@7 “Looks like the Seattle TSA went nutzo.”

This isn’t the first time SeaTac’s rightwing screeners have gone off the deep end, puddy.

First, there was the Seth Goldberg incident:

“It is not the place of government employees to criticize citizens for their thoughts. Yet that’s just what happened to New Jersey resident Seth Goldberg when his luggage was subjected to a security inspection
at SeaTac. Among items in his suitcase were a couple of ‘No Iraq War’ signs he had picked up in Seattle. After landing, he found inside his
luggage a handwritten note on a Notification of Baggage Inspection card that read, ‘Don’t appreciate your anti-American attitude.'”

The ACLU intervened and SeaTac’s TSA boss agreed to train staff on the free speech rights of American citizens.

    http://www.aclu-wa.org/library.....002-03.pdf

And then there’s the Noel Nightingale incident.

Ms. Nightingale flew from SeaTac to Wyoming with her mother’s ashes in urn. When she arrived at her destination, she found a TSA inspection notice — and an empty urn. There’s no telling where her mother is now, but the odds are pretty high that she ended up in:

    a) A wastebasket,
    b) A dumpster, or
    c) A commode.

    Top Democrat says he’s ‘dumbfounded’

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that she was briefed before the release of a controversial intelligence assessment and that she stands by the report, which lists returning veterans among terrorist risks to the U.S.

But the top House Democrat with oversight of the Department of Homeland Security said in a letter to Ms. Napolitano that he was “dumbfounded” that such a report would be issued.

“This report appears to raise significant issues involving the privacy and civil liberties of many Americans – including war veterans,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, in his letter sent Tuesday night.

Secondly, as far as the militia-type getting pulled over for a bumper sticker, since this story comes from wingnut websites there’s a good chance there’s more to it than they’re saying, for example, maybe he had homemade license plates on his car or there were screams coming from the trunk — who knows? In any case, the incident involved small-town Louisiana cops, and what can you say about small-town Louisiana cops? Federal Court Rules Washington Must Let Inmates Vote

A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit ruled today that a Washington state law that bars prison inmates from voting violates the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

The ruling is based on the fact a disproportionate number of inmates are minorities.

“The lawsuit contended that because nonwhites make up a large percentage of the prison population, a state law prohibiting inmates and parolees from voting is illegal because it dilutes the electoral clout of minorities,” KING 5 News reported. “The state contended that the lawsuit should be dismissed because the law was not intended to discriminate against minorities.”

    http://www.king5.com/news/loca.....35167.html

Roger Rabbit Commentary: My guess is this one won’t stand under full-court review, or if it does, SCOTUS will bust it. It isn’t necessary to prove a discriminatory intent to strike down a state law under the VRA; a discriminatory effect may be enough. But I think the connection between this law’s effects and the voting rights protected by the VRA may be too tenuous.

Red-Light Cameras Are About $$$ Not Safety

Jonathan Ramsey, AOL’s auto columnist, makes a strong case that municipalities using red-light cameras are motivated by income, not fewer intersection accidents.

Exhibit A: They shorten yellow-light times despite studies showing longer yellow-light times reduces both tickets and accidents.

Which is evidence that lights and cameras are set up to function like speed traps.

“[A]ccording to the NHTSA there were 34,017 fatal crashes in 2008, with 11,179 … attributed to speeding. … According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety … people running red lights result[ed] in almost 900 deaths.

“That’s 11,179 deaths vs. 900 deaths. … Yet the IIHS reports that as of December, 2009 only 52 communities use speed cameras. The number of communities that use red light cameras: 442. Almost nine times as many cities employ red light cameras … even though speeding appears to be far more deadly.

“The problematic issue with red light cameras [is] ‘trap’ … short yellow light times … make it more likely someone will enter the intersection … and therefore make it easier to issue ticket.

“In one case the length of a yellow light in El Paso was shortened by just a four-tenths of a second and citations jumped by 132%. In another case, a yellow light at a 45-mph intersection in Houston that lasted 3.6 seconds rang up 341% more tickets than the yellow lights at other, similar 45-mph intersections.

“Opponents of the red light cameras point to the fact that the duration of yellow lights in these scenarios is often less than the minimum durations proposed by national and state traffic engineering bodies. The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) has a formula for determining how long a yellow light should stay illuminated, but intersections boasting red light cameras rarely follow those informal guidelines.

“In 2003, a study by two researchers at the Texas Transportation Institute published a study that resulted in these findings: … A one-second increase in the yellow light time duration resulted in a 40-percent reduction in crashes and a 53% drop in violations.

” … [M]any red light cameras are not installed at the intersections with the highest accident rates. And … while cameras are said to capture up to 90% of their violations in the first second of a light going red, the large majority of accidents due to people running red lights happens five seconds after a light has turned red.”

The article goes on to discuss the huge amounts of money cities reap from red light cameras. Read the complete article here:

    Enemy Combatants or Criminal Defendants?

This article by David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Casey perfectly explains the libtardo mindset around “man made disasters”.

