Drinking Liberally — Seattle

by Darryl — Tuesday, 5/12/15, 6:24 am

DLBottle

What’s there to talk about in politics? Shell Oil got the go-ahead from the feds to drill in the Arctic, but will the Port of Seattle give them a base? Another week, another batch of G.O.P. Presidential candidate announcements to ponder. And Jeb Bush would still invade Iraq…even “knowing what we know now.” Please join us for drinks and conversation at this week’s meeting of the Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally.

We meet tonight and every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. Our starting time is 8:00 pm, but some folks stop by earlier for dinner.

Can’t make it to Seattle on Tuesday night? Check out one of the other DL meetings this week. The Tri-Cities and Redmond chapters also meet tonight. On Wednesday the Bellingham chapter meets. The Bremerton, Spokane, and Kent chapters meet on Thursday. And next Monday, the Aberdeen and Yakima chapters meet.

There are 191 chapters of Living Liberally, including eighteen in Washington state, four in Oregon and two in Idaho. Chances are excellent there’s a chapter meeting somewhere near you.

Soooooooooooooo four of the six invited Arab nations are expected to skip Obummer’s latest attempt at appeasement! Can you say foreign policy gone awry? http://www.foxnews.com/politic.....mit-in-us/ The sadministration mouthpieces really sat down to discuss spin cycle mode!

Over at PMSNBC Andrea Mitchell said

“With the decision not to go against Assad in Syria over chemical weapons once that red line that the president himself had imposed on Labor Day a couple of years ago. And to let that war go unanswered really by any kind of American initiative since then. So I think that was the first step. And then Iran. here you have Iran a very aggressively in Yemen against the Saudis. Saudis engaged in a shooting war there. And they believe — that with the lifting of the sanctions, Iran will have so much more disposable income for their foreign policy misadventures.
    ,,,
What I think is so extraordinary here, is that they confirmed to John Kerry that he was coming. And then the foreign minister whom we all know from his years and years here as ambassador and before that as national security adviser to former King Abdullah, he was with John Kerry in in Paris on Friday, saying that the king was coming. So this snub is so in your face to not only not come, to say you’re coming and then not come, but to have reconfirmed at the highest levels. It’s embarrassing to Kerry and the White House. And I don’t see any way that they can spin it.”

    Working Washington @workingwa
Tom Douglas likes to say higher wages could mean closing restaurants. But he keeps opening new ones. Next up: July 1. http://seattle.eater.com/2015/.....pen-july-1 …
    Retweeted by Goldy

Well, yes, yes he does. And so do others at the higher end.

If one takes a link-clicking trip from HA to civicskunkworks to some dude named Invictus and then to a guy named Evan Soltas, one finds this piece:

    http://esoltas.blogspot.com/20.....attle.html

Soltas, who apparently has been following Ezra Klein around for awhile, breaks down the Seattle food service businesses into categories. Most of them are doing well enough, or at least their numbers are increasing. However, when looking at the fast-food (limited service) category, one finds that the number of licenses has decreased quite a bit over the past year.

In March, 2014, there were 2031 licenses in this category.

As of April 21st of this year that number is down to 1911, or more than 5%.

And that is essentially BEFORE the new minimum wage law took effect.

So the fast-food restaurants, like the one Goldy likes to mock, are already in decline.

The lower-paid workers, who can’t afford Tom Douglas’ latest interpretation of Seattle cuisine, have fewer options of the places they CAN afford.

The fast-food workers are seeing their potential places of employment shrink. And when rushing to or from their place of employment, if they need to feed their kids some relatively inexpensive restaurant food they are less and less likely to be able to do that within the Seattle city limits.

For those fast-food places that are left, their production costs are going up, quite a bit.

It’s really popular around here to talk about the upside of wage increases. New restaurants at the upper end are exciting and fun – if you work at Amazon and can afford them.

But what about the effects on the restaurants that, say, make banh mi, which Goldy just assumes will have no trouble increasing their sandwich price by 50 cents so as to cover their wage cost increases?

    They’re in decline, Goldy.

Perhaps as you begin your next 11 years of blogging you can talk about that a bit more.

    Post hoc ergo propter hoc

You ignored a few columns in suggesting that the minimum wage hike is the issue.

