Drinking Liberally — Seattle

by Darryl — Tuesday, 10/5/21, 5:03 pm

DLBottleTuesday means politics…and the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally will get together to chat, celebrate, and even complain. There’s room for you to stop by for a pint and some discussion, too.

The Seattle chapter of DL meets every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern (2409 10th Ave E, Seattle) starting at 8pm. We are still out on the patio (under an awning) in the back. The kitchen is still closed, but feel free to bring your own dinner. Note that a COVID vaccination card and ID are required to enter the Roanoke.

Chapters of Drinking Liberally can be found all over the place. If you can’t make the Seattle chapter, find a chapter near you.

@5 You’re surprised the FBI raided a NY cop union president’s home and office? Of course, they needed a search warrant, which requires probable cause; and as Doctor Dumbfuck will explain to you, the FBI couldn’t tell a corrupt union official from the Trump boys talking to a Russian lawyer with Putin ties, so they probably fucked this up, too. (The lawyer was actually Rudy Guiliani in drag.)

6)The Backlash, since the head of the SBA is a Trump friend. I believe he even condemned the teachers Union for marching over Eric Garner. Police Unions dictate too much in contract negotiations, especially over discipline issues. Was listening to the Minnesota AG in an interview, suggested they should be able to negotiate over wages, pensions, and benefits. That’s more than Walker gave the public employees other than cop unions.

IF ANYTHING, I WAS SHOWING AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THE POLICE UNIONS GET SPECIAL TREATMENT. THE INTERVIEW OI MENTIONED, WAS ABOUT THE POWER OF THE POLICE GUILD. I expect the Union to fight for their members, but not negotiable a disciplinary process that rigs the game.

I don’t mind ATU 587 doing their job and representing drivers in the disciplinary process after an accident. Just that they should not get the driver their job back after a fatal accident. I remember one case where they were complaining about a bad bus design that hampered driver visibility. It had split screen windshield, with the driver’s side having it sloped inward. Since Metro keeps buses in service long past the industry minimum of 12 years, perhaps the drivers and mechanics ought to have some input. I think they got the average age for a retired Metro bus down to 16-20 years. Better than what they inherited with Seattle Transit and Metropolitan Transit CO’s Motley fleet.

But who’ll need cops when we’re living in a Republican paradise where everyone is carrying and 17-year-old vigilantes are enforcing our laws, amirite?

    Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:

    Wednesday, 10/6/21 at 8:47 am

“I expect the Union to fight for their members, but not negotiable a disciplinary process that rigs the game.”

If they could, many unions would do so. If they could. But normally what pushes back against that is management who understandably worry that without a functional disciplinary/reward process they would be unable to meet management objectives.

That’s often a very powerful countervailing incentive. Managers are by definition accountable for outcomes, rather than activities. Their performance is judged based upon how well they achieve outcomes given a finite or limited set of resources. If a collective bargaining agreement deprives them of their ability to reward activities that promote management objectives and/or discipline activities that hinder management objectives they are rendered ineffective, and essentially useless.

Now apply this paradigm to police work and we begin to see some of the problems. The first problem is that police themselves are their own managers. They’ve established a “blue line” belief system in society that claims that the activities of police work are incomprehensible to lay persons, of even highly trained managers from outside the discipline. They regard any and all suggestions of direct “civilian” supervision as intolerable outrages.

Not only does this mean that police manage themselves, but it also means that police themselves get to define management objectives. If you ever read a major metropolitan police budget you’ll see that spelled out in the line items. Being exclusively in charge of their own management and empowered to define their own objectives, the normal tension that might exist between workforce and management is essentially wiped away. So there is really no need for an efficient disciplinary/reward system of procedures in modern policing – at least not one that serves public interests or objectives.

But also, sadly we ourselves bear considerable responsibility for this mess. Because we have popularized and inculcated an idea of police work that both glamorizes the work and valorizes those who perform the work. Police themselves of course buy into this mythology. But the public is mostly responsible for creating it. In reality police work is neither particularly dangerous nor particularly demanding technically. Police hiring authorities prefer candidates who are slightly less intelligent and demonstrate a willingness to adhere to rote procedure and act protectively toward the system.