“Nor, in fact, is the line Mr. Kinsley proposes arbitrary; it is ideological. Adopting a war-abroad/law-enforcement-at-home rule is nothing but an exercise in political triangulation. It indulges the Left’s fundamental disdain for the use of military force, while permitting the Obama administration to claim that it actually is trying to protect the American people by taking the fight to the enemy. Read between the lines — or read the lines. Mr. Kinsley contrasts our roles “as a liberal democracy and as a legitimately aggrieved superpower.” Why is it, exactly, that those two things are inconsistent? We are, in fact, a legitimately aggrieved liberal democracy that happens, also, to be a superpower.”

“Treating an al-Qaeda operative who enters the United States to carry out an attack as a common criminal not only denies the nature of this challenge we face, but it works to level the playing field to our disadvantage.”

More PuddyCommentary… Leveling the playing field is always the modus operandi of Libtardos. When shown the rich pay more than their fair share of taxes, the virulent HA fools say they need to pay more to level the playing field. When shown how small businesses will suffer from the Pelosi and Reid health care bills libtardos claim it will level the playing field. Only when Puddy identifies the inner city inequities in schools and other services do libtardos magically forget this leveling the playing field argument.

Yep libtardo progressives are so fickle.

@63: Puddy is re-inventing history again.

On August 29, 2005, five hours after the hurricane hit land, Brown made his first request for Homeland Security rescue workers to be deployed to the disaster area only after two days of training.[33] He also told fire and rescue departments outside affected areas to refrain from providing trucks or emergency workers without a direct appeal from state or local governments in order to avoid coordination problems and the accusation of overstepping federal authority.

On September 1, 2005, Brown told Soledad O’Brien of CNN that he was unaware that New Orleans’ officials had housed thousands of evacuees, who quickly ran out of food and water, in the Convention Center — even though major news outlets had been reporting on the evacuees’ plight for at least a day. He also criticized those that were stuck in New Orleans as those “who chose not to evacuate, who chose not to leave the city” (disobeying a mandatory evacuation order).

On September 2, 2005, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley stated that he pledged firefighters, police officers, health department workers, and other resources on behalf of the city, but was only asked to send one tank truck.[34]

Controversy arose in November 2005 as a House committee investigating the response to Katrina released about 1,000 e-mail messages between Brown, staff and acquaintances. On the day Katrina struck, Brown wrote “Can I quit now? Can I go home?” He later quipped to a friend on September 2 that he could not meet her because he was “trapped [as FEMA head] … please rescue me.” In another e-mail, Brown’s press secretary, Sharon Worthy, advised him to roll up his sleeves “to look more hard-working… Even the president rolled his sleeves to just below the elbow.”[35] An e-mail offering critical medical equipment went unanswered for four days.[35]

On Thanksgiving week in 2005, Brown was No. 1 on CNN’s “Political Turkey of the Year” list for his handling of Katrina.

On August 28, 2007, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed what he called “Brownie’s Law” requiring that “qualified people, not political hacks”, lead key federal agencies

    1) How could FEMA be right with 4 devastating Florida hurricanes with nobody howling for FEMA’s head dude and in New Orleans FEMA couldn’t anything right so Goldy calls for Mike Brown’s head?
    2) Red Cross delivery commentary
    3) Bush declared state of emergency 2 days before Katrina hit
    4) Nagin doesn’t evacuate when Bush and Nat’l Weather Service asks him to 2 days before.
    5) $30 Million+ squandered by LA not using it on Levee maintenance.
    6) Kathleen Blanco comments rejecting Red Cross
    FEMA deliveries to N’Awlins
    7) AMTrak provides train to remove N’Awlins peeps. Nagin rejects it.
    8) 400+ School buses sit flooded. Nagin chose not to use them to evacuate due to an insurance liability excuse.
    9) Lt Gen Russel Honore tell reporter he’s stuck on stupid. Puddy associates this comment to many HA Libtardo commenters
10)Judge issues judgment the Army Corps failed on the Levees.
    11) Puddy placed University of California – Berkeley Levee report
    12) How come Jed Bush reacts to 4 devastating hurricanes one way and Kathleen Blanco reacts another way? 1 works to make old new the other blames the world. One is conservative and one is a progressive libtardo.
    13) The levee that broke was new and met all standards per the US military. Butt libtardos hate the military

In addition to the Katrina discussion (and in contrast with Puddy’s faulty memory of his own):

    1. Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster. The consequences of the disaster are a result of policy choices from within the Bush administration, with the assistance of the then-Republican Congress.

    2. The seeds of disaster were sown through early decisions by the Bush administration to effectively dismantle FEMA. Bush considered the FEMA as organized during the Clinton administration to be a glorified welfare program, and one of his early goals was to dismantle it. His vision, and those of his administration, was for FEMA to be little more than a small coordinating-agency which had no professional staff of emergency workers. It’s primary purpose would be to disburse contracts to private companies to provide emergency services, and to place most disaster relief duties upon state and local agencies (yet another un-financed federal mandate).

    2. As a consequence of # 2, above, there was a huge out-flux of trained emergency responders from FEMA. The agency was unable to provide emergency services at anywhere near the scale needed.