Mobile food sources 334 then, 415 now.
Non-Alcoholic Snack or Beverage (think Jamba Juice or Coffee House) 219 then 246 now.

These are direct competition to “limited service” restaurants. Let’s do a quick bit of math…

86+25=131, 2013-1917=106 closed limited service places with no data on how many were mom-and-pop operating Teriyaki joints or other employer O&O no employees family businesses and you get…hang on…

25 more businesses in the city from the start of the data set in the quick/no service food sector than before.

But yeah, post hoc ergo propter hoc, the minimum wage increase that hasn’t even taken effect yet for likely 90% of those closed businesses is THE CAUSE of their closure as The Brilliant Sloppy has demonstrated, Q.E.D. to keep up with the Latin.

Funny thing about “free market” capitalists blog commenters is they don’t understand the free market in any way. Econ 101 uses terms like “all things being equal”… and that’s as far as they got and add a copy of Atlas Shrugged and they think they’re a Wharton MBA.

@10 It increasingly appears the housing market, not wages, will drive fast food and other minimum-wage businesses out of the Seattle area. Everywhere you go, people talking are about Seattle’s housing crisis. That crisis is already here, and it’s now clear $15 an hour isn’t going to be enough to live in this city. Seattle is rapidly transforming into a suburb of San Francisco, it’s being called “Silicon Valley North,” where six-figure incomes will be the norm and high-paid tech workers will displace everyone else. Heck, even top-of-scale public school teachers make $90,000 a year here, according to the Seattle Times, and the median home price in King County will soon surpass half a million dollars. How will $15-an-hour workers live here? Answer: They won’t, and low-paying businesses won’t be able to hire workers. Either pay $70,000 a year, or do without workers, that’s what a free market looks like.

    @ 10

    Interesting response.

I didn’t suggest the minimum wage hike is the issue. It has barely taken effect, as I inferred.

What I did point out is that there is a subset of the restaurant industry in Seattle that is under pressure, insofar as the number of licenses is concerned, already.

I ‘ignored’ the other categories because they don’t seem to be under pressure as measured by the number of licenses.

If I suggested anything, it is that restaurants already under pressure, for whatever reason, won’t be helped by the new increase in their labor costs.

Your response was apparently to broaden the fast-food category by equating it with food trucks and Jamba Juice outlets as if to suggest that they
    • provide similar food products as fast-food restaurants
    • employ a similar number of people as fast-food restaurants
and then add up the categories to make the decline in fast-food restaurants go away.

    Which doesn’t do so.

If a fast-food restaurant employing 15-20 is bulldozed and in the same month a newly built multistory four blocks away installs a Starbucks, do lower-wage workers still have a place to take their kids for a meal? Because the number of licenses doesn’t change in this example.

If Goldy’s fave Ethiopian restaurant were to go tits up and a Jiggles espresso stand pops up (see what I did with the mammaries there?) on a vacant lot down the street from it, does Goldy’s daughter benefit in any way from that the way she used to benefit from dinner out with Dad? What about the Ethiopian family who lives in the back of the restaurant? The number of licenses doesn’t change, after all, so in your example there’s no difference.

All I am doing is pointing out a potential downside to the minimum wage increase. Businesses already under pressure rather suddenly (a year or so notice) have more, and if they are a franchisee that pressure is going to ramp up much faster, going forward, than if they are not.

The irony here is that unions and leftists cheering the minimum wage increase because they think it will help fast-food workers may, in fact, see that it helps the ones who remain, while increasing the number who need to find a new job. The inequality they purport to address by increasing wages will likely contribute to fewer lower-priced restaurants and more, relatively speaking, upper-end establishments.

In other words, an increase in social inequality as the poorer have fewer in-city choices for meals, fewer jobs for the unskilled, and the richer have a greater number of craft cocktail bars from which to choose.

There’s a downside. If Nguyen’s pho establishment is replaced by a Tom Douglas gourmet food truck, that’s not a wash, CZ. Someone comes out a loser.

Why do you assume it’s socially desirable to “help” a few marginal restaurants stay in business by keeping the incomes of thousands of minimum-wage workers below basic subsistence?

That’s been debated multiple times and minds aren’t going to be changed.

Some will lose their jobs. Others will be pulled out of poverty.

Here’s the thing – a decade from inception of an increase, CBO can’t figure out whether an increase in minimum wage to $10.10 will be a net positive, or a net negative, for the national economy.

