Drinking Liberally — Seattle

by Darryl — Tuesday, 7/29/25, 5:24 pm

DLBottleWith Election Day in Washington just a week away, right now is a good time to fill out that ballot and drop it off at a drop box near you. Then, swing by the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally for conversations over a drink.

We meet tonight and every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. You’ll find us out on the back patio. We start at 8:00pm.

Chapters of Living Liberally are all over the place…if you can’t make it to the Seattle chapter, stop by another chapter near you.

Looks like it’s official, UP is going to acquire Norfolk Southern.
They say Merger, but based on the history of UP Mergers, the new Railroad is still Union Pacific, and post-steam the colors are always Armour Yellow. Whether the Surface Transportation Board follows the 2001 rules on Transcontinental Mergers, should be up in the air at least. Although it appears not too much overlap.

Wait until Welfare Queen YLB’s two fucked kids end up homeless.

    ABSTRACT

Data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) indicate an unprecedented
43 percent increase in the number of people residing in homeless shelters in the United States
between 2022 and 2024, reversing the gradual decline over the preceding sixteen years. Threequarters of this rise was concentrated in four localities – New York City, Chicago, Massachusetts,
and Denver – where large inflows of new immigrants seeking asylum were housed in emergency
shelters. Using direct estimates from local government sources and indirect methods based on
demographic changes, we estimate that asylum seekers accounted for about 60 percent of the twoyear rise in sheltered homelessness during this period, challenging media and policy narratives that
primarily attribute this rise to local economic conditions and housing affordability.

This heresy from researchers at the University of Chicago and Dartmouth.

The federal government is charging a Cal State U channel Islands Professor with throwing a tear gas canister at law-enforcement. Again, it’s on tape. A combination of ICE, county, sheriff, and local police fired multiple canisters of tear gas at protesters. One of them lodged in the wheel of a disabled protester’s wheelchair . The professor dislodged it and threw it back in the general direction from which it came.

After passing tax cuts that will likely cost $5.5 trillion over the coming decade, the Trump administration is under increasing pressure to rein in soaring budget deficits. So what’s the plan? Tariffs, tariffs and more tariffs….

Current estimates by the Tax Foundation, which account for slower economic growth and foreign retaliation, suggest $1.6 trillion in net 10-year [tariff] revenue. If half of that revenue is then spent on industry bailout as well as higher unemployment and safety net costs, the remaining $800 billion in net savings would close less than 3 percent of the projected 10 -year budget deficits.

    Families who vote spews:

    Wednesday, 7/30/25 at 7:32 am

@23 unknowingly stumbles right into a concept.

    It’s expensive to be poor..

Let’s say your food budget for the week is $50. Sure, you COULD get a better price on five avocados and try to eat them all before they go off. But there goes 20% of your budget. In theory you COULD buy the family pack of ground beef for $6.99 LB but that’s a minimum 3 lbs so the $8.99* for a single pound is the realistic option within your means.

What essential do you NOT buy to get the deal of 24 toilet paper rolls for $17 instead of a four for $3.99?

And to a dumbfuck, observing that tariffs have added 20-30% on the consumer price of a thing is an indication that someone ‘can’t afford’ a thing rather than can afford but notices. Trickle down in action. When families’ food budget is $50 week more than a year ago, that’s $200 week they might not spend in some other part of the community on goods and services.

Good response there. 2024 BIDENFLATION! 2025 Suck it up, poors!

    * 1lb 80/20 ground beef retail up 11% since January national average. Your mileage may vary.

I hope everyone enjoyed the 2025 Q1 GDP “contraction”, which was caused by front-loading import costs to avoid the tariffs.

Sure, it gave you some short-term good feelz because you thought you were hurting Trump.

Problem is – and you were warned about this – GDP would spike in Q2 due to lower import expenses caused by the Q1 front-loading.

So today DJT47 gets to celebrate 3.0% GDP growth.

You should celebrate along with him, libbies. Don’t you want America to succeed?

@35 The stock market isn’t celebrating. What do traders know that you and Trump don’t? Yeah, tariffs skewed the numbers for both quarters. The average for 1st half 2025 is 1.75%, down from 2.3% in 4th quarter 2024 and 2.8% in 3rd quarter 2024. That sure as fuck looks like a slowing economy under Trump. I’m going back to bed.

The problem with liberal math @ 33

Let’s say your food budget for the week is $50.
    …
When families’ food budget is $50 week more than a year ago…

When to make a point about food costs today you are forced to claim that your food costs a year ago were zero, you really need to stop and think about your logic, libbie.

The only libbie who spends zero for food is Welfare Queen YLB, who panhandles for the dough instead. Welfare Queen YLB lives her life as a grifter. Her cost might be zero. But that isn’t the cost to the taxpayer who subsidizes her.
