Well, the North Carolina CD-11 race has tightened, but with 99% of the votes counted Cawthorn is more than 1,500 votes behind, so it looks like he’s done.

In Pennsylvania, with 74% of the vote in, Oz trails McCormick by about 7,800 votes, and Barnette is way behind. But Mastriano won the GOP nom for governor.

    16,
“Democrats stupidly spent money on ads promoting his candidacy…”

No sure things in politics. But considering the turnout numbers and the fact that long time Republican experts in Pennsylvania statewide races consider Mastriano “unelectable”, it might not have been stupid at all.

A toxic human ashtray on the GOP side of the November ballot can suppress turnout among the red-leaning white suburban soccer moms who voted for Trump and later regretted it. Trump barely won Pennsylvania in 2016, winning white women 50% to 47% over Clinton. In 2020 Biden won white women in PA by double digits.

“Suburban women, will you please like me?” Trump bellowed into a crowd in Johnstown, a small city east of Pittsburgh on Tuesday. “Please. I saved your damn neighborhood, okay?”

Voter file data now indicates that the swing in numbers came from two changes. First, as mentioned in the Politico piece nearly all of the D white women who voted for Trump in 2016 came back to the party in 2020, where they are expected to stay. But they only make a difference if they turn out. And we know a lot of them don’t show up in midterms. The other change in 2020 was R white women who stayed home, or undervoted, rather than cast another ballot for Trump.

So in a statewide November midterm in which the statehouse and an open U.S. Senate seat are at stake, turnout is a decisive factor. Mastriano comes from turnout central casting. He is 100% total abortion ban, STOP THE STEAL, JOO SPACE LASER crazy. He will be a huge embarrassment to the Pennsylvania GOP this summer. His name at the top of the ballot in November could help put John Fetterman in the U.S. Senate.

In the final days of Pennsylvania’s GOP gubernatorial primary, Trump said he was “obligated” to endorse Mastriano.

So here’s the big question: Now that Mastriano has easily won the Republican nomination, who else will feel similarly “obligated”? Good Republicans always have to support the Republican nominees. Big Elephant Mascot Thingy Says So.
    …
The flashbacks go like this: Voters give an absolutely abominable candidate the GOP nomination. People in high positions of Republican political power issue the requisite endorsements. These people all secretly hope the candidate will lose. Instead—holy guacamole—he wins.

To be fair, voters gave an absolutely abominable candidate the Democrat nomination that you, too.

“Holy guacamole, we knew she was an unlikable, corrupt cunt, but we didn’t know she smelled that bad.”

Eritrean Girmay became the first Black African to win a stage of one of cycling’s Grand Tours when he outsprinted Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel in the 10th stage of the Giro between Pescara and Jesi.
However, the 22-year-old had to abandon the race after a prosecco cork exploded into his left eye on the podium.
According to his Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team doctor Piet Daneels, Girmay suffered a hemorrhage in the anterior chamber of his eye and has been recommended to avoid physical activity.
“Our priority is a complete healing of the injury and that’s why we decided together with the rider and the sports director that Biniam will not appear at the start of the 11th stage,” said Daneels.

Humble kid given his impressive results in the race. He’ll be fun to watch, hopefully in the ’22 TdF and World Championships.

Democrat billionaire tries to buy a House race.

Despite $11 million in donations from a crypto billionaire, Carrick Flynn loses big in Oregon primary

Through his super PAC called Protect Our Future, Bankman-Fried spent money on TV ads, radio ads and direct mail services on Flynn’s behalf, making the Oregon-6 primary race the third most expensive House Democratic primary of this election cycle.

It’s a D+7 district and in a typical year it should be plenty for Democrats to retain the seat.

Of course, this is not a typical year.

During a Thursday luncheon last week with DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney, Frontline Democrats – the party’s most endangered lawmakers – were told that, in battleground districts, the generic Republican is beating the generic Democrat, 47-39, according to lawmakers, multiple party officials and the DCCC.

My one thought is that if this turns out to be a close race in the Fall, it would have been useful to have a Democrat billionaire bankrolling it. Who knows? Maybe he still will.

A bit more from the second link @ 26:

CLF polled 16 districts that Biden won by an average of eight points. They found that the president’s job approval rating is eight points underwater, and the generic ballot is tied.

In other words, Republicans contend that seats that Biden won by eight points are now “toss-up” districts. Districts polled include seats held by Reps. Abigail Spanberger (Va.), Kim Schrier (Wash.), Mike Levin (Calif.), Kurt Schrader (Ore.), Angie Craig (Minn.), Susie Lee (Nev.) and Jahana Hayes (Conn.).

Schrader was being beaten handily on Tuesday night by a progressive challenger, making the seat an even more attractive target for Republicans.

In addition, in these districts, 49% of voters say they want a Republican in Congress to provide a check on Biden, rather than a Democrat to help pass Biden and Pelosi’s agenda – those candidates garner 42%. The average incumbent Democrat was at 44% in these districts with a 38% favorable rating and 25% unfavorable rating.

Redistricting decisions by Democrats in states like NY and NV could end up fucking them in the ass this Fall.

Degen is afraid to look because he’s a Republican.

They’ve been afraid to look at least since their nominee proudly admitted that he’d bragged to a busload of complete strangers about his history of getting away with sexual assault.

A complete unwillingness to examine their own deplorable descent into white nationalism, bigotry, superstition, authoritarianism and paranoia is a defining characteristic of Republicans. They are beyond the Orange Event Horizon. Information is not available to them.

All Democrats, and especially independents have got to get it through their heads that “waiting for the pivot” is futile. You will wait for the rest of your life for a “better Republican“, and you will die waiting. The past is gone. We are borne forever forward into an unknown future. But the trajectory of Republicans was set decades ago when Newt Gingrich transformed the Speakership into a full time national political position, like some sort of helmet-haired Hype-Man distracting the audience so the pickpockets can do their work.

    There is no pivot.

For the rest of us who have escaped their fate, whatever speeds their fall is better. Mastriano is the future of the Republican Party here today. He will personally put a no-exceptions abortion ban bill on Governor Wolf’s desk to veto this summer. And in doing so he will put blood-covered coat hangers, xtian white nationalism, and Q on the Pennsylvania fall ballot. Sooner is better, I say.

    This is who Republicans are.

Of course, this is not a typical year.

One way it may be atypical is in polling.

Polls in midterms are historically not good in all cycles. Voter information and awareness is low. For a long time studies have indicated that when voter information and awareness is low their responses to survey questions lose their predictive value and become more uncertain.

Compounding this is that since 2016 polling among all voters, but certainly among registered or self-identifying “Republican” and “independent” voters has been getting worse and worse. Big survey firms keep testing different methods and weighting to improve. But so far nothing seems to help much.

Now consider that in GOPac funded surveys Madison Cawthorn was leading by 26% over his nearest rival in a very crowded party primary in March. One month later he was still well ahead by 17% points. So some things changed.

But if you follow polls enough you know that 17 points of movement in four weeks is suspicious. Cawthorn hurt himself. And the GOP leadership undoubtedly went after him and spent money to take him out. But if oppo and attack ad spending could produce seventeen points of response in the final four weeks of House campaigns, then that is all you would ever see in any campaign. Full stop. If embarrassing “hump” videos and attack ads could predictably produce that kind of voter response then it would be 24/7 non-stop humping.

So what’s going on? Survey respondents are lying. And they are lying in ways that are simultaneously biased, and discomforting to researchers. In this case a whole great big shit ton of Republican primary voters in NC 11 lied to pollsters about their support for Rep. Cawthorn. And we’ve seen similar indications in other races, particularly involving Republican candidates.