And yet the public continues to promote frankly idiotic images of police as intellectually brilliant super-sleuths and self-sacrificing, courageous super-heroes. And the promotion of this cop mythology encourages our elected officials to acquiesce to the insane demands of police unions. And they really are insane. Objectively so.

Remember, these are not water plant workers or street lighting workers. We legally empower these people to shoot us in the face with large caliber handguns loaded with hollow point ammunition. We grant them the authority to make that decision. And yet, completely inexplicably, we include in their collective bargaining agreement a guarantee that they cannot be questioned about that decision for at least several days after having made it, and only after they have consulted with a lawyer that we provide. And we extend that same guarantee to every other police worker (witness) who might be involved and their direct supervisors. And then when they are questioned, we guarantee that they will only be questioned by their coworkers, and only with their taxpayer provided lawyers present.

We do all of this to ourselves. And all we have to do is stop.

More on the VA governor race:

The Emerson poll did not specifically ask about the Libertarian candidate, Princess Blanding. She was excluded from the debate last week, so her polling is apparently weak to very weak.

But here’s the thing. While Libertarians typically draw votes from the GOP candidate, Ms. Blanding is a black woman. It’s important to recall, as well, that McAuliffe defeated two other black women in the primary race this year.

The black vote may not be as firmly in the Democrat camp as is usually the case. Biden is clearly hurting McAuliffe, and Biden is down 20 points with black voters.

Four weeks until the election is a long time. McAuliffe will be sweating ever single day of that.

As you’ll all no doubt recall, Wingman pleaded guilty to kid-fucking back in May and was originally scheduled for formal sentencing in August. That was bumped into November to give more time for him to continue informing the Feds on all of his many criminal accomplices in all the kid-fucking, like Rep. Matt Gaetz, their weed doctor pal, and perhaps a smattering of other Florida Republicans.

Now Wingman and the DOJ have requested that court grant another delay, this time until March next year. It’s a lot of time. Which got me to wondering: what’s left? Wingman has been at this formally since May, and informally through his attorney since last year. He’s submitted to over 30 hours of interviews, turned over computers, phones, hard drives, accounts, and documents. He’s worn a wire. I would have assumed that whatever homie had to give up, it’s been given. So what would remain?

Testifying under oath in court, is what remains.

As part of his agreement DOJ agreed to drop 27 criminal charges against Wingman in exchange for his cooperation. As it stands, under the agreement he pleaded guilty to child sex trafficking (with a max sentence of life), illegally making fake IDs, aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, stalking, and conspiracy. The last charge is notable. It suggests that there is a fellow conspirator. Actually it requires it.

    I wonder who?

…the highest since at least October 2014. In some places, consumers are paying much more.

In California, the average price is more than a dollar higher at $4.42. In the state’s Mono County, prices have topped $5.

    Fuck California.

Higher oil prices translates to higher gas prices for consumers, and Americans are paying more than $1 per gallon more than this time last year.

Higher oil prices also mean oil sands extraction is cost-effective. That oil just won’t be coming into the US. #FJB.

I’m thinking about First Vegetable Joe Biden’s 38% approval and I can’t help but think it’s the same that Jimmy Carter had entering the Fall 1980 campaign.

Democrats abandoned Carter in the last year of his presidency. With Biden’s approval by his own party at only 80%, it seems as if Democrats are beginning to abandon him in the first year of his presidency.

    51,
I’ve only ever bet that Biden’s “approval” would always surpass the GOP nominee in any direct comparison.

Overwhelmingly, perhaps naively, most Americans expected that with a life saving vaccine freely and widely distributed to every American everywhere in April that we’d be done with this pandemic by now. But most Americans did not account for Q-curious VAX denial among “conservatives” enthralled to Trump nihilism.

Pandemic fatigue is very real and very significant. People are now sending their kids to school wearing gas masks and worrying daily about the next outbreak closure. “The Office” is still mostly on hiatus. And trailer state body piles have not yet peaked out. Live entertainment, events, hospitality, and travel are a confusing cluster-fuck of varying and competing requirements. And all of this is entirely due to suicidal commitment to superstitions on the part of BurQa Bob’s fellow “conservatives”. Everything is still a long way from “normal” and that’s leading most people to begin to wonder if “normal” will ever be possible again. That scares the shit out of them a whole lot more than inflation, or the Taliban.