So whether society, overall, does or does not benefit is far from clear.

There’s a downside to what has been done in Seattle and there certainly is a downside to a $12 national minimum wage.

I look forward to Senator Patty Murray’s call for CBO scoring of the effects of a $12/hr federal minimum wage.

I’m pointing out the downside, RR. So people like Better don’t think it’s all just a corporate lie.

Yep, “All things being equal” is rarely equal.

As an example, a mom & pop Ethiopian restaurant (or Teriyaki place) where one is in the kitchen and one is front of house of which there are hundreds around King County that operate thus employs how many people?

A drive through espresso stand that is open seven days a week from 5am to 6pm will require at absolute minimum three employees given that it would be illegal to make your employees work seven days a week 56 weeks a year. One of those employees may or may not be the owner.

So just from you example you would lose two jobs (mom and pop) but gain three (owner plus two hires). And you did so using an example of a place that will not be effected by a wage increase. The family owner/operators of a restaurant with them as sole employees does not pay an hourly wage to anyone.

The rest is you just trying to sound smart.

But in a classic moving the goalposts you went from number of jobs to quality of life. Some people would want that Jiggles near their house or job and go there more than they would go to an Ethiopian restaurant. Who am I to judge?

This is especially true of Fox News, because they tell the truth about Obummer policies where the libtard left wrong DUMMOCRETIN loving msm is forced to cover the story, begrudgingly.

    2) He’s created more poor people than other president in history. Almost 13 million of them left the workforce since Obummer has been preznit and the recession ended! Values are from bls.gov! PuddyLinks previously PuddySupplied. Obummer really loves the poor so much Obummer implements policies to create more of them each month.

    3) Obummer uses the poor as political paeans! Plain and simple.

    4) Obummer really loves the poor so much Obummer does everything in Obummer’s sadministration to keep them poor. Obummer did nuthin for the poor for how many years again HA DUMMOCRETINS? Obummer’s whole sadministration duration! And Mrs Obummer will tell you how you need government to stay poor!

    5) Obummer only wants peeps to worship at the feet of Obummer. That’s why they called him “the messiah” back in 2008. Oh please don’t make me display the multiple links of this commentary again. Remember the last two attacks from the senile schismatic IDIOT Wabbit and the teabaggin buttbusting BULLSHITTIUM buttbigot gorilla? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Too bad the Saudis are miffed at us. Times like these call for context. Sure, getting snubbed by a few foreign leaders attempting to establish their political bona fides by “going their own way” is a bummer. And maybe it might have been avoided. But I’m not sure how. What’s going on in Yemen is damn close to genocide. I’m not sure how well Americans would stomach cheering that on while ratifying the House of Saud’s view of their role among Arab states.

But really? How does that compare with destabilizing an entire region, starting two civil wars, and fomenting global political and religious insurrection just because you wanted to look commanding and gain your father’s respect? I’m not sure where these sorts of things sit on history’s scale of foreign policy boo boos. But I’m inclined to think not very close together. I’ll take the community organizer behind door number one, and skip Jay Stewart dressed up like a fighter pilot sitting on a donkey behind the curtain. Thanks.

    @6,
    pump the brakes a bit.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to infer that the decline of licensees at the lower price range reflects the impact of rapid escalation of rents? I know a few people in the business (including Tom Douglas), and long before this issue emerged, what had them all worried was rising rents. Like all good business owners they bitch about everything they have to pay for. But chapter and verse on the sudden disappointing closure of every favorite joint has always been the lease renewal. This is why Portland has a more dynamic bar scene right now. It’s like Seattle in the 90s. The rents are still affordable… ish.

There are more than a million ways to lose everything in that business. From skeevy investors screwing you over, to coke nosed over-serving bar tenders who bleed you a shot at a time. But the leading contender has always been the greedy landlord with a lease up for renewal. Successful, higher end properties seldom have this problem. Their cash flow and status make them very desirable tenants. Not so much for the mom-and-pop teriyaki stores. In a market like Seattle’s, they get driven out to strip malls in the burbs. And they get replaced by places that pay more in rent and in wages.

