Rory? Something smells to Puddy… DUMMOCRETIN back door dealing…”

The Congressional Budget Office says passing a Democratic bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 would increase private-sector labor costs by one-third of one percent over the next five years.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/re.....esses-15b/

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Put another way, the cost to business of a nationwide $10.10/hr. minimum wage would pay for more than 100 high-end condos in Manhattan for Wall Street bankers and high-rollers. Or it could be used to increase the nation’s fleet of high-end private jets by 200 planes. Yes, there’s a lot more at stake here than just keeping millions of low-wage workers on food stamps for the rest of their lives.

Our country’s disrespect for workers is palpable. In modern-day America being too poor to live off other people’s labor is the mark of Cain. It brands you as morally and socially inferior and exposes you to abuse by job interviewers, hiring managers, supervisors, co-workers, and the genreal public. The only way to avoid this terrible fate is to not work. That’s what I do! I used to work, but I wised up, and I’m totally unproductive now. I joined the Capitalist Class, and now I get to sit on my fat rabbit ass all day, doing absolutely nothing! I can sleep in until noon or 3 pm if I want to. I really don’t care how much gas costs at the pump, because I only commute 10 feet a day, from my bunk to my computer chair, where I sit flipping stocks from 6:30 am to 1:00 pm, weekdays. Actually, I prefer to see gas go up, the higher the better, because my oil stocks go up when gas is over $4 at the pump. My drilling stocks and oilfield services stocks go up, too. Did you know that a single share of Chevron stock pays $4.00 of dividends a year? I own almost 40 different stocks, and I regularly get annual dividend raises of 6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, sometimes even 40%! When was the last time you got a 6% raise at work? See what I mean? Of course you’re not going to get a raise, because how can they give shareholders like me a raise, if they give workers a raise? So they take from workers and give to shareholders. Under a system like that, which is better, being a worker or a shareholder? Me, I’ll be a Capitalist every time! If there is reincarnation, and I don’t know whether there is, next time I come back here I’m gonna skip the being-a-worker part and be born as a Capitalist! That way, I can transition directly from Mother’s Milk to Corporate Milk, without any intermediate steps. I’ll spend my whole next life flying first class, eating in four-star restaurants, and living in penthouses. Being a fat, lazy, unproductive Capitalist is waaaay more rewarding than working and producing. My biggest regret in this life is that it took me so long to figure it out. I actually worked for over 40 years before I became a Capitalist. Can you believe that? What a fool I was. If only someone had told me sooner.

Just repeating someone else’s lies, does not render them factual, and only illustrates to everyone how unintelligent and easily mislead, and so desperate to maintain that falsehood

So when Puddy uses the crazed clueless cretin’s link Puddy is repeating someone else’s lies? Using the crazed clueless cretin’s link Puddy not factual?

Who knew this? So now we know all those links the crazed clueless cretin suck cuz OWS Racist Fraggy said so!

Sux to be the crazed clueless cretin!

@37 “So why does the Obummer whitey house not implement fair and equal pay?”

Hmmm. That’s a toughie. I’ll have to put on my thinking cap for this one. (Wheels turning) Aha! Because of Republican obstructionism in Congress? And the way to fix that, of course, is by electing a Democratic Congress.

Folks, I think we have a winner!

@39 No, let’s not change the subject, let’s focus on the fact you’re defending and supporting a guy who has ignored two federal court orders, is trespassing on federal land, is stealing from taxpayers, and encourages his supporters to threaten law enforcement officers with guns. That’s the kind of person Mr. Bundy is, and that’s what you’re shilling here.

And so far I haven’t seen Mr. Puddy give any credit to Mr. Kornze for backing off so this didn’t turn into another Waco or Ruby Ridge. After all, Mr. Bundy’s friends were using women and children as human shields, and there was only one side in that confrontation who were willing to sacrifice innocent lives to make their point. (The side that Puddy supports.)

    Shooting Of The Day (TM)

In Utah, a 2-year-old boy has been shot to death by his 3-year-old sister.

“‘The gun had been used earlier in the day by the victim’s father and was set down after returning home,’ said Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson, according to CBS affiliate KUTV in Salt Lake City.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Personally, I think people who keep loaded guns where toddlers can get ahold of them should be prosecuted for child abuse. But that’s just me. The NRA and all its gun-nut supporters don’t see a problem here.

Would a klownservative governor do this?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....78915.html

    Not likely!

While Brown has granted hundreds of pardons since entering office in 2011, his predecessors were far less inclined to do so. According to the Los Angeles Times, Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gray Davis and Pete Wilson granted a total of 29 pardons over a 20 year period.

Gray Davis didn’t have much opportunity to pardon low level drug offenders because of a million dollars from this crybaby.. and other jerks like him.

    Straight talk from Liz Warren:

“We can’t bury our heads in the sand and pretend that if ‘big government’ disappears, so will society’s toughest problems. That’s just magical thinking — and it’s also dangerous thinking,” Warren writes. “Our problems are getting bigger by the day and we need to develop some hardheaded, realistic responses. Instead of trying to starve the government or drown it in the bathtub, we need to tackle our problems head-on, and that will require better government.”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....75662.html

Of course our trolls can bury their heads in the sand.

They got pinheads – easiest thing in the world for them to put their pinheads in the sand. The pinheads go straight into the sand. No digging required.

Of course some pinheaded right wing jerks don’t get it:

Congressman Peter King, like other critics of Greenwald, reacted to the news less kindly, calling the win a “disgrace.”

Interesting article on a mom and pop short line railway in Virginia. The Buckingham Branch railroad was started by a former Baltimore and Ohio executive and his wife, a school teacher. It has grown from 17 to 250 miles, and hosts one Amtrak train, the Cardinal.

In the early 1990s, the commonwealth launched a rail preservation grant program; state transportation officials didn’t want any more short lines to be abandoned. The commonwealth approached Bryant about applying for a grant, but he declined.

“I was worried that if we took their help, they would try and tell us how to do things,” he says.

But a year later, Bryant decided revenue levels weren’t high enough to cover trackwork that needed to be done.

“I had this vision of grass and weeds growing up, ties decaying, and one of our locomotives rolling off the track and into the Slate River,” he says. “I figured we should rethink our program.”

So, the Buckingham Branch accepted a 70/30 matching grant of about $100,000 to replace ties. It was the first of several grants the short line would receive from the commonwealth to maintain its infrastructure, including a wayside signal system replacement, bridge work, and rail replacement.