On the other hand, in progressive states 1-dose vax rates are now finally climbing above 70% and 2-dose can be expected to follow soon after by the end of this month and before the major holiday season commences. If the science is right, and BurQa Bob and MTG are wrong, that means that statewide and in most counties in Real America restrictions and closures will come down next month. As for what happens in Idaho, or Alabama, or Tennessee I don’t know and I honestly don’t care at this point.

Real America will get back to something closer to normal in the next 30 days. The masks will come off and people can return to eating and celebrating indoors and enjoying shows again. With passage of some key legislation and a fairly normal Holiday season ahead it should be pretty nice. The fear and uncertainty will subside.

But at least BurQa Bob will always have this moment right here.
    Ain’t much. But it’s what he’s got.

    @ 52

… in progressive states 1-dose vax rates are now finally climbing above 70% and 2-dose can be expected to follow soon after by the end of this month and before the major holiday season commences.

Why the pause in those progressive states, QoS McHillbilly? After all, the average, including the Neanderthal states dragging it down, was 65% on June 18. That’s more than 3 1/2 months ago.

Biden’s July 4 Goal in Jeopardy as CDC Reports 65% of Adults at Least Partially Vaccinated

If one-dose rates were at 65% in mid-June, why are we not at 70% in “progressive” states yet, QoS McHillbilly? Did all the liberals take the summer off?

Or is it possible that the CDC was way, way off in its “calculation” in June, as it tried so hard to support First Vegetable Joe Biden’s 70%-by-July-4th goal?

It’s also interesting that despite all that wonderful advantage of the vaccination rates in progressive states, it’s the progressive states currently experiencing a rise in infection rates these days. Explainable, if you ask me, but still interesting.

Tomorrow I’m eligible for Pfizer # 3. Apparently immunity from #s 1 and 2 is declining quickly. Getting a little tired of cleaning each piece of gym equipment I touch before and after, but I’ll live.

This is the second hate crime hoax perpetrated by a black person in the Atlanta area in the very recent past.

Black Woman Masquerading As Ku Klux Klan Member Terrorized Neighbors, Faces Charges

The notes claimed to be written by a member of the Ku Klux Klan and threatened to burn down homes and kill people, police said. The notes described the author as “a six-feet-tall white male with a long, red beard who did not live in the neighborhood,” police added.

But the police department’s investigation led them to Lucas, a Black woman who lives in Brookmont.

The first notes arrived in the mailboxes of two residents on the street on December 21. “The notes threatened to burn their houses down and kill them and said that they didn’t belong in the neighborhood,” Detective Nathan Shumaker said.

Biden eliminated new opportunities on federal lands.

Hmmmm.. Why would he do something like that I wonder?

    Maybe because…

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2020/oct/26/revealed-trump-public-lands-oil-drilling

    and

    https://newrepublic.com/article/159290/trumps-fire-sale-public-lands-oil-gas-drillers

It was open season for carbon polluters and fossil fuel opportunists under the orange disaster.

And didn’t you just bleat that Obama allowed more drilling in the Gulf?

Enough “opportunities” had been made available already.

That tells people a lot about what he’s got in store for their efforts on private lands.

A fantasy… Something of a kind with the kreepee shit you spew here. But if any action Biden takes along those lines, imagined or not, and it concerns more massive release of greenhouse gases – it’s long overdue. Highly unlikely to be completely by edict.

Drumpf had a fucking wall “in store” for private lands in TexASS.. That was OK.. Was it not? Afaik, didn’t get far.

    Nice try.. yawwwn..

    53,
    Workplace mandates.
    Not complicated.

Shoulda been done in April. Biden should have nationalized the guard and deployed them onto freeway ramps with vaccine and ear tags.
You and your fellow VAX deniers would wind up just as dead/wounded only without the delay and expense.

This may explain why Biden is now much more active and open to exercise of Executive authority. If McConnell doesn’t back down/blink he’ll raise the debt on his own. He’s working the House and Senate first person singular. He’s campaigning in key states. And he’s not letting Manchinema hide behind him anymore. The six months of delay he’ll never get back and he probably realizes that now. I doubt he’ll make the same mistake again.