    @22,
practically nobody lives in the back of their restaurant in Seattle. It might be possible under health codes to have an attached separate dwelling, with its own separate entrance, etc. But the cost of the improvement to accommodate that, combined with the loss of revenue from the reduction in rent generating business activity makes it wildly unfeasible. In short, its much cheaper to live elsewhere.

So your hypothetical tells us very little about how small restaurant owners operate. But maybe just more than a little about how you imagine Ethiopian small restaurant owners live.
Well, here’s the truth: they live pretty much just like you and me. Amazing.

Practically no one does, I’ll agree. It isn’t common, but it isn’t a hypothetical, either. An Indian place I’m familiar with

The dining room’s sparsely ornamented with a mirror and a coat stand, although a back room that a fancier restaurant might make its storage closet is crammed with cots, games, and a huge plastic tub of salty snacks. In addition to being a takeout hub, Mehak is a home.

    http://www.seattleweekly.com/2.....e-sputter/

is one of them. Some people have it rough, for whatever reason.

Higher rents, fewer locales due to demolitions and rebuilds, higher food costs – all of that factors in.

For those restaurants that can afford to hire staff, it’s now tougher.

A citizen thinks primarily about his or her community and is preoccupied with the safety of the neighborhood, the health of the elderly and disabled, the well-being of the young. A taxpayer thinks mostly about himself or herself, about who or what is taxing — that is to say “taking” — his hard-earned money to give to some undeserving body or some other distant, wasteful thing.”

Ahhh yes another DUMMOCRETIN led city having junk bonds… http://www.chicagotribune.com/.....story.html

Warnings of the last decade are coming true: You can blame the collapse of this city’s, and this state’s, credit ratings on the Chicago and Illinois pols who traded sweetheart pension deals to public employee union officials in return for campaign money and muscle. All three major credit rating agencies have spotted the wreckage and downgraded many of the governments here. Now Moody’s, which has raised louder alarms about public indebtedness than have the other two, essentially is saying that, whatever happens, it won’t be accused of sugar-coating the pension debacle in Illinois.

As a result, living here will become more expensive. The small but allegedly rising risk of lending money to Chicago and other Illinois governments will thrill vulture investors; they accept the possibility that they won’t walk away with 100 cents on the dollar in return for demanding higher interest payments from taxpayers. So the vultures will flock to future Chicago bond offerings. The majority of more cautious institutional investors, though, will at least ask themselves: In a nation full of more stable, better-rated state and local governments, do I want the headache of wondering what happens next in Illinois?

Used toilet paper will be worth more than Chicago bonds now! Now which party kisses the ASS of unions and their union thugs? Now maybe Boeing corporate will move back to WA State? Yeah right!

How long might it take before the Chicago situation goes into complete crisis mode? How long might it take before Rahmbo Dead Fish Emanuel calls for a Obummer bailout? How long might it take before Obummer tries an executive action because the Obummer library will be located in South Chicago?

This Republican doesn’t believe in Obamacare. Or paying for health insurance. Now he has a firsthand opportunity to learn how well (or not) the Republican system of relying on charity works.

“I sometimes think about fucking the shit out of Rick Santorum…I’m up for whipping up some Santorum in Santorum.”

Even though Dan’s remarks are odious, he has every right to say them.

Even though Pam Geller’s remarks are odious, she has no right to say them per DUMMOCRETINS!

    Wait for it…

To his credit, Scarborough did ask Rendell about the stimulus bill. Didn’t we drop a bundle on infrastructure in that? Rendell’s response was classic: “Not enough.” Of course it wasn’t enough. It never is. Remember: Second only to Obama himself, Rendell was the guy who led the fight for the stimulus at the time. He crisscrossed the country talking about “shovel ready jobs” and all the glorious things the stimulus would do. Later, when it turned out he — and the president — were either ignorant or lying about the existence of shovel-ready jobs, Rendell told the New York Times, “When we said ‘shovel ready’ we meant ‘shovel ready’ in the way we do things.” He hilariously added, “I don’t think we meant to be deceptive.”

    That bundle was $1 Trillion!

The train was going approximately 107 MPH!

@118 and you are just a nut, if you can’t distinguish between her actions and the action of Dan savage, as being at different levels for lack of a better word. Ones, Dan’s, pretty much harmless, and hers that left two people killed with the potential for it to be worse than it was.

Who is dangerous? Look in a fucking mirror.