    3. The privatization and out-sourcing plan didn’t work. Resources were not pre-positioned, tested, or even contracted for in even modest amounts. The talent drain had left an agency which didn’t anticipate the need for ice, and was left days later trying to buy truckloads of ice from around the country with bad delivery instructions, resulting in some trucks criss-crossing the country for several days until the ice was no longer needed (or melted). Previous disaster plans had been thrown in the trash cans by arrogant political appointees with dismissive comments such as “Americans won’t live in tents”, etc.

    4. The flooding of New Orleans was entirely predictable, by anyone with a smidgeon of common sense and reasonable news knowledge. Anytime a hurricane comes within 500 miles of New Orleans, news articles had regularly reminded the readers that New Orleans had a significant flood risk. The Bush administration’s protestations that “nobody could have predicted” the scale of the disaster was laughable in New Orleans, where jus the year before the Times-Picayune had ran a series which turned out to predict the flooding, and it’s impact, quite accurately.

    5. What happened in the weeks and months after Katrinia was an example of the most cynical and malicious of political game-playing of a Machiavelli character. The decision was made from within the Bush administration that although public efforts would be made to look like the re-building of Katrina was a national priority, every effort would be made to de-populate the city, and to spread it’s minority inhabitants (who tended to vote Democratic) among reliably red-state relocation sites, thereby disbursing their political impact to insignificance. This was done by making very public large-scale appropriations of rebuilding money, but placing a strangle-hold on the approval of any disbursements of money. This was surprisingly easy, as no money would be approved to allow tenants to move back within the city, only to property owners for their losses. The government wouldn’t loan money to the N.O. utilities to restore services, so no one could move back into areas with no electrical, gas, or sewer services, and then the goverment wouldn’t approve disbursement of loans to those areas without residents or public services available. It’s the typical type of catch-22 an adminsitration which wants to solve problems can find ways to resolve, but an administration which is satisified with the status quo is happy to allow to prevail. The end result was that only the wealthier sections of New Orleans were rebuilt, the hardest-hit sections, including the lower 9th ward, remain mostly vacant. The political consequences are that Lousianna is now a reliably Republican state in national elections.

    6. Early promises to New Orleans businesses that they would receive the lion’s share of rebuilding contracts were outright lies. Even as those lies were being uttered, the Bush administration was signing no-bid contracts to politically-connected firms to manage the entire re-building effort. Haliburton subsidiaries received the greatist majority of those contracts. They, in turn, sub-contracted with other firms, mostly Texas companies (many employing laborers who’s right to work in the U.S. was suspect). By the time the government held a meeting in New Orleans with businesses who wanted to participate in the re-building effort (about three weeks after the hurricane), they were told that the contracts had already been issued. There has never been any regular audit of those contracts because the contracts were written for lump sums, without any right for the government to audit the firms being included in the contracts. But it appears that the Haliburton subidiaries were making about $350 per hour for labor in removing debris from New Orlean’s streets, and they laborers themselves were receiving minimum wage. The only contracts which went out to New Orleans businesses were ones issued by the City of New Orleans or the Parish itself.

So, I could give a rat’s ass about your idiotic poll. Americans are kind of stupid at the moment, and how they vote in polls that don’t matter doesn’t much matter. My clients love me. Some of them have named their children after me, and have told me so in Christmas cards. Has that happened to you Dave? Or to you, Karen? Spare me your nonsense.

I really don’t care. Tea for the Tillerman is the only album he ever did that was worth a lick.

re 143: Did you charge them for reading the Christmas cards they sent?

I hear you guys live and die by billable hours. You could always hide the charge for reading the card in another billable activity — or split it up between several.

Now that’s an interesting point. I had no idea.

I’d love to know how that works. If you have a pointer that I can read on my own time, that’d be great.

I’m not asking you to explain here and now, of course. This thread’s toast.

@143 So, I could give a rat’s ass about your idiotic poll.

Roger Rabbit was asked for the data/study that supported his claim:

“it should be obvious to even a peawit like you that clients keep coming back because they think the lawyer is worth what they pay him”

If this is true than there must be surveys to support it. Let’s see some concrete evidence instead of opinion from a (former) member of the bar. Your clients’ view of you is totally irrelevant to this far larger question, you dope. Do you get that?

Regarding your inane/arrogant view above, that is a poll of the public from a highly reputable pollster. It is in fact, a perception that has persisted for years despite your claim that the public is currently dumbed down and, presumably, their opinion doesn’t matter. In fact, it is a perception that has persisted for years, despite rigid bar ethics. That says that people’s dislike or distrust of the legal profession goes beyond bar codes.

Incidentally, your claim regarding your clients comes from you. Maybe there’s more to karen and your legal fees than you’re letting on. Let’s see what Avvo says . . . show us your profile.

And RR, back to you, let’s see some real data.

123 – Moron – never even implied that was the case.

Again you deflect from your loneliness and misery.. You need others to share in your love of right wing bullshit. You need a partner to promulgate this bankrupt ideology and share your bottomless hatred of anything that calls it for what it is.
